I enjoy watching this channel so much. It brings back the memory of a story my dad told about going into town with his grandmother. She had two big black geldings hitched to her buggy, and when she got to the edge of town she would put him under the seat with the instruction to hold onto the seat springs on both sides and then she would turn those geldings loose to gallop up the only street in town to the end where there was a gentle hill, where she would wheel the team around in a 180 (he said the buggy was on two wheels and raising a dust cloud during) and then trot the team back up the street to her destination. It apparently was her signature entrance to town.

I cant believe how excited Im getting anticipating Lady birthing her foal, I hope youre able to show the delivery.

Lady still has a few months to go. The gestation period for horses is around 11 months.

I hope Jim and Brenda will video Lady giving birth too! I've watched lots of videos of horses and cows giving birth. And occasionally the horse or cow needs assistance for someone to pull the foal or calf out. So KZread does allow that to be filmed!

Baron is a fine horse! Only wonder how big is the difference in temper between him being a stallion to a gelding. Think we will see that with Duke and Earl. Baron really seems to be leaning into the traces, and pulling his fair share. Seems like he loves to go!

What a lovely pair of working horses, i think baron loves working. And he is very good at pulling. (in Australia we call pulling, snigging. It means the same thing).

HI Jim & Brenda - So fun watching the horses at work in the woods. When Jim lines up the horses and has them back-up to a log, it reminds me of learning how to parallel park, however, the horses are better at it than I ever was........must be the driver! God bless.....😊

Just came in from dragging a ton of Hemlock branched out to the field off the lawn (about 30 of them! some 8 inches in diameter, from the last big wet snow storm where we got 30 inches of snow. to find this video so welcome rest and as always an enoyable video on Baron's training etc. thanks for sharing and giving this old man a break God speed. Wow, heard that was a bad blizzard/storm with high winds. Tornado s down further to the south. When the hot and cold of the spring collide, makes for a powerful storm. Good work. Hello from Alaska.

My grandkids just love to watch Grandpa Jim -- it's the only video they request! They know all the horses names and when not watching the video, they play logging with horses with their Legos! They also re-enact the pulling out the UPS truck from the ditch except they call it the ABC truck lol! Thanks so much for a good kid-clean video and no sleazy language or awful clothing.

Nice for Bill to have a pair horse that wants to go as fast as he does 😊

Isn't it just like anything...teenagers ! Challenge leadership and full of energy ! Nice to see the horses working, yes its a standing issue, but it will be OK in time with Jims training. Have a great week.

The lesson is that if one wants to work with horses one has to plan ahead, to organize, to be considerate, to accept limitations , to be patient and acquire a high frustration tolerance and never, ever take out one's bad mood on a horse. Jim exemplifies all these qualifications and that's why his horses are the way they are - dependable. Baron is going to be very good horse, too.

Yep, you reap what you soe. Well said. I think , in a way, many farmers have less compassion today because they use tractors instead of horses, I did not know that but looking back now I see that. I remember the very old farmers from when I was little, they were tough but generally more compassion, in some ways. But they all hard working folks.

Jim and Brenda , you'll really are an inspiration to everyone...youlls tenacity, work ethic, dedication and love for horses is amazing...Jims knowledge of horses is priceless and Brenda's patiences and support to Jim is remarkable...thank you both for these educational and entertaining videos , God bless and prosper you both 🙏

Wow! Baron is mad for pulling, trying to trot and clearly winded, when Jim pulled up for a blow. He would easily kill himself or break his wind if permitted. I thank God he is in the right hands.

I am truly amazed that Barron is so willing to pull and seems not at all hesitant. Standing still is usually difficult for a young horse.

