Hartmut is a type of character that needs to be written carefully. He's incredibly easy to flanderize and made into a one trait character. The fact that he is more than a devotee makes me happy.

For me the interesting thing is that depite his craziness Hartmut is the only person who really tried to understood Rozemyne. Rozemyne thinking is in constant clash with pretty much everyone. But what others are doing is that they are trying to coerce Rozemyne to their side of thinking. Often saying something in "its common sense". Hartmut is only one who really respect her opinion and is ready to accept it. We can see that in Brunhilda case with commoners. When Rozemyne explain to him how she sees commoners he simply accept it. He doesnt have to personally agree but never once said that her thinking is wrong, he only ask few questions to make things clear for him. Brunhilda on the other hand really pushed the point that nobles should be more trustworthy than commoners to the point that Rozemyne must give her ultimatum. Not even Ferdinand trully understand Rozemyne because of his almost machine thinking. Basically when in comes to this clash of thougts Hartmut is only one who is comming to it with open mind ready to accept her, others must be always persauded. For me this is acually one of the most mind bogling thing in Ehrenfest(and showing why it trully is backwater duchy). Ehrenfest is now absolutelly depended on Rozemyne and she already has more power than aub. But despite this nobody else is thinking "maybe there is something in what she is doing-saying". Nobody is looking at her to study why she is so succesfull and trying to copy at least part of it. They are still sticking to the same old mindset. Hartmut is the only exeption.

I think most of the difference can be broken down into the religious fanaticism. To everyone else they’re operating on noble logic, and while they don’t know the full extent of circumstances that allow Rozemyne to be so successful at what she does (and she isn’t always, so many times she’s almost offended royalty, or almost ruined her own reputation, or almost caused an inter duchy incident) but they are aware that she HAS special circumstances that don’t apply to them, so they just assume they can’t replicate her result. But to Hartmut, Rozemyne is divine, full stop, end of discussion. Religion is not beholden to the restrictions of humanity, it doesn’t really have to be explicated or replicated. He just has to know how it works (because it’s going to work, Rozemyne is his goddess after all) so he can follow her instructions in the way she wants him to and so comes to rely on him. In that sense Hartmut has more faith in Rozemyne than anybody else in the series

I think this assuption is what is really holding down Ehrenfest(and also faction politics). Its duchy without its own specialization. Only reason they are so high its because of their neutrality, which is product of that they are so insignificant that nobody cares about them. And without Rozemyne this would have only continued. Maybe even got worse because of Veronica. Nobles must change their ways if they want out of it.

@@Ibrahim-zd3vv I don’t remember the details, but wasn’t their neutrality because they kind of had skin on both sides of the war and they didn’t want to pick sides. I think they had connections with two different duchies who sided differently in the war and it wasn’t that they didn’t want to pick a side between royals so much as they didn’t want to pick a side between family. I don’t remember where I read that though and it’s definitely been a while, so I could be remembering wrong. Obviously we know they had connections to Ahrensbach and Frenbeltag who were on different sides of the war, so it might be those two duchies.

@@StoryGirl83 That is mostly correct, the old Aub was dying and in no shape to decide on such complicated matter and then Sylvester became an Aub while still really young and couldn't choose between Veronica supporting Ahrensbach and Florentia coming from Frenbeltag. However, I suppose, the part that Ehrenfest didn't really have a big population or a specialty product also led to their neutrality as no one really pushed hard for them to pick a side.

My favorite occurs during the latest translated side story in Part 5 Volume 2. A conversation among nobles has Hartmut pop up. They were trying to discover more information about Rozemyne, but believed Hartmut to be a tactical genius by always sprouting hours worth of praise of her sainthood while giving away little to no useful information. The Rozemyne effect spreads to another.

Hartmut scenes are just too funny! One of my favs is when he just casually adds Roz into the prayer for the orphans 😂… or commissions art from Wilma. Such a character!

I adore that he went from looking down on all the commoners and threatening them for addressing her wrong to now being the one of her retainers the orphans and Wilma trust the most. Talk about a turn around!

