Harvest Right Vacuum Fix VIDEO

A GREAT fix to your HR Freeze Dryer Vacuum Leaks. We cover a lot of problem areas.
My apologies for the video, it has been a long time since I have made one. The content is great though and the fixes are real. Post your results and comments, the good, the bad and the ugly. THANK YOU!

I want to thank for for this video. We had tried multiple things to fix our $4000 paperweight with no resolve. There were vacuum leaks that even harvest right was zero help in resolving. We just put only the liquid sealer on all the joints you specified and turned on the pump and after about an hour we have finally reached 450 mtor and slowly going lower. We couldn't get the freeze dryer anywhere close to 500 before we followed your video. You sir are awesome!

I have done every single thing you have mentioned to do in a repair for my freeze dryer. In the past when my freeze dryer was working fine. Then There was an issue where I had to send my freeze dryer in for repair. After it was returned to me I couldn’t keep a vacuum every so often, and I would crank my valve as hard as I could shut, and then it would finish the batch. Little by little, it became more and more frequent that I could not keep vacuum. That’s when I ordered a new valve from Harvest Right, installed it and nothing changed. I couldn’t keep a vacuum. My vacuum pump stayed home while it had repairs. I have changed the valve to a gas valve. I have used the liquid tape and the stretchy tape you recommended and used the that you recommended. Also check the door the tray inside the freeze dryer for adequate space. The only thing I haven’t done is adjust the door and I don’t think it’s necessary because it looks like I have a seal around the ring. Does that make any sense?what would you do if you were me.😢 I have a no oil pump . I will do a full freeze dried bread test. Just in case you’re tired of answering these questions.

Thank you for this video! I had to tear down the machine to fix the leaks... The liquid electrical tape worked as advertised! Thank you! Then the Nylog Blue, fantastic! I did have to have a custom vacuum hose/line made, as the one that came with the unit could not get me past 470 mTorr... The new line, with the Nylog, got me to 147 mTorr in less than 20 minutes. Very happy with the results, and Harvest right needs to get their act together! And don't get me started on the sealer, that was unusable until I ordered and installed the proper 5mm heat strips. The transformer in the HR sealer is not very strong, and struggles to seal mylar bags. I went ahead and ordered a new sealer direct from Impak, their 5mm IPK-305H. It will be here next week. Again, thanks, you saved my bacon... Now I need to prepare a bill to send to Harvest Right for the repairs I was forced to make on a brand new unit, manufactured in August of 2023. They should be ashamed of themselves for selling this junk.

First, let me say thank you so much for your video. I had tried a couple of the other fixes for vacuum leaks and was left with my machine not pulling ANY vacuum. I had been using if for serveral months with it only going in the the 500s and 600s, just took a lot longer to finish a batch. I finally decide to do the FIX thing, and like I said, ended up with not even going less than 1000. Well saw your video and did everything you said as you said. I was so excited that it was finally down in the 300s after using the liquid tape. Got ready to put the tray rack back in to run a batch, and decided to do a test to see how low it went with the tray rack back in, to my huge disappointment, it only got down to the 600s! So took the tray rack out, and tried again, it now is in the low 300s after 20 minutes. What the heck??? I made small notches in the gasket where the rack touches, and the cord is up off the bottom of the drum. I really am puzzled. Do you have any idea why having the rack in the drum would prevent the pressure from going below 600? What can I do? So frustrated.

Thank You!!! We purchased our FD machine 16 mo. ago. Mtorr's rarely got below 200 mtorr's, averaging around 210-220 mtorr's. After applying this fix & wrapped foil around the tray holder (wrapping the tray holder was found in another video) . Knowing the tray holder is shielded a little more from the iced tank walls, I also lowered the drying to 120 deg. as often the drying hits up to 131 deg. and I've heard 125 deg is when food starts to cook. Now we average 142-156 mtorr's. Thank you AGAIN! I've been hearing people putting food grade Super Lube grease into the door gasket slot for more sealing power, some mentioning their machine got below 100 mtorr's.

