My 8 year old Homewater shit the bed this morning (gushing out of what I would call a tundish under the sink like it was just straight mains). It's been trickling out for a few days as if it was taking hours to complete it's cycle and then this morning it gave out after making an interesting noise as I opened the kitchen tap. Thanks so much for this video, It's given a handy man a little more confidence to tear into the thing and see what doesn't look right.

I shall follow up and say the shuttle valve was dead. Sadly you can't just buy the tiny valve inside whos rubbery coating had perished and so instead I had to buy a whole new part for £125 but the softener is back up and running once more. I have a reminder set for every 3 months to test the water to see when I might need to do the resin.

I changed the shuttle valve 2 years ago with a LOT of help from this video.....but after a quiet spell, problems persist. The softener is always getting stuck and pushing water out at a high rate of knots. Regenerations are getting longer and longer too. I will check the injector next and watch the whole video again. Thanks for this.

Hi, this is a great video! thank you so much - it is difficult to find good instruction on the Harvey models. It would be great if you could do a short video on how to set the brine level adjuster - there seems to be a lag between adjusting it and how much salt it is using, not quite sure how this works.

Simply fantastic strip down video, Ihavent solved my problem but am confident that my gearbox is all intact. My shuttle valve is knackered so will be in touch with TheWaterBoy for a replacement. My softener whilst basically the same had some slight differences in design but it didnt stop me succesfully stripping down. My gearbox housing has a metal pin each side that sticks out of the bottom, makes working on the gearbox a little trickier, also the paddle design was different but the whole 3-9 and 6-12 oclock still made sense on my design. Couldnt have done it without it as I'd never have got the gears back in the right order!! Thanks

Hi- great video thanks. I have a question- my parents have this make of softer, I have cleaned it out as they told me it’s not working. When I re- connected it I notice that the waste pipe joint leaks as soon as I add pressure to the softer. The more pressure the worse the leak. Would this suggest that there is an internal fault and that the pressure is simply being forced back out the waste pipe? Any thing I can try ? Thanks Bill.

I will never buy or recommend their products again. I've always been impressed with it until this. Minimum fee of £135 for an engineer and he will then decide on the price of the repair as Harvey cannot quote me even though I told them what the issue is.

Thanks for the video, it has been very useful. I have a quick question please. My S3, or Harvey H20 (identical to the one you are disassembling) is overflowing. I've taken it apart as per your video and everything looks ok with the exception of the brine valve. If I take the brine valve and submerge it in a sink of water, the float mechanism does not rise. I'm obviously assuming that it should rise and fall with the level of the water and that effectively controls the water flow into the brine tank, and that this is the most lively reason the tank is overflowing. I just wanted to run my thoughts past you before ordering a new brine valve. Really appreciate your video and help.

Hi the pipe that comes from the shuttle valve to the sink wastes has water comeing out all the time. Therefore the salt blocks lasted 2 days as it is continually running water through this pipe. What does the shuttle valve assy do and is that likely the cause. Twintec s4 about 4 yrs old. Ty

Hello there. Could I ask you one question please. After doing a strip down and rebuild (thank you very much!) and refilled my resin tanks with 4L each tank and also replaced the brine valve. I installed everything back and seems to be working okay apart from one think. When I connected and turned on the hard water inlet and soft outlet valves. Water started to come into the Brine Tank. The water rose to approximately 10-20cm above the salt platform. Great I thought! But after 30mins or so I noticed that the water level in the Brine Tank was rising ever so slowly (its now like 60cm). My question is: How does the water enter into the Brine Tank? I assume it comes down the brine line and into the brine valve/float mechanism. I assume this has a dual function purpose to [1] let water in and [2[ to suction up brine into the tanks for the regeneration. Thanks in advance PS The gearbox seems to work okay, as it did a regen on both tanks after I opened the taps for a few minutes.

  • @TheWaterBoyuk

The easiest way to test the leak is not the brine valve is to pull out the brine line from the side the injector and plug the injector with a 1/4 inch plug. If the tank keeps filling up, it's not the brine valve.

It is draining continuously into the drain (the thin pipe that comes out next to 22mm flow and return). cleaned the salt accumulated from the casing, removed and refitted the various tubes by giving it good blow hoping that any stuck valve / debris will give way and it will start working normal again but it didnt help. Some people say it must be shuttle valve. Is that almost certain? Please advise how i can open the shuttle valve to check if the valve or any small internal part is stuck, so I can clean and get it working again ( a short video on how to repair a shuttle valve would be great). Low pressure or faulty brine valve, not shutting off fully. The early H2O series suffered with brine valve problems. Another indication is air in the water causing spluttering when you turn a tap on. Hope this helps.

