Harvesting Organic Beans from the Container Garden and How to Grow MORE Beans! 🌱👩🏻‍🌾

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I’m harvesting organic beans from the container garden and showing you how to grow MORE beans for harvests late in the summer and into the fall. Beans are especially great gardening for kids, as they grow so fast, go from seed to harvest in about 6 weeks!

In my 34 years of teaching, I've always used beans as a science experiment with my students, but never grown them for myself. Now that I'm retired, I decided to give gardening a try (I'm growing in containers). I have the same sense of wonder my students did watching these seeds germinate and grow. Once they get started it's crazy! Looking forward to my first harvest. My next planting will include spinach along with more beans.

I still have to plant rows of beans in my in ground garden, because even just the two of us go through those like crazy. We eat canned beans as a side during the Winter, but fresh in the Summer, we’ll make a big pot of them, and it takes a lot of beans, so I use a little chicken base, and a little ham base, onion powder, & 3 TBSP Butter, with either a pound of cooked bacon or I’ll use ham, and I cook them in the pressure cooker until really tender, and I love to have this as a meal in the Summer, with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers from the garden as a side.:) I started a 2nd session of Noodle beans in a separate arched bed in late June, but I’m zone 5, so no Fall garden here. I’m going to get some of these pots to plant peppers and some other things that I can’t fit into my garden and raised beds for next Spring. I have so many new things that I want to try, above the old standards that I grow, I’m going to need a lot of these bagged pots..Lol 👍

Kim, I found you a few weeks ago and for the first time since I moved into this house, I feel confident we can garden. Our pool deck covers most of the usable yard and critters eat whatever I plant in the ground. I had no idea fabric pots were a thing! I’ve got your container seeds and late summer seeds going. The squash, cukes, and basil have popped their little heads up! Every day I look for beans, zinnias, and the peppers. They should germinate soon, I planted them a week ago. I think I can plant more plants per container then I originally thought. I was planning on 2 plants per 10 gallon pot, but maybe I can get 4 or 5 in there. Is there a rule of thumb to go by? Thanks! (We don’t live far from you, so seeing what you’re doing in your garden in real time is super helpful!)

We like to cook our fresh green beans from the garden in a wok or skillet. Cook on medium high heat with a splash of avocado oil. Add finely diced garlic, slivered almonds, a touch of salt, pepper, and if you're into it, a little onion powder. Takes about 15 minutes. Add the almonds and garlic about halfway through. Give it a shot.

Wow so if you have room for a few of those 3 ft smart pots you could have a salsa garden in one, about 10 green bean plants in another and maybe a squash or zucchini plant in another with a cucumber vine. That's a decent amount of produce in a very small space!

I agree that beans need a lot of water. I planted bush beans in two different spots, one of which got regular watering and the other not so much. The beans that received regular watering produced twice as many beans as the ones that didn't receive as much water.

I wish I had grown green beans this year, but the only beans I grew were the pole beans, and guess what? I always forget to pick them when they are still small, because they mature sooo fast. And I put them in a corner of the garden, where I do not come regularly. ;-) I HAD to try them the first time this year, because you always proudly showed yours in many videos and I thought I give it try. The blooms really are very beautiful.

The last time I had a plot at the community garden, I grew both bush beans and bush peas. I had to replant the peas, though because the quail go to the seeds. So after i replanted, I covered them up with chicken wire and that trick worked. I didn't get a lot of either the peas or the beans. I'm not sure why, unless it was a weather-related issue. I still got some, though.

Hi Donna, so sorry to hear about the garden challenges. Your plants might not be producing for a few reasons: lack of pollinators, too hot (flowers tend to dry up in temps over 90 -use shade cloth) or not enough water. Hopefully you'll have some to harvest soon! Thanks for watching!

Hi CaliKim I never knew beans would be so easy to grow! I’m looking forward to doing this with my two children. We like to sauté them with diced bacon and garlic! When you were harvesting the beans, did you leave an inch or so of the vine on the plant? Will it grow again on the same spot?

I have a some 4ft coffee bean bags. Would those work as well instead of pots? Edit: I googled it and yes it can be done. Plus I learned they can be used to prevent weed growth and we can Use the string holding the sack together to tie plants to stakes!

Sauté with a little onion and garlic in a little olive oil then add a can or two of petite diced tomatoes a pinch of salt and two pinches of sugar. Simmer until nice and soft and sauce is thickened. Top with fresh basil. So good.

Hi, I have about 10 bush bean plants, but not sure why 2 of them (in the pot) the leaves are getting yellow, a couple of them ( in ground) have beans that are small and color is kind of light yellow. Thanks!

Hi J9 - way to go getting those beans planted, you'll love them! Broccoli and beets are cool weather veggies, they like temps under 75 degrees. If this fits your current weather, go for it. Otherwise you can start cool weather seeds indoors for planting outside in 4-6 weeks. Grab a copy of my book (along with a Fall Garden Seed Collection) for all the details about warm and cool weather veggies, bit.ly/CaliKimFallGardenSeedCollectionBookBundle. It's filled with lots of garden tips and tricks and how to grow the most popular warm and cool weather veggies from seed to harvest and much more. Enjoy your beans and thanks for watching!

  • @CaliKim29

    @CaliKim29

Hi Marie - glad you enjoyed the harvest. The more you harvest your beans the more they'll produce. There are more tiny beans on these plants that will be ready in about a week. Plant more seeds now so when these plants die out, you have a fresh wave coming on. I expect to harvest from these plants for another month or so. Thanks for watching!

Hi Kim. Wondering if you use rain water to water your gardens or if you use city water from your hose? I try to strictly use rain water I gather with my rain barrel, but when we do not get alot of rain, I am forced to use city water. My concern is the chlorine in the city water killing my microbiology in my garden. Do you know of any cost effective means to filter or remove the chlorine from our city water so I can use the hose when I need too? Thanks for your help.

Did you buy neem oil and just add to a water spray bottle? Also if a patio doesn't have a covering for shade, should the pot of beans stay in the sun all day or just rotate it and pull to a shaded area after a certain amount of time? If growing inside house do we simply add water when needed and keep by a sunny area? I've had it sitting in the kitchen table but today because i figured it be better to actually get some fresh air...I took it outside to sit in the sun for a little and was going to bring it back in. I dont feel it will make since to continue bringing it in and out the house but I suppose since the front of the house has a covering I can leave it out there and pull into shade so it doesn't dry out.