I love how much hartmut worships myne as a saint when he first meets her and even more after the events taking place when she first goes to the royal library

Hartmut is sooo enthusiastic. I think one of my favorite scenes with him is when Traugott “quits” and Rozemyne dresses down Hartmut for not giving her the information and letting her decide what to do with it. As her retainer, his job was not to decide what she needed to know, but to tell her everything and let her decide how to use it.

I definitely didn’t think he stopped, but I did like the scene and it did at least somewhat get him to realize that he was doing something wrong even if it only partly changed his behavior. I liked his reaction. He was so sure he did everything right and then she went after him with her scolding and he was not prepared for that.

You're right that it was a good scene. More than that, the fact that she did scold him was so reassuring to me because I was thinking that prior to this, Rozemyne was too meek with him. Hartmut will undoubtly be both very useful to her and also a hindrance if she doesn’t manage him well ! His vow to make her be known as the saiint she is not is evidently especially a concern. The title of the 5th part of the novels indicates that it will probably see my worst fears be proven, though. Let’s hope that Rozemyne can cope with everything and become happy with her life. (I hope my English is correct and you can understand me well although I’m french).

Also adding one of my fav scenes is when Rozemyne is waiting for him like a jealous wife trying to figure out who he's engaged to and how he keeps distracting her from finding out.

We love our dear dear sociopath. He's just a side character, but he's so hilariously and concretely fleshed out that you can write him into any scene you want in your head. This was a great video and a beautiful re-color Seeing as you chose to start off so strong, I must request that the next entry be Hartmut's knightly equivalent, Eckhardt XD

There's no way to know with 100% surety until (and if) it happens, but I believe Hartmut wouldn't be disilusioned by Rosemyne's commoner origins. He did think badly of her at first for being mednoble-born, and all it took was one blessing during her noble baptism to change his opinion into her being a real saint. If he finds out this girl with 'saintly' skills who keeps doing the impossible and dishing out miracles was actually born a commoner? I can only imagine his awe would increase tenfold. By that point she'd just become that world's version of Jesus in his eyes.

Having finished the web novel, I'm not gonna spoil anything but suffice to say, what caught Hartmut's loyalty in the first place is Rozemyne's divine status. That means by default, that trumps everything else in his eyes. And then there's the issue with Ferdinand, who's willing to kill anyone who uncovers Rozemyne's true origins. That's the reason why we will only get to know how much Hartmut knows and for how long near the end of the series. And it will only be possible once Hartmut undergoes an important ritual.

The Cult Leader is really great. I can feel something missing at the academy when he already graduated, made me sad.

Clarrisa is not just schoolar. She is schoolar of the sword which makes her quite capable fighter.

Spoiler ... Hartmut already knows some of her origins, including her being born a commoner, ever since the end of Part 4. The fact that he did not reveal any of this, and agreed to be bound by contract magic comes back in Part 5, is the only reason he is still alive - and there is an untranslated side story from his POV that was included as purchase bonus or P5V6 that shows how this happened - and how he gets some object lessons on the competence of grey priests in the bargain. Unfortunately that story won't be translated until it is bound in some future SSC3...

Love the subtle menace that Hartmut provides as a possible toxic supporter. He is a danger from within because of what he might do "for your sake" but cannot be easily discarded because of his intense loyalty and skills.

Gosh, when you lay it all out like that he sounds a bit unhinged :)

This is a little unorthodox, but: could you do a video on Heidi? Despite how little screen time she gets, she is one of my favourites. She and Josef are what Myne and Lutz could have been, had Myne not ascended.

I love this, hope we get to see an episode on Rihyarda, we know so little about her but she seems like such an interesting character. I would've loved if we had chapters from her youth she seems like she had an interesting life serving all manner of archudcal family members.

Hartmut would definitely become even more devoted if he found out she was a commoner, he would see her rise as a even bigger sign of her sainthood.

I cannot describe my feelings when I read the Clarissa's proposal scene... Mostly along the lines of: 'THat's what a Dunkelfelger proposal looks like?! I thought noble courting was.. y'know, looking at each other intensely or something. Also just, wow. Did not see that coming. Not that I'm complaining-

I want more side stories of him. I'd love to see just what he does behind Rozemynes back all the time. She has some guesses but we don't really know just how far his shenanigans go.