If you are a big family and using 700 liters, it will regen twice a day. The Salt consumption is approximately block per person per month.

Hi there, please can you advise me? I installed a Harvey Arc water softener today. I did all the plumbing properly, installed a non return valve, the bypass set, all the drainage. But I made a really embarrassing silly mistake, I connected the hoses on the inlet and outlet the wrong way around. When I turned the bypass set on the water pressure was really low, all this yellow fluid came out the kitchen tap, I’m thinking that may have been the brine in the tank? Will this permanently damage the Water Softener? Do think I need to call Harvey and tell them what I did? Can the tank be refilled with brine? Or do you think that was resin? I’m really stressing about this. The softener was only running for very short periods whilst I was trying to figure out what was wrong. When I realized what I’d did i immediately swapped the hoses round the correct way, and the water is running fine and clear. I’d really appreciated your advice. The water pressure is around 1.8 -1.5 bar if that would make any difference. Thank you for taking the time to make such detailed video All the best.

@@TheWaterBoyuk I bought it used online, i met the guy and collected the machine, he bought it in July 21 but he moved and no longer had room to fit the machine in his new place. He only used the W/S for a year and it sat idle for a year. I called Harvey's and they transferred the remainder of the warranty to me, July 24, the Arc comes with a 3 year warranty as opposed to the S4 Twin Tec which comes with a 10 year warranty, Iv'e been told the S4 and the Arc are the same machines just with a different housing. Thank you very much for your reply. I was very impressed with how you did that strip down and rebuild, moreover your vocal description was perfect describing all the all parts and your techniques. I should add for anyone else reading this, I'm not a professional plumber. The install was quite complex as I had to do in install by hanging the pipework and bypass set from rods and clamps on the ceiling above the tank, putting my arms in between the central heating pipes that were hot in a very small cupboard, and build a shelf for the W/S to sit on also above the tank. I was quite tired after the install, and after all that i read the instructions wrong for the inlet and outlet. Do you think i should tell Harvey what i did? Also may i ask the yellow liquid that came out of the tap, will that regenerate on its own? Thanks again, have a great weekend all the best.

it is indicating that it is unable to jump of of the regen. This maybe that there was a loss of pressure during the cycle or you have a faulty shuttle valve. If you switch off the flow and return to the softener and leave for 5 mins, then turn back on, it may jump out after a few minutes. If it doesn't I would look at changing the shuttle valve. OK I understand now. That sort of era of the H2O was burdened with a few problems. The salty water was mainly due to the brine valve not closing down when in service and it drew salt in. The low pressure could mean the resin has gone, but not 100% without carrying out a full diagnosis. These compact non electric softeners are great if you have a small space but not a patch on a simple high capacity softener.

The orange water is bacteria because it has been stagnant and a few regeneration of salt water would sanitise. I would be tempted to run some 3% hydrogen peroxide through. In normal operation 15mm of brine is taken. when the brine drops too low the brine valve checks off.

Hi, would you service a Harvey H20 softener in south east London? Kind regards

I would love to but it's a bit too far for me to travel currently. Our service side is really busy as we cover the East Midlands. There are dealers down your way, but I wouldn't be able to recommend anyone.

Hi, tried to get someone to have a look but have not had much luck. The softener sounds like it regenerating everyday (1-2 times) but the water is still coming out very hard. However, when I do a regeneration cycle manually (by pressing the button and turning 360 deg) the water starts to soften until the automatic regeneration cycles again. Do you think is to do with a faulty shutter valve or could it be something else? Would be really grateful for your advice.

Hi Could you tell me the difference between Harvey’s HV3 & HV4 water softeners? Also did you get your name from an Adam Sandler movie of the same name? You could have the slogan “Now that’s some high quality H2O” 😂 Regards

is it regenerating or running to drain? If it is running to drain, turn it off by the bypass for 5 mins and turn back on. The regeneration may stop. If it is constantly regenerating from one regen to another, it would be likely to be water usage.

Hi, absolutely great video, clear and precise. A problem occurred with my Harvey machine a couple of months ago, there was water continually flowing out the waste. Partially stripped down the shuttle, put it back together, issue resolved. Just recently the water coming from the taps taste of salt momentarily until i run the tap, I guess this is probably after a regen. Any idea if this is further shuttle problems or something else? thanks.

Hey Mike. Thanks for the kind words. We'll done for the repair. Sounds like the brine valve letting in salt after regen. It may not be checking off correctly. Give it a clean out 👍