You both works hard (especially Brenda)..not to mention the team..had to laugh when Jim was saying Baron could be a stinker..good days and bad days..not wanting to work at times..he's just a baby and will learn..maneuvering those stones was scary..I used to ride in the woods and those things were tough to get through..backwards was even harder..when they listen and take their time to ' feel ' their way through it becomes less scary..but one miss-step can be disastrous .. I'm fairly new to your channel..someday I hope to have horses again..the pain of losing my last one in 2015 was just too much but time does heal..as always prayers and blessings to all

Got some real nice horses Jim and Brenda

You can always put a strap or lead shank from his near side bit ring to his near side hame ring, loose enough so he can turn his head normally, but short enough that he can't reach Bill. It is autocorrect for a biter. My little gal went through a period of that when she first started working in a team with her daughter. She was constantly wanting to bite her daughter for the first few weeks. I had a strap with a snap on each end, I forget what they are called, but they are for big hitches when you are using gee sticks and buck backs with only one set of driving lines on two of the horses. I snapped one end on the left side of her bit and the other end to her hame ring. There was enough slack so she could turn right without it pulling on her, but not enough to reach her teammate. She went to give her daughter a vicious bite going down the road, and got herself in the mouth with all the force she had intended to give her daughter. That was pretty much then end of the biting. I don't remember her doing it again. I was able to take the strap off after a few days, and she never did it again. Baron is getting to that teenage boy overconfident stage. He thinks he knows it all now. I'm seeing him pushing a little. He's not as confused as he was, and he's testing to see what he can get away with. He's not relying on you like he was, and he isn't respecting Bill like he respected Kenny. I think he senses that Bill is a bit nervous, and more of a follower than a leader. That said, he is still doing very well. Its just a stage that he has to get through. He has to learn to be confident without being overconfident. He has to learn to rely on your direction, even when he thinks he knows what he is doing. He has to learn that work happens every day, even when he's tired. He has to learn that you won't push him too far, that you are watching out for him even when the work is hard. When I was watching you back him over those stones, I was reminded of a pony I had forty years ago. I got the little guy half starved to death and blind in one eye, not quite a year old. I ended up breaking him to drive in a cart, and I also made a little work harness and sled for him. My stepfather used to dump fire wood to be split in the side yard, so it wouldn't make a mess right in front of the house. It was my job to split it and stack it on the porch. The porch was at grade level, so I could drive the pony and sled in one side, let him stand on the porch while I stacked the wood, and drive him off the other end. He ended up being a great little pony and very handy to have for little chores like that. The main thing we had to overcome was that he had to learn to trust me to watch his right side, and I had to be utterly perfect about not letting him run into something on that side. I had to always keep that right line a little tight on him, because he tended to drift toward the side he could see. Once he realized I wouldn't let him blunder into anything, he began to trust me implicitly and was utterly reliable. He didn't even spook when things came around from that side, like you'd expect. I guess Baron has to go through the same thing. He has to realize that you are watching out behind him, and protecting him as much as you can. He can't see it, but you can. When he realizes that, he will learn to be confident in you, rather than only confident in himself. Just a thought, Brenda, he might be a bit quieter standing if you move you hand away from his mouth a bit. You are putting a little pressure on his mouth when you do that, not much, but the weight of your hand. It also is tempting to him since colts just like to be mouthy and chew on everything. If you drop your hand a foot or two down the line, he might stand a bit better.

Think half of America is looking for spring but just like the horses we have to take the good days with the not so good and wish people could understand how long it actually takes to train any horse thank you both also wish they knew how much work to keep horses & equipment Clean and in shape thank you both 🙏

I totally agree. Horses do have bad days. Even my 15 year old gelding will usually work great however, he also has days when he thinks he should be eating grass or laying in the sun.

You have to handle so many variables. Thanks for explaining things as stones, power level in forward or reverse, etc. Too much data no longer commonly known.

Young horses are a lot of work, we have a two year old mare, she is easy one day and totally nuts the next day, if there is a lot of wind she cant even walk to the pasture without rearing 😅

I got a kick out of how Bill barely leaned into the cellar on the log pull, letting Baron have in for all he was worth!😂

Brenda, I am amazed at the skill you show with the camera. How do you keep your walking pace looking like you are gliding along? The film looks like you are flying so smoothly. Even getting on the boulder at the end was a glide up. The leaves this time of year are looking so flat and smooth. I love walking on the trails looking for the green to show threw. My flower beds now have Snow Drops peeking out.

