Thank you so much. Funny any time and interesting seeing Ian a little more vital. He is still great but 30 years ago I was more vital! This for a Canadian is also history and increases my understanding of England which I always like to read about, visit, and see TV programs from

My only previous experience of Rory McGrath was on QI, so it's nice to see him here not being an insufferable bore.

Hi there hero, just watched three back to back, was curious I hadn't seen them (you are so good!) so I checked community and your post explained it all. Fantastic, very well done. I laughed out loud tonight, haven't done all week . . . p s did Jimmy Mulville leave at roughly the same time as Angus? His name disappears from the credits at some stage and Jo Bunting's name seems to then appear when the guest hosts came in, I worked at a radio station with Jo (and Chris Morris knew you'd like to know!). I appreciate Angus even more now. And you and all your painstaking work, thanks again, best wishes, Frances

Hi.That's a very interesting question. From what I can see is that he left the show for a while and then came back again in 1998 and left completely in 2002 .Jo started working as the producer of this show in 2005 so you're right on this one!

@@abitmoredeayton Thanks! Well, well, well, both around the same time, bet he rated Angus. Though being the genius in charge, he maybe had the power to keep him but didn't . . . Ah well, I'll never know so will leave it now. Just watched Bill Deedes and Will Self, lots of laughs!

@@francessquid7457 There was a rumour that Jimmy fell out with Angus for some reason (I think it was something to do with not wanting to be friend with the alcoholics and druggies.See also: Jimmy Mullvile and Rory Mcgrath) and the scandal was the perfect way to eliminate him.

Criticism of Carla Lane's sitcom output from the man behind Chelmsford 123? Surely not.

Deeply flawed as it was, it's still a lot funnier than most of Carla Lane's output.

@@anonUK much of Carla Lane's output is lost to history, so I can't really judge. I don't remember Butterflies being particularly funny, and I can't remember enough about Bread, but I definitely thought the Liver Birds was better than Chelmsford 123. This is all a matter of opinion, of course. I think it's fair to say that none of these sitcoms was particularly special.

A very good episode with guests who can pull their weight. These old episodes are much funnier than the later ones. Its interesting that at this point neither Merton nor Hislop are constantly attacking Deayton (just Ian screaming at Bremner's joke about Deayton's career). Also Merton is not visibly bored and irritated by the programme. I think the series went downhill because of Merton's constant harrassment of Deayton which was mostly very boring to watch, and Merton's evident boredom and disinterest in the show, which is also very boring to watch. It was Merton who should have been replaced, not Deayton. Can the producers seriously not find a single comedian who can replace Paul Merton?

Merton's bad humor and hostility are very evident in some episodes. I'm always amazed at how AD managed to carry on and keep the conversation flowing. Proof of his talent.

Steve Fry certainly used a lot of cocaine and he freely admits it but it is a little irritating when Ian makes a big deal of it. 99% of the time I find Ian well-informed and articulate and funny, but it's a little much when he makes this point about Stephen when that man has done so much fine work in writing, reading, acting (Jeeves, etc.) and humour and presenting on panel shows. Odd