@@stevenducote7466 I went to change out the o rings on the hose and decided to move forward with a mod I thought about just because I had extra hoses and no o rings. So I had two heavy duty hoses one is 7 ft long but supports over 4000 psi. I hooked these hoses up so I can place my pumps behind a wall in my work room. It's so much quieter now. I did have to tighten those JIC fittings way more than I thought but they quit leaking and my large machine is running at 125 m torr and my medium is running at 100 m torr. I'm just glad I didn't have to tear the machines down again. I also understand that some people say the extra hose can decrease pump life, but I think we'll give it a shot. I would think that considering I had the pumps right beside the machine before it may increase the life cycle of the freeze dryer because it's not running as hot.

Steve your a legend, I did just the tape fix as per HR and still couldn't get it below 2000mtorr received my liquid tape but had to take all the other tape off 1st and these older machines are a pain in the butt as you can't get the rear panel off so i slightly unscrewed the T piece so I could add the liquid tape to where the wires are, tightened it back up again then waited about 2hrs before adding the stretchy tape this improved to about 1600mtorr, then i had seen i hadn't done the side fitting where the pump connects to and as soon as I removed the tape the mtorr started going back up again so added the liquid tape and tightened it a bit this dropped the mtorr to 666 (haha im cursed) I then turned the freezer on to see if it would make any difference, came back 30min later and it dropped to 530mtorr but oops with the freezer running it created condensation on the fitting and the liquid tape was starting to run down the fitting so i turned the freezer off but as the liquid tape was moist i was able to work it around over a period of time just with my finger until it stayed where i had pushed it to, it looks so good now like someone had welded it, being moist was a bonus, the mtorr dropped to as low as 230 before settling around 305, and i still haven't added the tape to that fitting yet, that older fitting with the seal in it was always a problem even when it was working so I put a new fitting on, hope it lasts, I haven't seen this machine work for 3 yrs now i am so bloody happy. cheers my friend and many thanks.

Run up to the hardware store and purchase some 3/8 inch breaker rod. They use it to insulate windows and doors, it is that round foam. Pull your seal out around a 1/4 of an inch, and take that foam and wrap it around the barrel cylinder, Just one time around, cut it so the ends meet flush. Push your door seal back into place. After a couple of vacuums, the foam rod will compress and make a nice stop for your gasket. You can also use a spatula to nudge the seal out towards the door to complete the seal. Usually the foam rod will solve this issue.

Awesome tricks!!! I can't thank you enough. Personally, my brain would have never come up with these products for sealing vacuum leaks. I've used 3M rubber tape and Scotchkote doing underground cable splicing for decades, same basic products, I think. I just had my first vacuum related failure after 76 trouble free batches, and I'll absolutely try this trick and rule out the vacuum pump. We have a standard vacuum pump that seemed weak and cheap from the get-go. I improved our pump operation after the first few runs, simply by changing to Dairyland oil. But I think our pump may be failing, leaking back vacuum pressure. In a pump test today, I couldn't get below 650 mTorr and the "demister" was blowing a light, stinky airstream that we've never had. Any ideas where to get a re-vane and re-seal kit for the standard pumps? I may try to rebuild it if the line and fitting sealant doesn't fix our leaks, but we still have to deal with the demister issue. Any discussion regarding tech related stuff is welcome! Have you ever tried a Vevor brand, 10-12 CFM, 1 HP, double vane vacuum pump? I ordered one, so I'll let you know. Thanks Again for Sharing the Knowledge! Dan

My machine Temp gets to maybe -20...the pump kicks on for maybe a minute then kicks off. Machine says needs more freeze time. Does this over and over. In the test mode the pressure won't go below 740 but if I run the freeze test with it it will drop to under 300. Will not take me to the freeze/vacuum mode. I borrowed a friends pump and had same issue so I believe the pump is ok. I checked all the outside connections and the gasket. Everything seems fine. Does this sound familiar and would opening the back and liquid sealing solve this?

