When I ordered my first FD (large), in March, I ordered the oil less pump. However, I talked to my HR salesperson about maintenance for the pump and he said that HR recommends that the pump be sent back every 2-3 years to have the tip bearings replaced and something else. The cost of that maintenance would be around $350...plus shipping, plus the downtime of being without the pump. The thought of sending a 45 lb pump back to HR every 2-3 years and spending $350+ for maintenance was a deal breaker. I changed my order from the oil less to the Premier and so far am happy with my choice. That maintenance issue doesn’t seem to be widely publicized by HR, which is annoying.

@x x Unfortunately, I think you took my comment as a total slam against HR and it wasn’t. Yes, I’m critical that they aren’t more up-front about the oil less maintenance, but I think they are an amazing company providing a great product at pretty reasonable prices. The ability to freeze dry foods at home is mind blowing, something I never thought would be possible. I totally support HR! When I’ve had questions or issues, they have been very responsive and provided whatever help I needed in a very timely and professional manner. I’m sorry you felt the need to take this opportunity to slam a good company. The question is why? You provided no evidence or rationale.

​@x x I don't know that it's shoddy, they just have been evolving with experience because they had no idea what kind of pump they needed, nor did they know how to care for them. Hence, they didn't last more than 18 to 24 months. It was customers who figured out how to maintain the pumps. So they have improved by getting better pumps, but they cost more. There is no competition because they cost too much to make I'm sure. I hope they get their act together on the pumps because the machine it's self is great! ​ Keep in mind, the first Ford vehicle, the first airplanes,, the first of anything is not the best. It takes time to perfect everything.

Great video on unboxing this thing. I look forward to the comparison. The question on my mind and probably on some others too is the reliability and maintenance factors over time on repeated use. I'm not sure if you plan on testing this aspect or maybe, after doing your initial duties with "oil-less", you plan on reverting to the premiere asap (which would be fine too).

Brian, your utility room is basically an echo chamber. Try hanging some thick curtains on the walls. You'll be amazed at how much noise they absorb. The thicker the material, the better...

My husband and I started with the oil less pump. This does help us to know if we made the right choice. You definitely don't want it in the kitchen. Cooking at the same time the freeze dryer is running seems to stress the machine.

We have the oil free pump and it does a great job. From what I can see the premier is really nice and the maintenance is almost nothing. Can't go wrong either way, but if money is tighter then I would probably go premier. Either way we figure our freeze dryer pays for itself in under a year.

We bought the standard pump that came with the HR because its included in the price. We plan on purchasing a premiere pump later. We did the math, if you order the premium pump the FD is the same price as if buying the standard included pump. We wanted the back up pump. And didnt want to wait for the FD. Premier pump is my favorite of the 3!

I bought the oil less pump when they first came out. I love it. It is MUCH quieter than the old oil pump. You mentioned the convenience of not having to change the oil which is significant, but you didn't talk about the money saved by not having to buy the oil. In our case that is a lot. I would never go back to the oil pump. I freeze dry a lot more now because of the reduced maintenance and operating cost.

$1400 buys a lot of oil, as well as the maintenance cost of replacing the seals when they wear out.

The heat is the deal breaker for me. I live in New Mexico and already have heat issues with the freeze dryer. I have to run it next to an open window with a fan blowing out the hot air. Mind you it's only spring time here. It will be interesting to see how bad it gets in the summertime when the temps get above 100 F.

Very interesting, I was unaware there was more than one model of the new oil less pump and that you cannot choose which one you get. I received the white rectangle new oil less pump in November, and have had no problems with it. The only issue I have is the inconsistent information I receive from HR customer service on the minimal maintenance on it (dry flush and placement) I hear from support one thing and then from a different support person an opposite answer. This would be a great future video about how to care for our pumps. Great video!!

I have heard that running the pump for a minute after your cycle is done helps flush out anything that could have gotten into the system. If you have the older style hose that is a thicker diameter it tends to get condensation and that was why they used to recommend an alcohol flush. If you order the newer narrow hose or get their insert, running for a few after the batch should do the trick.

