18:56 That turbo sounds like a jet engine during taxiing.
My dad used to take me to work with him in the summertime. I learned how start and run these old cable rigs at an early age. Everything was cable back in the 50’s and early 60’s. I started working on the pipelines in 1964. It was in the early 70’s before getting into Local #12 in Southern California. In the 70’s I spent hours and hours pioneering and building right a ways and doing back filling and dress up work on an old Cat D-7 46-A and a cat D-8 15-A. It was amazing when the company that I worked for started buying hydraulic equipment. It was so nice to pull or push a lever to change blade angles and positions. No more jumping off and muscleling those heavy awkward blades around.😂😅🤣 I loved kicking those pony motors in gear and watching those huge smoke rings shoot up into the air and listening to the awesome sound of those mains taking off on a cold morning in northern Utah. Those were good days. I worked in that field for 50 years before hanging it up. Thank you for making these wonderful videos bringing back those wonderful memories.

Quick story about D8H's, in 1967 Vietnam we were using these machines to help lay down Marston Mat (commonly known as PSP planking to build temporary runways. We would air drop them from C-130 Aircraft at heights up to 10', they survived, most of the time.
@proberts34

Yeah, something that heavy (~50,000 lbs, ~22,700 kg) needs a LAPES drop, a tried and true technique for delivering particularly heavy loads to a very specific area. For those mildly interested, look around for LAPES (low altitude parachute extraction system) drop. It's a fascinating, if potentially dangerous, procedure. For example, the tragedy at Ft. Bragg in 1987 was caused by the pilot coming in too steep and leveling off too late, which caused the C130 to hit the ground mid-procedure. Believe it or not, the C130 probably could have recovered from that on its own (such magnificent aircraft). But then the load was extracted and the aircraft's center-of-gravity shifted enormously, the pilot couldn't recover the aircraft, and it crashed into the trees.

I cant get over how loud that turbo is. It sounds like a full blown jet. If the sound was scaled up to a airliner turbofan it would be 1000 dB
I'd definitely recommend putting a couple safety chains on the C-frame as an extra safety measure incase the old rusty cables snap or someone hits the lever. But this will be a pretty cool restore and I look forward to seeing more of it.
Looking forward to the restoration on the D8, going to be epic. That would be a You Tube classic to see a job being done with all antique equipment, hope that idea pans out for you sir. Thanks for the ride along Mat, enjoyed it.

That turbo may be on its last leg, but it sounds amazing and my dog is pissed. Also I knew the ponies shared coolant to warm up the diesel. Didn't know the exhaust also heated the intake.

It sounded great but I was surprised they didn't just cut the exhaust on the pony and put a temporary diversion in place, instead of unbolting the manifold. If he is going to do a Christine style restoration, we should start placing bets on how many times it will try and kill him, 5 for me. We should name it for him too. Any ideas?

Great fun. I bought a 1939 D4 with putt motor in 1987. Still runs no problem in 2023. Putt motors were designed to warm up the diesel engine in cold climates because the two share the same coolant system. Even up here in Canada you can start the machine in winter.