Also, you might replace The orings on the end of your vacuum hose (Harvest Right has them, about 2.00 each). Use plenty of the nylox (the bottle with the snake on it) on all the JIC fittings and the orings and the threads too on the vacuum hose. Good luck with everything, let me know if you have questions. Steve, a question for you in regards to holding a vacuum... I am having a brain fart here trying to recall how this works. Ok, I turn on the pump, draw down to 200 mTorr, turn off the pump, is the vacuum supposed to hold, or will the pump allow air back into the chamber? I am using the same pump that you are using, the green one, the machine was built in August of 2023. I was using the HR supplied vacuum line/hose, and when I turned off the pump, the vacuum in the chamber dissipated rather quickly. Is that how this system works? Does the pump have to be running continuously to hold a vacuum? I am trying to remember how this works when I recharge the AC on the car, and it seems to me the pump held the vacuum when turned off with the AC line valves open. Or am I recalling this incorrectly? Thanks.

I'm having trouble with the wire harness fitting location that hopefully someone can direct me. I've re-done the thread tape on both the harness and sensor. I then put the housing under vacuum and once it's below 1k mT I apply the liquid tape good and heavy. The problem I'm having is let's say I apply the liquid at 4PM, I check on it at 9PM and the unit is sitting at 200mT. Perfect, I go to apply the stretch tape but the liquid tape is only skinned over, it's still liquid underneath so the stretch tape squishes it and makes a mess. If I apply the liquid and let it go overnight, the liquid gets sucked into the threads in 2 places where now I have to back fill it to ensure coverage. What's the timing on when you apply the liquid, when do you wrap it with the stretch tape and how 'wet' is acceptable when you do the wrapping? Thanks so much for these details!

Why not disassemble/clean and reassemble the pipe fittings using a NSF rated pipe dope? Matter of fact, for all of my critical plumbing, I commonly reassemble most metal pipe fittings using both Teflon tape and pipe dope. Using exterior tapes and sealants are bound for failure after time and usage. Also, most crimp hoses are best just replaced rather than attempting any type of fix. And quick connects seem to require some sort of lubrication, again, likely use an NSF rated plumbing lubricant.

Soo... I finally got a response from HR tech.. after paying the 45 bucks of course since I bought my machine in April of 22 it was out of the first year warranty... anyway. Long frustrating story shortened.. the tech had me download the new software version and apparently that was all I needed. Apparently they had to fix parameters in the software so that the machine would run properly. Not I am down to 322mtrr.. when before I couldn't get too much below 550.. so hopefully this continues to do the job. I have ran 1 full batch complete and have one in that I added extra time to because I don't want to have to go out to the shed in 18degree weather at 3am.. so it can wait till morning. Then I have another load ready to go after the defrost.. hopefully this will be just a 4 week bump in the road and all will be good now. Phew.. I have no idea how much parts cost if just having a tech call is 45 bucks.. crazy

My Machine is a couple years old, but have only been using it for a bit more than a year. But again with the rack in the chamber BUT NOT PLUGGED in, that one would not get below the mid-500mTorr ranges, and SAME result with the tray rack in and plugged in. It just will not get below 500mTorrs with the tray rack in the chamber, but it does fine without it in the chamber. I am so puzzled. I did more gas leak tests using windex and cannot find a gas leak anywhere. No clue what else to check. Guess I am going to have to pay to have HR look into the issue. So very frustrating. But at least your fix DID my pressure range so it does get down below 500 without the tray rack. Wouldnt do that before the fix.

@@stevenducote7466 I have a 3 month old machine that's already had lcd and electronics board replace, now a water in vacuum pump and 1500 Mtorr probably vacuum leak. Harvest Right wasting my time by "helping me" diagnose the problem. Such a poorly made machine.

I know what you mean. Too bad that the pump manufacturers have to be so secretive about their lubricant design criteria. Are you using parafenic mineral oils or synthetics? Do you have any idea what viscosity oil the Premier pumps need? The most common are #32, #46 and #68, (Dairyland and Cloverleaf available at TSC) are #68 parafinic mineral oils, identical except for the name and have absolutely no detergents, as many folks believe. I think almost all of the common brands are nearly the same oil except for added dyes and intended viscosity. Sadly the pump people want you as a captive oil customer customer, so they claim that their oil is especially designed for their respective pumps. Frustrating! Dan