As I told you a month ago, I'm still saving to get my freeze dryer. Almost there. Yay! 😁🎉 I'll have to pass on the oiless pump though. I've worked long and hard to be able to buy the freeze dryer. I've watched almost all of your videos on it. Some a few times. I've taken notes. I've seen the oil changes. I feel like it's not to bad, nor, to much work, for the price difference. But, thank you for sharing. 👍

Don't be upset or fall for the lie of a "maintenance free" pump. This pump you still have to blow out the junk buildup and you have to spend another $350 every few years to get the seals replaced. This video shows only "First Impressions" and not a long term review. Always take reviews from people who just bought a new device with a grain of salt. Their opinions change over time when they get hit with the first bill. Think about Hybrid cars that save tons of money on gas, then you get a $12,000 battery replacement bill five years in because it died. The reviews would have been five stars all the way up until that repair bill.

When I ordered mine, I told the sales guy I was pretty much sold on the oil-less pump, but asked his opinion . He steered me away from it and strongly recommended the premier based on feedback from the techs. He said you can pretty much count on rebuilding the oil-less pump every couple years at a substantial expense. Then he said he had no idea how long the premier pumps last because they never see any come in for repair. I'm on my 8th batch with my machine and the oil is still crystal clear. Thanks Brisk for taking the time to bring this info to all us nerds 🤓

My standard pump failed after several years. Major leaking mess. Went with the oil-less pump. Glad I did. It’s actually quieter than the original for mine and no oil and no oil mess. Not having to deal with oil anymore has been great.

The outlet where the water came out is the check valve.

I work in capital equipment that utilizes both oil bath rotary vacuum pumps and dry scroll vacuum pumps. We recommend that tip seals be replaced on an annual basis and the most common failure that I see on these pumps is the main bearing. Oil pumps last for years and years and years with regular oil changes. In our application, these pumps provide roughing vacuum for a turbomolecular pump, which pulls a much higher vacuum level. The risk with an oil-based pump in that application is backstreaming of oil if there were a vacuum leak, because of the higher differential pressure. In freeze drying, this really won't be an issue. Given all the cons of the scroll pump (heat, maintenance costs, downtime during maintenance, etc) I would only go with the dry scroll pump if there was a requirement to do so. For home freeze drying, the Premier Pump will be more than sufficient if regularly maintained.

Anest Iwata is likely the manufacture of the oil less pump. Yours looks similar to larger vacuum units we have at work.

Have an idea for you. Stick with a pad to clean/dry the shelves. Hard for me to get my hand in between the shelves to fully wipe them down

My oilless pump came with my first freeze dryer and no oil pump. My pump is compact sealed in a white housing to match my fd. I ran about a dozen cycles. Only problem i had was moisture one time. If you open the door and run pump for half hour in clears. I have an idea for you to try. Ice cream juice. I have an ice cream maker and its a deal you mix up the cream then churn it. I was thinking if i batch out alot of icecream mixture and only add water before churning i may really like homemade icecream more. Still on the learning curve on what works for my eating habits.

i'd like to see the energy consumption between the different pumps.

The oil less pumps are so likely to fail -- Enjoy them while they last as I certainly did. My recent upright one probably lasted 5 loads if that. It just doesn't pull the vacuum. At least it didn't scream to the heavens as my other two did and I was told that it would scream and you can not have a conversation with another when the pump is screaming. One of the pumps seized while it was screaming and it started as a cricket sound in that very load and when it seized, there were metal shavings on the countertop and the ball bearings were rattling in the pump. I run 4 medium FDs, all oil less and even the white ones failed. I have 2 of them along with the upright one ready to ship back. HR recommends with the oil less that you start your vacuum freezing at -5. You have to do dry flushes on at least with the upright ones as water gets into the pump and if you don't do a dry flush, it will rust out your bearings and try getting the grease off of your countertop. Having said all this, I still really love my FDs.

It may be worth checking with harvestright to see if it is a good idea to jave the fan on the pump. I know it is instinctive to think cooler is better but if the pump has been designed to run at 130f it may be better for it to opperate at that temperature.

Harvest Right sent us the white oiless pump. It is rectangular and is not tall like the one you have. It does not get hot to the touch and sits nicely on the Harbor Freight table you recommended in a previous video. We love the oiless pump!

Oh you will when it dies and you have to send it back in for the factory for maintenance and 5-6 weeks for the return and it only costs you $350.

