Harvesting Honey from my Flowhive
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A very early honey harvest from my flowhive to capture some of the early pure new zealand manuka honey. Filmed on a dji osmo action.
as you'll see the nectar we get from the trees is mainly Manuka. the bees don't actually prefer it either. it clogs up the beehive.

Love seeing your bees and learning how you take care of them and harvesting the honey 🍯 ❤️ ✨️ hello to Brucie
Ohhhh such a cool system! Thanks so much for showing us! I looove bee's and have as many flowers in my tiny yard here in Ottawa Canada that I can get...dunno if i can get honey like you have, but i would love to try! Love that you have Brucie with you! Love and hugs from Dawn Lynn and Larry !
Very interesting, you have a gorgeous view out there. You are truly blessed 🙏
Well, I had no idea this harvesting system existed (have no experience so why would I?). Anyway it is enlightening to discover that the ancient skill of bee keeping is also subject to innovation. By the way you have a great looking homestead.
Loved this!🐝🐝🐝
Thank you so much. I'm thinking of getting a flow hive and you make it look so easy. Great video!

Watching your video again I have a tip for you. You don't want to open multiple frames at once--probably no more than two at a tip. Also, its best to crack open a third at a time. When you open more than two frame and open them 100%, you get a LOT of honey leakage inside the hive.

Yes I agree, you must also tilt the hive towards the back 2-3 degrees. No hurries when extracting. You should have had more honey than that. Either it leaked out or the frames were not drawn out completely. If you do it right the front of the hive should look normal. When honey leaks all over the brood the bees come out. You should have no honey on the bottom board. I don't think he waited long enough before opening them up to 100%. Thick honey takes long. You should get a half gallon per frame if fully drawn out and capped.
Thank you

Wow! Unbelievable
Is this your only hive? I got my first bees just last week, a bit late for it here in the States, but it was a deal I couldn't pass up. My son has a flow hive he started several months ago and we've yet to harvest any honey.

Interesting video. Do you ever have some of your own honey on your pancakes?
is the flow hive worth the price? i was thinking about getting one

Good question. Depends on what you can afford and whether you have any other equipment already. If you’re a total newbie then it’s totally worth it. There is hardly any maintenance required. Remember though you’ll still need a beekeeper to help you first few years.

When you ask a yes or no question and the answer is "it depends"...get ready for the sales pitch. I own a Lyson 20 frame extractor from Poland. If you're serious about beekeeping get the extractor. If you just want to "have" some bees and get a little honey the flow hive is just for you. The average bee haver loses their bees every year. For new bees call mike...

Wonderful
Each one of those chambers have a different flavor, by mixing them you are mixing all the different flavors. One jar per chamber is the best way to do it.

Can't do that here because of Tutin.

What does Tutin have to do with the honey harvest? Why should all frames be harvested together (or have I misunderstood you? I don’t have a flow hive (yet), nor am I a beekeeper, I’m reading watching & just absorbing as much info as I can before adding bees to my life! Breathtaking view by the way!

You have to blend honey in Marlborough because of the risk of tutin poisoning. Not even allowed to sell honeycomb here. So it's not safe to use just frame by frame. Google it.
Hi! I know this video is a few years ago but was wondering if you are still doing this and if you sell your wax. if so, love to see an update and I would love to buy the wax. I'm a soap and cosmetic maker and always looking to source small businesses and hobbyists.

With the highest respect. In my opinion it was a total failure. Each flow frame must give you 3 kg of honey. You harvested 3 so...around 9 kg to collect. I can guess the mess inside the brood area. That's why they run desperate outside... Next time use the extraction tool in sections (one third at the time) the first third of one frame, then the second and so on. You will get close to three kilograms by frame. Good luck! I recommend to set a langstroth super between the flow and the brood boxes, so they keep honey to overwinter.

Actually it was jammed full of Manuka honey. I had to extract it manually.
Damn your rich af..

Hahaha
You cracked too quick to cause honey overflowing inside the channel into the brood chamber, the bees hang out at the front due to evacuation for a big clean up. Have a slide out the coreflute board to see jow much honey leaking down there! You do loose alot of honey when cracking up too quick between intervals. 3kgs per full frame is an average without leaking. Next time wait 20 mins at each quarter intervals then you will get more honey to the bucket and less chaotic to the brood chamber.

Nope. Not a drop spilt. It's just too thick.

Like burnt toffee. Very strong. Managed a couple more harvests too but eventually the frames needed a hot water clean to get rid of the wax build up.