The way he hypes up Rozemyne in the orphanage & even included her in the prayer was hilarious. Also Wilma somehow not understanding Hartmut true personality & just seen him like a saint himself is funny.

I like the series. Hartmut is by far the most cult leader of Rosemyne. He is like Yostoks on being weird ,diffrent in his devotion to Rosemyne.

Hartmut is a great kind of crazy. Whenever some insulting incident happens, minor or major, I wait to see how hartmut explodes.

I really want to see him and Liseleta make a picture book about Rozemyne meeting Shumils for the first time. It would be adorable, could be used as positive propaganda for the Aub, and could be an introductory story for noble children to the cult of the SAINT.

OOOOH. I'm glad somebody made a vid about my favorite male character in Bookworm. My favorite girl is Angelika... The total opposite of Hartmut lol. That said... SPOILER (You have been warned) I already know his reaction upon learning Rozemyne's true identity and suffice to say, he's a real deal fan of the saint rather than her status as a noble. In his eyes, she's the Avatar of Mestianora and agrees fully when Eglantine pointed this out. He's also the only namesworn (which he voluntarily did as an "insurance" based on how Ferdinand reacts when he hinted about Rozemyne's past) to feel any changes in Rozemyne's mana when she was "called by the gods" and during the descent of Mestianora. This also gave him more knowledge about Rozemyne, almost comparable to Ferdinand, which makes him an ideal substitute when Ferdinand wasn't around.

I'd imagine him doing 1 of 2 things should he learn of Myne's ascent to Rozemyne. 1) secret dark cult leader of holy assasins whose goal it is to make sure the holy Saint become aub no matter what, even against her will 2) scorned psychopath that rivals Georgine in persistence.

Why Engaged for now? P5V1 confirmed that Clarissa is not going to cancel the engagement with him over him taking up the High Priest position even against the wishes of her parents if need be. Personally I think at this point Hartmut has become so fanatical about Rozemyne that he'd only become more convinced that she's chosen by the gods if he learned of her commoner roots. Becoming a noble is already something that's pretty much impossible for a commoner in that world and yet Rozemyne not only did that, but also rose to such a high position that even royalty is taking some pretty big steps to deal with her specifically (appointing Eglantine to the royal academy was in large parts done to gather intel on Rozemyne and assigning Hortensia was done to test her loyalty by seeing how willing she is to give up primary mastership over Schwartz and Weiss). But she didn't just rise to fantastic heights herself, but uplifted near everyone around her on her way up, rather than stomping them into the dirt like most nobles would have done to secure their new position.

my GOD how i love him. im as obsessed with him as you are with Ferdie

I can't imagine him being disillusioned if he learns about her past. If anything, I think he'd worship her even more, because rising from commoner to archduke candidate (and not just any, most nobles would like her to be the "primary" archduke candidate) is yet another miracle. But honestly, I'm not fond of Hartmut, he weirds me out. As for what character I'd like to see next: Philine or Damuel.

I doubt he would care about RM being a commoner. Hell, out of all of her retainers the only one I could imagine as giving _less_ of a shit about that would be Angelica and for her it would be a simple case of her brain filing it under "not important for combat, marked for deletion to save space". If anything, finding out that his lady went from the very bottom of the social ladder all the way to the top would probably just add to her legend in his eyes.

I've heard that Hartmut finds out about her past but is completely chill about it. But I don't know if that's true.

One thing I have to point out Emeritus is not a name, it is the fancy academic/formal way of saying former or retired.

Well this should be obvious from me, but I'll put my vote in for an episode about Angelica.

If Hartmut ever learns of rozemyne’s true origins I doubt he would change his tune, he might be disappointed at first but after thinking about it his devotion would grow, cause Rozemyne a true saint born as a poor commoner had to beat the established social norms to rise to her rightful place as an archduke candidate and change the world as a saint

By the way, why is everyone so surprised by Rozemyne's real blessing? Is there a way to fake blessing and why would anyone bother? It seems that making a blessing is easy

It's not the blessing that was amazing but the amount of mana used in said blessing. Most people use a very tiny amount of mana so when rozemyne uses a "tiny" amount it's basically akin to a group of priests expending all their mana at once. It just goes to show how absurd her mana pool is.