@@kakuretatsumi715 They have no idea of the disappointment coming to them. Thank God, mine were under warranty. Wait till it screams to the heavens. You really need a backup pump or you will be waiting for quite some time for the pump to ship back and forth and the time to do the repair. I don't know why people say there is no maintenance. Of course their is and it requires a dry flush occur every time your load finishes. And those upright pumps really put out the heat.

Thank you for doing this! HR upgraded my premier pump to an oil less pump and I wasn't quite sure if it was a good thing or not.

We have a new medium-size HR unit, but its oil-free pump is low, square, and white, not tall, round, and gray like yours. I hope you will eventually discuss our pump model.

The black residue is most likely the carbon material the vain’s are made from. Aircraft use a similar technology in the vacuum pumps that power instruments. These pumps are bolted directly to the engines, therefore operate at a much higher temp then what your seeing. I would be concerned about asymmetrical cooling that you introduced with a single fan. I would build ductwork or use multi fans. Reliability? I believe (no experience) the oil pump will be much more reliable due to the lubrication by the oil. The oil less pump relies upon a “black” material (probably a carbon composite) to provide the seal lubrication. This carbon material does wear (you saw the initial wear after start up) and it is fragile. How many hours of operation due they expect before requiring a rebuild. I’d want a bit more performance/durability numbers from the mfg before I’d spend the extra $$$ I’m curious as to what the cost is to rebuild the pump (not the electrical but the actual vacuum producing part. There is a reason it is only warranted for 1 year!

What is the difference between the home and pharmaceutical versions of these dryers? I want to get one for museum taxidermy.

I have a question about the premier oil pump. In the past when I've used oil pumps for things like air conditioning or laboratory work, they often would fill the area with a fine mist of oil that had an odor and could not have been too healthy. Have they solved that problem with the newer oil pumps? If that is still an issue I could probably justify the oil-less just on that basis.

I bought that same upright model in 2018 and it needed repair this spring, 2022. I got a lot of work out of it. There is conflicting information on whether or not you should periodically run some alcohol through the air intake and blow it out the exhaust outdoors, to clean it. HR sent me an instruction page which "highly recommended" running rubbing alcohol through the pump. Can you verify if this protocol has remained or changed? It may affect the life of your new pump!

I'm tasked to build a stand for a new large Harvest Right with oil less pump. Do you have any recommendations for height or any other recommendations that might help? Thank you in advance.

Is the premiere pump quiet enough for an apartment with shared walls?

I’m pretty sure if you use the oil this pump enough you’ll make up for the cost of the oil that you would’ve had to buy plus you’re saving yourself a bunch of time and that’s also valuable

I understand you have to freeze your trays prior to freeze drying (to cut down on time)...so I'm assuming you bought extra trays as well? Are there other items you'd recommend to buy extras of...obviously mylar bags and oxygen absorbers...anything else?

Your room is all hard surfaces. Those hard surfaces will magnify sounds by bouncing them around. In a carpeted spare bedroom with real curtains and bedding, I imagine the noise would be quieter? And I could also close off the heat to that room as well in the winter - which is when I'd be doing as much drying as possible, after I've pre-frozen all my stuff. Well that's the plan anyway, I haven't actually bought a unit quite yet. Yeah, I can already imagine that I'll be freeze drying in ALL seasons. Never mind lol

I don't have experience with oil-less vacuum pumps, but as far as air compressors go, oil-less is less efficient and less durable. I don't see an oil-less vacuum pump holding up as long. I've seen old vacuum pumps in labs at university that were 20+ years old and still running strong. As long as you keep good oil in them, a properly sized vacuum pump that doesn't overheat should last almost indefinitely. Heat from running undersized or past rated duty-cycle kills motors, and contaminated oil kills pumps.

How many watts is the large Harvestright, thx

Let us know if you find out there is something we should do to maintain this pum. I had to have the oil less pump because in the 8 years since I bought my first pump I have lost so. much of my eye sight that I was making a mess every time I changed the oil. My late husband always took care of the pump maintenance until he died 6 years ago. In 8 years /weI have had 3 oil pump. The originals only lasted about 2 years. Then I got the one before the Premier. HR had no idea how to maintain the original pumps so they didn't last long. Then when I got my oil free one they told me to run water through it once in a while to clean it out. WHAT???? NO WAY WAS I GOING TO PUT WATER IN A PUMP.! I'm an non-mechanical women but I knew that couldn't be right. So I really don't know what to do to maintain it. I read on line that I should dry flush it by plugging it into the wall rather than the drying chamber, open the door and run the pump for 15 minutes. No idea how often, so I do it every 3 or 4 loads. I do that, but I don't know how or if that does anything honestly. So. if you figure something out, please PLEASE let us know!

