Harvest Right wiring burned up. What caused this? HarvestRight Home Freeze Dryer. Smoke and smell!

This video is a "show an tell" about what I discovered when a local customer asked me to see if I could fix his old "Knob Style" freeze dryer while he waited for his new freeze dryer to arrive.
His old freeze dryer started taking lots of extra time to dry, and he ordered a new pump. He never tried the new pump because his old setup started to smell like burning plastic. NOT GOOD!
I agreed to look into things. I tested his old pump and his new pump. In the end, I found the issue with his freeze dryer and replaced the damaged parts.
The ultimate issue was related to his old pump drawing WAY too much power! I provided him a relay system that could move pump power from having to go through his freeze dryer so the issue could not come up again.
We have all the parts in stock. If you want something like this, it is not currently on our website, so call and we cam work up your cost.

Outstanding Analysis Bryan...! Truly amazing timing on this video, since 'TODAY' I started the process of fixing the smelly wiring, that has been plaguing me since 2020. I am upgrading the (2 of 6) melted switch jumpers from 14ga to 12ga; an attempt to prevent the insulation from melting off. Two of my heaters are falling off the bottom rack shelves; so I used '3M Super 90 contact adhesive' to reattach them, (no reply or suggestion from HR on this issue) fingers crossed. Love the remote relay system, I will be upgrading that for sure.

I had this happen with my freeze dryer 3 or 4 years ago. The power cord was undersized. It had the right markings for the needed wire gauge, but it would get over 140 degrees f and finally fried the wires at the switch. I replaced the main power cord, and it never got warm again. (Of course I replaced the fried switch, socket and jumper wires.) Edit: Harvest Right sent me the new parts.

Nice job, I have a 110-V relay that would work the same with out the DC adaptor. Another idea i have is a suction filter to stop water and sugar dust getting into the pump. Some vacuum pumps have a glass jar with a paper filter inside, To much money, how about a shop built filter / water separator? with 2 vacuum gauges. Let me know what your thoughts are on that. Why Mtorrs? In/HG is more common, Should a pump hold the vacuum stored in the FD when turned off? mine sucks air through the muffler and in 2 minutes all vacuum is gone. Thanks.

To this day these machines are not UL listed and have serious problems that cause safety concerns. I have been shocked by my machine. The heaters leak current and if you touch the rack while the machine is defrosting you get a mild shock. One day one of these machines is going to take out somebody’s house and that will be the end of the company.

I'd say the ground connection isn't making a good connection if you're getting shocked off it. There should be a grounding wire that connects the rack to the case. The tray heaters should be replaced if current is flowing to the rack from the heaters.

Thanks, Buddy! Is there any taletail stuff to give warning that a pump is pulling too much or do I need to get a Killowatt or something to do some measuring? I just have a dinky multi-metter and am NOT an electricianer but do have a system like this to pull an ozone generator and compressor that are 110 off a 220 feed with a timed relay, an 8-pin I think that just puts in one shopt per pump actuation. I'd use your setup for this if needed. Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless yall!

You can always feel the main power cord on either end. It should never be more than slightly warm to the touch. You can also buy an inexpensive power meter. Most can measure amps in addition to watts and watt/hours. I've seen several under $20.

so, running multiple units off of one pump means at any given time the pump could be working and drying two units simo or even 3 in your setup - so there is enough power to draw down the sufficient mTor on all units? it just may run longer or even around the clock depending on the cycle the unit is in?

Thanks for all the info you give. My Harvest Right, middle of the line, unit has broken down twice within a year. The first time, it was plugged into the wall and they told us to plug it into a surge protector plus other things to get it running. We were able to fix it and get it going again. The second time, it was plugged into the surge protector like they initially said and we were told , "Oh, no, don't plug it into a surge protector ever." We have been working on the 2nd problem for a month now, still not up and running. Have you heard of these problems? Do you know what sort of person, like you, I would talk to about our problem? Harvest Right hasn't been able to give us the correct info to get it up and running yet. We are rewiring the electrical tomorrow and we know nothing about doing things like this so we are flying by the seat of our pants!!! Any help would be appreciated. I would like to say here, that we have loved our Harvest Right even with all thses problems, but we need it fixed.

Harvest Right is a hot mess right now. They tell you on the phone to do what the written documentation tells you not to. They want you to put tape on the pump connection and use a wrench now. They can’t figure out how to make them without vacuum leaks so they just altered their software to allow it to work at 1000 mTorr

@@johnf8877 Ours is still down. My daughter has been getting emails from them on how to fix it. She's gotten it almost there, but it won't complete anything without going down. She's mailed the racks to them so we'll see after that. Now, it's been down almost as long as we've had it up. So frustrating. When it works, it's a fantastic product, but it doesn't work long.

@@EpicenterBryan They sent me a small insert for the hose to my oilless and the oilless seems to have lost some of its vacuum and the cycles started taking longer each batch. When I called they did admit that that small hose was a mistake. But I still need to get the pump fixed. The o ring in the hose that came with the oilless had an o ring fall out and it won't go back in but it is damaged so I don't want it in there. I can't find one the right size and they don't carry that size anymore and keep sending me o rings for the smaller hose. Plus they don't stock the larger hose to my oiless. It looks like there was supposed to be a groove to hold the o ring but it is smooth which may be why it fell out. I am not running it right now since my house is 100% solar power and the days aren't long enough or sunny enough to power the batteries to run the freeze dryer. I can't remember what problem I had this summer but I might have found the answer on you tube. I can't find anyone close who is knowledgeable and can help when I need it. Telephone calls are great but still not the best. I put the original oil pump on and it works but it's messy. Everything I have is from 2017 so not on their site anymore. I am trying to find a place to get parts because I think I can fix things and I have a son close who knows things too. I guess I am frustrated because I paid so much for the machine and the new support techs are trained on the new machines. My sister had one like you show in this video and the tech kept telling her she needed to put in a thumb drive and record info and email it to him and there is no slot for a thumb drive. She was so frustrated she gave the machine away.

@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 They definitely need the grid or grid to charge their batteries when the sun isn't shining. I'm running my freeze drier off my solar and at present only have one of my 4400 watt inverters operating and it's doing fine. But when my batteries get low then the grid takes over and runs everything plus charges my batteries. It also sounds like they need to find a local appliance repairman to fix their freeze drier.