In southwest Ohio, my daffodils have been blooming for three weeks. Now the hyacinths are coming out. They smell so good!

We already have leaves on our trees down here in North Alabama!!! We are almost thru spring! I do wish we would get about a foot of snow before summer though! God bless, and thanks so much for the great videos! Also everyone should say a little prayer for our true President Trump tonight that he will be okay while in the hands of the enemy!

Jim, surprising Baron ran out to the hitch at the truck bed and positioned himself asop.

In my experience it can take more than a year to say a colt is trained. Even then you can have off days, just like the rest of us. Really appreciate how Bill is being a good mentor even though Baron wants to be dominant little brother 🙄 🤣

My top favorite way of training a horse is the California Horsemanship Vaquero method. I've heard that people made a really good horse a really light in the rain horse. tooking them up 5 to 6 years to get them that way. And some guys make some really nice Cow horse to a trail riding horse.

Since Bill has always been very energetic and eager to go fast, I was wondering if he has a hard time keeping up with Baron? Being a "growing boy", Baron seems to have endless energy! Watching Jim maneuver the cart and horses around the rocky area is a difficult job. Thanks to Jim's experience driving horses, he and the horses manage those areas without any trouble. Hopefully Baron will soon outgrow his wanting to bite his team mate while standing still. On a different subject, I watch a couple of KZread weathermen that have great forecasts, "Ryan Hall Y'all" and "POW Ponder". I wonder if you all watch those channels? According to them there is yet another snow storm moving across the midwest and may soon bring more snow to the New England area. Those two weather channels are great if you don't watch them.

Baron sure wasn't happy with his bit, even out in the wood lot.

I’ve watched ye work Bill to wear him down so that ye could team him up. Baron seems bout an equal to him. I’d say they’ll make a good team. My uncle Doc cured a mule from biting by grabbing an ear with each hand and biting the mule on the nose till he drew blood. Doc was born in 1890 and had his own way of training hosses and mules. My grand pap, Doc’s dad was born in 1861 and a hoss trader.

Great to see Baron doing so well! With all his energy are you still working with the evener slightly offset?

I think with your recent Misfortune with your horses Baron and Bill are doing very good with your experience you'll have Barron right where you want him

Jim and Brenda practice ,sustainable forestry .Cut marked trees in hardwood bush. Plant trees in softwood bush with grandchildren . So to answer your question . Jim will be leaving a legacy of a better forest after he dies . But he is in no hurry to do that .Cheers

Baron probably doesn't understand a word of command as i certainly think it all sounds the same mumble. Bill teaches him and pushes and pulls him. I was always taught to use completely different sounds for each command to a horse as you would do for a dog to understand

Baron, is a very good listener, (when he wants to be), and definitely understands commands as all Jim's horses do. For example, one time Jim said "Geee!" to Baron, and Baron quickly and instantaneously went right almost like reflex or a sprinter off a gun shot out of the blocks,... excellent reflex to Jim's request...also Baron was solo at the time. This is one of many observations of Baron's listening skills.

How are Duke and Earl doing? When does their training start?

Re: Baron biting Bill. Sometimes using "The Voice" to rebuke an erring horse is enough. My horses seem to know they are being bad and will knock it off when they hear my "Daddy Ain't Happy!" tone of voice speak their name. Of course the lines help too.

Their tails look so pretty. As well as the weather. Looking forward to the season changing. Wondering what percentage of the fields work coming up will be done with horses vs. machines?

Hard to put a % on it . But Massey Ferguson tractor pulling baler and maybe a little pulling cultivator .The Oliver tractor sits in the machine shed and does nothing .So a good guess 75 % by the horses and Jim and Brenda 100% .Cheers

My guess is in the event of a harness malfunction and a rearing or fighting horse, the hames wont impale the other horse.