Which pump is the quietest?

I'm looking to upgrade my JB pump and I'm wondering if there are pumps from companies other than Harvest Right that I might buy that might be better. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

There are people on the Mewe and Facebook Groups that have other pumps. That would be a great place to post the questions. Make sure you have a high enough cfm and micron rating. I will say this, HR rebrands these pumps for specific requirements of freeze drying. The other pumps are not meant specifically for freeze drying.

I know you run your freezer a lot more than we probably will but it'd be nice to know how often you changed your oil and the costs? I now use stainless steel tables, but that cart was from Harbor Freight. The oil free pump needs rebuilt by HR every 2000-3000 hours

An American friend of mine said that the Harvestright Oil Less pump does not pass the engineering specification standards of the large scale industrial-commercial freeze drying vacuum pumps used by the NOAH'S ARK FOODS, INC in 1975 and was closed in 1980 under extremely mysteriously circumstances.

It looks like the stand up version is no longer being sold on their site. Have you tried the newer version (not the low profile), but the lay-down version of the "Eagle"? Do you have a review video available? Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

I don't have that pump to try out but it looks like the same motor as the old eagle. Maybe it has slight mods?

@@live.life.simple. My site glass is leaking after less than a month of use. After reviewing your FB group comments, it appears it has been somewhat common recently. I was thinking I should have gone with an oil-less pump.

Maybe there’s a sealed chamber of oil inside

Why did HR send you the Eagle? I thought that was the prior version of the oilless. I have the current version of he oilless pump (the white) and it hardly puts off any heat at all. Same sound but not at all that much heat generating. *** You do need to perform a 30 minute dry flush on either the Eagle (yours) or the white on (mine. ) after every cycle. I unhook the hose from the pump and perform the dry flush while my FD’r is defrosting. 😃

@@arlenet4916 are you in any of the Facebook groups? Or Brian’s Facebook group to be specific? If you search the term “Oilless pump dry flush, you will have the desired results. My name is Kim W. (Not going to give my last name on KZread) but you’ll see a lot of comments by me on my dry flush routine. Brian’s a good guy. Very knowledgeable. I’m sure he’ll make a video on it soon. (My fdr’s names are Hughes, Louie and Dooey. Dooey does the stinky food, hence the name”Doo”ey... 😂

For all the videos you do using the Harvestright you should be paid, haha.

The pump is plugged in to an outlet that is controlled by the freeze dryer. The machine will control when the pump turns on.

@@live.life.simple. I’m confused. I just did my first batch this weekend. However when I did the beginning test the pump never turned on by itself, I had to turn it on. When I did the real batch the pump also didn’t turn on, I had to turn it on and was on through out the freezing and drying cycles…. I appreciate any help I can from you.

@@nadiabarreraberber7429 plug the pump directly into a wall outlet and use the switch on the pump to see if it is working properly. If it is, leave it to the on position and plug it into the back of the freeze dryer and that plug will turn on when it needs to.

How many reading this have had trouble with their freeze drier breaking down?

I got the oil-less pump but it looks completely differently than the one you show in this video. It is a white, rectangular box shape. No model# or anything on the bottom or back other than for the power supply. I haven't used it yet so nothing to report. But the lack of a serial or model# on the pump is disappointing when it comes to Harvest Right's Q&A practices. Its also concerning that they are switching up models of oil-less pumps so dramatically when what you show looks fundamentally different (and more robust) then what they sent me.

You got the newer model. Think about why they replaced the original standard pump. Its because it had so many issues they needed to find a better one. You should be happy you got a newer, and hopefully longer lasting one.

I also got the white model in November and it is running through my head why two different models?? A bit concerning although I haven't had any problem with my pump only with the inconsistent information coming from HR customer service. I can see why now, they are dealing with two different oiless pumps. I've heard the pump can go below, level, or above the FD. I've heard you do not need to dry flush and have also heard you must dry flush. And I've also heard there is no need for a fan and that you need a fan, very confusing info!! What may be true for one may not be for another but they really need to get them straight and let us their customers know how we are to care for our pumps.

