How We Harvest Honey (Hive to Bucket) | Beekeeping with Bruce
Ойын-сауық
This year's honey harvest was hard work as always, but it was also a lot of fun. Though the crop was a little smaller than I hoped I am grateful for the honey we got. I am grateful to friends and fellow beekeepers who came from near and far to help with this process. From dealing with angry bees to the fatigue and discomfort of working in a hot honey house the crew hung in there and we got it done. We also had a couple of unexpected turn of events along the way! Instead of producing this content in two separate videos I decided to include the entire process in one.

I know Ozark!! Mike echoed what I’ve been saying. Enough to sustain and trigger the brood, but just not a huge surplus to move it up. They kept it in the nest area. I’ll be pulling tomorrow and same thing, yanking a few deep frames and giving them some drawn from the freezer. Great video again Bruce!! We’ll have to do another ‘meet up’ when things slow down.

Looking good Bruce! How do you like that uncapped? Have you tried the blade type that shaves the comb? If so, how would you rate the two against each other?
@brucesbees
Жыл бұрын
I like it for the speed. We used to use a serrated knife to uncap. I have never really cared much for the hot knife. Would like to upgraded to some sort of automated system but those are very expensive and I am not quite there yet.
I am in the market for an uncapper. I considered one of the roller type that Bruce is using or a flail uncapper. Bruce or any viewer have experience, recommendations as to which is better, the roller or a flail.
@brucesbees
Жыл бұрын
I am guessing the flail is probably better overall. But the Simple Harmony Farms has worked well for us. A chain uncapper is probably the next step in our progression.

@@brucesbees Thanks Bruce, I appreciate your input.
3 questions Just curious, how mant hives do you manage? Did you guys get any robbing during the pull process? Our first pull was pretty stressfull because we didn't expect robbing to start. And lastly, what do you do to get wet supers cleaned up for storage? I know some store them wet, but I chose to set them all out about 700yrds away seperated from the bees. We had lots of fighting, lots of dead bees. Also alot of my new comb got destroyed in the process ☹️
@brucesbees
Жыл бұрын
We had a little robbing but not too bad. I usually set the boxes out for the bees to rob and then stack them with Ice Crystals (Paramoth)
Hi Bruce, have a question why my colonies have a lot of polen but not honey? Single brood management more than 2 frames full with pollen 8 brood and pollen but no honey on second box
@brucesbees
Жыл бұрын
Some flowers don’t produce much nectar but produce mostly honey. And if your bees are building up they have probably been using the nectar to reproduce and also to make wax etc. If there is excess nectar that key will make honey. But honey is good storage for the bees. They typically use as much nectar as they need to keep the hive growing before they store it.
Hey buddy. I don't generally comment on many videos because I watch on TV but I wanted fire up the laptop and drop a quick note.. First let me say you have a nice operation, it's a good process. We had the same issue with the lean harvest here in Georgia. The freeze wiped us out. Next year should be a bonanza. If you don't mind, can I ask what type of lav mic are you using. It seemed to have good quality.
@brucesbees
Жыл бұрын
DJI. Game changer. I did not use it during a lot of the first part of the video simply because it did not work out. But I used it in the honey house as I explained the process. I use it in most of my videos. Absolute game changer. Has an adaptor for juts about any type of phone, camera or computer. I use an iPhone or fill my footage.
@brucesbees

It also comes with 2 mics so it works perfectly for interviews. Wireless receiver plugs directly in phone or camera. No App Also has a sound recording feature for independent sound recording. I think this is the first video I watched and this is where I heard about it. I am a fan for sure. So convenient and effective. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fnt9vNmeac-5n8Y.html

@@brucesbees Thanks for getting back to me. My last lav mic always rustled in my clothes. This looks like it might be a good mic to keep inside the veil.
@brucesbees
Жыл бұрын
Yes I clip it on the collar of my shirt inside the veil. That is close enough to the bees to hear them buzzing but they are not able to actually attack it. The DJI mics are a bit pricey but well worth it for many reasons in my opinion.
Wow you have an awesome setup! May I ask what kind of bees do you use?
@brucesbees

Most of my bees are a combination of genetics. I probably have a little bit of all types. I think my favorites are those with heavy craniolan and/or Caucasian influence. But I am still trying to grow figure it out.