Part 4 vol 8 prologue (Melchior's POV) shows just how difficult it was for an small child to even give a blessing back to the priest officiating theor baptism. A child barely has learned how to move their mana at that age, and needs constant practice before their baptism just to perform a normal blessing.

I love the captions lazy gang 🤣🤣🤣🤣 but truth be told, characters in bookworm world are like onions, there are layers then more layers that will surprise you. I'm still neutral to him even at the ending. even though she trust him now as an employee, he is still dangerous. He is not afraid ha, even though he was cornered by 3 archnobles( Ferdi, Justus and Eckhart).

Thank you for the video. I love Hartmunt ! Clarissa and Hartmunt are awesome ! I think even if Hartmunt one day learn about Roz origine and her past life, he will be more convinced of her sainthood. I know I would if I was that devoted to someone. He is awed by Rozemyne, her character. Not her circonstances.

I adore Hartmut because his scenes are always laugh out loud funny. Him and Clarissa are just the perfect couple. He definitely is the most like Ferdinand's followers. Justus divorcing his wife and giving up his children seemed so harsh to me, but i could totally see Hartmut doing the same. It made me very very curious what Eckhart had done that almost caused disaster for Ferdie. Especially since we know that Eckhart and Rozemyne totally agree on the idea of doing whatever it takes to take out an enemy even if it means they go down too. Hartmut has Eckhart's bloodthirsty side, but Justus' manipulative observant side and is as die hard loyal as both of them and Ferdie's house guy too (can't remember his name).

Hartmut means "strong valor" in german. The english word "hardihood" is related.

A pity that we never got a story about him BEFORE he met Rosemyne. Pre-Rosemyne he's often described as being emotionless & completing tasks with a "ho-hum" attitude, I would've liked to have seen that contrast with what he is now in the post-meeting (& serving) Rosemyne era. I'm hoping you do one of Fran &/or Wilma at some point. of the "old skool" side characters I always liked them the most.

This comment has spoilers for p5v1: Considering Roderick, a mednoble of the Veronica faction could find it in himself to be satisfied swearing his name to Rozemyne, despite believing the rumors around her origins, I doubt someone who despised her for her mednoble origins only to become so smitten with her once he saw her perform a blessing, to abandon her if he found out her true origin. As obsessed as he is right now, even if finding out her true origin caused him to have doubts about serving her, and if he did even leave her, I think it'd be unlikely for one of her future escapades (since another incident like her inadvertently illuminating her protective charms, or attaining blessings from 40-some subordinate gods is bound to happen) to not reinvigorate any old feelings he had towards her sainthood.

I keep thinking Roderick is a laynoble, but when I was rereading recently it hit me that Roderick is actually a mednoble. He’s on the low end of that to the point that if things had stayed the course his family would probably have lost their mednoble status in a generation or two, but obviously that won’t happen to him or his descendants. I think I thought that because there are two laynobles in that year and Roderick was one of only two who is shown to have barely passed a subject in their first year, meaning there is a laynoble child who is better at all subjects than he is. Not surprising since during the time Rozemyne was in the juevre Roderick was ostracized along with the other former Veronica faction kids and perhaps more so due to his part in the white tower incident, so it may have been harder for him to get access to learning material other kids from other factions did (although I think the subject he almost failed was one without material from Rozemyne as of yet).

Hartmut would surly have hard time believing her past, but i noticed how at this point in the story - that being part 4 and up. Rosemyne could have her hole OG family speak up and a DNA test to prove them that they are related, and no one would care. She become to valuable in the role she has, to a point were most that know her would do everyting to prevent bad words of her. If her family agenst all sens and logic did speak up, not only is there the magic contract but even with out it they would just be called insane lieers and killed of. So how woul Hartmut react? he would surly deny any romor of it as nothing but evil slander of his lady, so the biger qustion is how you would convince him of it. And sure maybe if you could, then just maybe would he be taken down a notch.... tho its also likely he would move past it. weary likly in fact if he learned how it happened that she ended were she did. Especially! if he learned that she was from another world, at that point he could easily declarer her a miracle of the gods that surpase any status. And well he would not even be wrong at that. Honestly I can relate to Hartmut, I to would suport Rosemyne with all my heart, how can you not! :D