Man, I had my heart set on this pump....but I live in an apartment.

I really appreciate this video-it would have been a real bummer to spend all that $$$, and it to be too loud !!. @@truthhurtz2793 The premier only needs an oil change every 25 batches. Even if you are running it constantly that's only 4-6 oil changes per year. It only holds about a qt of oil.

I thought maybe I should post this here as I did it below in a reply to "n mc" posting in which they states they have had "7" "seven" of these stand up pumps fail. As noted in our response below, ours failed at 7 months, not very encouraging. Also when we bought our machine from HR 7 months ago, there were no maintenance instructions that we could find in the HR info. At a later date my wife read a comment somewhere about the pump inlet needing to be higher than the freeze dryer outlet. We did arrange our pump to freezer unit so that higher position was correct. Other than that there was no info on what to do with this pump other than attaching the hose and plugging it in. When we placed the order for the complete unit, we were told the pump may need to be refurbished with a seal kit after several years of use and that we would be able to buy the kit and install that ourselves when that time came. When our pump failed we were told it would have to be sent in and that doing the "rebuild" would not be possible for us to do ourselves. HR did email us a shipping label for return costs and it is being covered under the warranty. My worry is in another 4 to 7 months it's going to fail again right at the end of our 1 year warranty period. Looking at several of the comments below there does seem to be something going on with the oil less pump/pumps (not sure what the "white one" is) that needs to be addressed by HR. For us, if it fails again at or near the end of our warranty period, that along with the shipping and cost of $350 to rebuild it will mean a $2000 cost for one year of use with no guarantee of how much longer it will run before the next failure. Also that rebuild is on the pump only, not the motor itself, so another unknown. It's pretty obvious to us that HR should stand behind the pumps for longer than 1 year at that cost of operation. It's also obvious that they probably knew this pump was going to be problematic and why it is only covered for a year, pretty sad. n mc, We just had to return our stand up oil less pump last week after 7 months of use. We ran it according to the instructions and processed about 3 batches per week in a large machine over that time frame. We have never abused or overloaded the machine. The pump just started making more and more noisy cycles which were getting louder as time passed. Then the unit was messaging that there was a vacuum error. We ran the vacuum test procedure and it wouldn't go below the 500 mT max and after two test cycles made it to about 700. Harvest Right did finally get back to us after a couple of weeks of phone and email tag but it will be a full month down without the unit running by the time we get the pump back. After reading your comment, I'm worried this particular stand up pump may be a bigger problem than is being told. Your comment needs to be taken to heart by this channel and maybe a warning should come before he promotes this stand up pump for 6 months leading a lot of other new buyers down the wrong road before his dies. Sounds like you have figured this problem out by trial by fire, and going with the different model/brand might be the better option??? You should post a further breakdown of your experience with this pump and your interaction with Harvest Right and how this all has transpired. I know we would greatly appreciate knowing more.

I’ve had my low profile oilless since Dec 2020 and I am on my 118 th load with no problems at all. I make sure to perform a 30 minute dry flush after each load while my unit is defrosting. ( I unhook the hose from the pump) This is # 3 out of 5 freeze dryers I’ve had. I still have it plus a med and large with the premiere on both of those.

@@kimmididwhat 10k hrs would be running the HD 24/hr/day for over a year (nearly a year and a half) straight. You'd have a bit to go yet before you'd reach the claim Honey Bee made. However, that said, one has to wonder whether the $375 to rebuild the seals would offset the cost of oil in the first place. There are so many factors that these comments just don't take into consideration. I will wait to see what our experience is.

@@4KrystylRose , I’ll report back on it. This is my 2nd unit and 2nd Pump. My first was back in Jan 2016 with the old JB eliminator. I have 2 more with the premiere pumps.

I hate maintenance. The less the better. Oil less for me. Just got it in the mail today.

Yes. Mine sent to me was a horizontal fully enclosed unit. Does not look like a pump.

They have recently released another piles pump that is wider horizontally , and not as tall. I know this because I ordered my second freeze dryer last weekend. I currently have a medium with a standard pump. Ordered a large with the premier pump. There were was two options for an oilers pump. Both were expensive. The oiled pumps are not as bad too deal with as you think.

comment above says it has be SENT BACVK TO CO. EVERY 2-3 yrs for mtnc! deal breaker for me.
