You do a great job of editing your videos. A lot of people don’t realize what is involved in producing what you do. A little piece of history: I live in Michigan. When I was about 11 my uncle was providing sand for the construction upgrade of parts of the main thoroughfare from Lansing to Grayling. US 27 was undergoing the new "limited access" highway upgrading. My uncle had a 100 acre farm within about 1/2 mile of the projected new road so he assembled bull dozers and earth movers and started to excavate sand from his property. I believe it was the sand that they used to mix the concrete. After the new "Expressway" was completed past his farm he put rubber tires on one of his D-8's so he could pull a gondola from an earth mover up the new concrete road loaded with the clean sand to the next staging area. As the staging area got further away he changed the gear ratios inside that D-8 so it could travel faster. I was staying at the farm for a week during the summer of about 1961 or 1962 and went with my Aunt when she took my Uncle out to the area where he was excavating the sand. When we got there we were all surprised by one of the dozers parked in a small lake of very clear and clean standing water. Over night the place where he was removing sand had filled up with water. I came back later that day and swam in 2 1/2 feet of water. It was warm and clean and just beautiful. Just as clear as a swimming pool but with a sandy bottom. For the next 50 some years my Dad's entire family came out to that little lake for our yearly 4th of July family gettogether. Covid 19 was the end of the reunions. The lake is still there to this day. ben/ michigan
You have got yourself a fantastic, powerful dozer. She is really nimble for her age and deserves a lot of TLC. Thank you for posting, much appreciated from the UK.
I have not driven a Dozer but spent time, years, cultivating with steel tracks. I was told you do far more damage with slack tracks than tight ones. Your D8 has more power than grip. If you don't edit out some of your scary bits, they will be classed as horror movies. Brilliant and told as it happened, thank you
It's funny, Matt, in the last video when you were pushing that brush pile at first I thought to myself that D8 really should not be struggling that much to push that pile. I realize it's a hefty pile of brush, but man.. that thing should be a beast with pushing power that is what it's made to do. I hope it's something easy for you to take care of, 3 minutes in and ready for a fun filled 40 more! Thanks man for all the hard work you share with us! edit: that is a pretty darn bright headlamp!!

Matt, thanks for sharing the TLC going into this old gal and how you fix her aching bones. The recovery operation brought back so many memories from when I ran the Recovery Section for 123rd Support Bn. 1st Armored Division from 1987-1989. We didn’t have the luxury of coming back the next day to get the equipment so we worked through the night. I had some of the hardest working, dedicated, professional recovery crew members I ever worked with in 23 years of service. Plus we had all the gear we could need including two fully equipped M88A1’s Tracked Recovery Vehicles. I believe that with a 3:1 purchase that Komatsu would’ve easily pulled Big Boy up the hill.
God Matt, I could just lay down and close my eyes and just listen to that D8 working in the distance with that turbo whine.
This will help me get through night shift thank you Matt hello from Australia
Great outcome, I have a rule that if I am tired and stressed and a job is going wrong then its time to secure the job and wait till morning. So glad to see you do the same. Thanks for another great video.
The old D343 was a great engine ,huge cubic capacity for a straight six, hair down to the hocks.
A fantastic video, Brought back childhood memories of my Dad operating an old "TD18", some 70 years ago. Keep up the good work and we are with you all the way.
You need to get an exhaust stack on that thing. Inhaling unburnt hydrocarbons can't be good for you.. Love this channel.
This would have been an ideal time to use Christine, the grader . It would have been nice to see her in action again after you'd pulled up the top soil. Really enjoy these videos and appreciate the time spent on making. We don't have anything like this in Scotland
In Vietnam, we used the same Cat to build Air Force bases from the ground up. A C-130 could cary 1 Cat + all the attachments. We would air drop them from 10', there were parachutes, and they were to slow the Cat's down and slow their descent. These were work horses that rarely let us down.
Use a cutting torch to melt the end of the cable. Was taught this hack over 40 years ago. Works great!!!

A comment on your starting procedure. When the main engine fires off, immediately put it to idle and allow it to idle for at least 30 seconds preferably 1 minute before you rev it up to allow oil pressure to build and stabilize. You have a great friend in Sam! Take care of that guy and thanks for referring me to his channel. I really like his and yours. Love those old machines.
The music at the start is food for the soul.

I just happen upon you video . In my early years my Father owned a strip mining company back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I spent many of day's riding on the the D8 with him. He would start the pony engine let it warm up then my job was to engage the leaver to start the main motor . If you was sitting in the operators seat the area to the right he had a wooden wire spool that was what I sat on . I miss my dad and your video brought back so many memories, Thank you !

He's already got a machine named Christine, so seems to me there is only one logical name for a dozer, sure it was a D9 in the movie, but Wikipedia says it was a D7 in the novel, so D8 splits the difference.

@@bgood2010 Christine was a car in a 1983 movie, a 1958 Plymouth Fury roughly the same vintage as the grader. But I was writing about another movie, Wikipedia says: "Killdozer! is a 1974 made for TV science-fiction horror movie, adapted from a 1944 novella of the same name by Theodore Sturgeon" "the bulldozer (a Caterpillar D9 in the movie, a Caterpillar D7 in the novella)" (so a D8 splits the difference) Of course there was also a bulldozer in the Christine move, but less said about that the better.

Hey, same!
Your video introduction really puts the size of your new garage in perspective when you compare it to the shed you built with the shipping containers. Fantastic space. No more working on the ground. Plenty of room. Out of the weather. I can see why you're always smiling now!
Amazing how improving the performance of such a small part can have such a massive effect on overall performance in such a huge piece of plant. Makes you realise how important it is having access to the correct operating/repair manual! Landscaping that area of soil outside the shop was easy work for the beast and will get even easier when you sort out the blade angle. I'm looking forward to seeing you at work at the steam show!
That D8 is just so impressive, I love those big old dozers. Nothing better then seeing it pushing dirt again!!!

good to see the old kitty back at work :) Actually surprised how clean she runs - they did a really good job on that turbo.
Funny how older machines as long as look after them just keep going. While new stuff brakes down every month.

I love the sound that the tracks make as it passes over the sprockets. As a lover of tanks and over tracked machinery. I think it's just really cool. But I also remember Matt saying that the track was a bit loose, so that might not be good. In any case, great video Matt! It kept me on the edge of my seat a bit there! Also that turbo sounds beautiful along with that engine :D
Nothing better than to see a big machine doing what it does best… I just love seeing the big girl pushing hard !! The sights and sounds are just great !

That rebuilt turbo makes that old monster sound really healthy.
I realize your current D8 exhaust system provides a great visual engine performance indicator, but a short stack could increase the operator comfort. I have found an appropriately sized truck drive shaft makes a durable exhaust stack. The only downside side is that it needs to be supported at the top to prevent breaking the exhaust elbow on the whistle. Keep up the good work Matt!!!
