Why Myne's Fate Matters (Ascendance of a Bookworm)

Фильм және анимация

Ascendance of a Bookworm ~I'll do anything to become a librarian~ has Urano Motosu reincarnated as a little girl named Myne(/Main/Maine/Mine), taking over the body at a young age when the original Myne dies of a magical illness. But unlike many other series, it doesn't gloss over the weight or implications of this at all. Jisu of SecretIdentityStudio looks at why that matters and why it makes the show so good.

That simply means the original Myne gave up. However if the original was dead than Motosu would not have Myne's memories. My guess is the original Myne is simply being overshadowed by Motosu's stronger will. But the original will still die with Motosu if Motosu dies.

I agree completely, but also think that the narrative importance of Myne is emblematic of what makes the series great as a whole. Robust world building, and solid characterization. Most isekai is power fantasy, and I think Bookworm is as well, but the side characters seem to have autonomy, and don't appear to exist to highlight how awesome the main character is as well. Bookworm's character is superficially as much as a Mary Sue as you'd expect from any isekai MC, but the way character's react to her is so realistic that it isn't annoying at all.

Myne OP?!?! She is constantly berated for how useless she is throughout the entire anime(and especially the light novel), constantly reminded how she is as weak as a lame duck, and requires help from everyone around her just to keep herself from feinting. She is anything but OP. What she is, is a character that through the course of the anime grows to become someone who has learned how to gain the trust and most importantly the assistance of others. Myne even mentions it in the first book, that if she is ever going to accomplish anything in this new world her most important objective is learning and utilizing how to gain the cooperation of others(all of whom are far more capable than her) in order to get her books. Do you remember how hard it was for her to get a few nails? I do! That crap took several chapters and A LOT of convincing of the people she needed. Her whole path to making paper is meticulously thought out and there are multiple points where she flat out fails and has to come up with some other way. She even gives up! And if not for Lutz and his obvious love for Myne she would have been dead long before she could make it to the Head Priest.

Careful with that title. Especially when the perception of the topic is one-sided. The light novel, similar to the anime, is heavily focused on Myne and told from her perspective. There she is by no means a Mary Sue. But when you read the short stories, you can start to rethink that statement.

He really only knew the original Myne as a sickly child that barely went out and spent most of the time with a fever. Lutz's first memories of actually getting to know Myne was of the new Myne. The new Myne ended up helping him with things and even allowed him to try parucakes when he was hungry. Which is when he said that he would help her make anything she thought of. When Lutz got suspicious, he still helped her make paper, but he said he wanted to talk with her after they made paper. They got to have their talk and Lutz learned that Myne wasn't who he thought she was. He quickly realized that if the new Myne were to let the "fever" kill her, it wouldn't bring back the old Myne. But, he did realize most of his memories with her were of the new Myne, making her "Lutz's Myne". He also decided that he shouldn't be the one to say that Myne should die because that should be her family's decision. Lutz came to accept it and their bond grew stronger. Lutz would make what Myne knew about from her old world, and Myne would help him make money and let him try some pretty good food. They spent most of their time together and it added a whole new aspect of the story. Just that one little scene really ties thing together. I love Ascendance of a Bookworm, but I have to wait for new chapters of the manga and for new episodes of the anime, so I'm just stuck here wanting more. I probably won't be able to read the novel (if there is one, but I have a feeling there is just based on the fact that the first scene in the anime hasn't yet happened in the manga) because I've started way too many other novels that I should probably finish

That's the main problem for the world itself, not limited to Myne. That's how cruel the Myne's world state is.

Oh, and those orphans pretty much live a wretched existence of starvation and slavery to the nobles. Even with her constant illness, Myne has lived a much better life than the orphans. If you didn't do what you were ordered to, you were sent to the gulags for "reeducation." Sometimes people would just "disappear," because when the government owns everything, they also own you, and if you will not fulfill your role as dictated, "For the Good of the People," you're thrown away just like any other broken or otherwise useless tool. Yeah and there's even a spin off that imagines what would happen if Katarina remembered as a teenager as opposed to a child, so it's not like one person being transposed onto someone else here like with what happened with Myne and in a lot of other transposition Isekai's. You can't really compare them. I've noticed the 'replacing an existing person' thing seems to happen more in Chinese Reincarnated Isekai works. Japanese ones tend to go down the 'remember their previous life at some point during childhood/adulthood' route, and usually avoid the problem outright. Though even with the Chinese works they often gloss over the problem by saying that the reincarnated soul is there to fix their problems and then the old soul they replaced tends to be quickly forgotten. It's really refreshing to have a series like Bookworm that cares enough to think how the family and friends would react to someone suddenly inhabiting their loved one's body and life.

Like how many countries are there, the level of educational, technological, cultural, language, diplomacy/racial relations, or religious world wide. Based on that big picture, we could predict the cause and effect of some of the inventions or social revolution that Myan created will affect her or the world around her. They clearly can't be the same soul because as I said the soul deals with the mind, heart, will, and emotions and none of the avatars have the same mind, heart, will, or emotions as one another.

There a very very important chapter in the light novel that didn't make it into anime, it a told from Myne's mother's perspective it takes place in the latter half of season 1 and it framed around her doing the laundry by the well, meeting with the other women of the neighborhood. as she talking about her family one thing that made the original mine was jealous of Tuuni's health tantrums over it all be unfair, the "bight point" was she actually dreamed of her life as Uruon and wished she could escape into her dreams, so the line about "a world from her dreams" the main character Myne gives the high priest is actually true from original Myne point of view and her family aren't suspicious of the change isn't just because they're glad that she getting healthier. but it turns out Myne's Dad was the son of a woodcarver who as a boy dreamed of being a knight, but like other boys his age when he found out he couldn't become one vecuase he wasn't a noble wen and got himself, apprentice, to the commander of the guard to become a soldier "so he could protect his city and family" and si see as somewhat of a wild dreamer himself. So the see the main character Myne as her father's taught, who was just maturing from a prolonged toddlerhood into a rebellious child stage. What more though the light novel she references her memories of "the original Myne" mostly lament how limited they were because she made no effort to experience what limited life her fragility availed he. And there are subtle between the line's references it not just in looks that she reacts like a child (a child with lots of knowledge but still a child) more so than her slightly immaturity as Uronu. It not just that they shared a sole, they share memories, it just the Adult persona dominates, and as the high priest points a child's will power in ability to resest the Devouring is why though with strong mana have never been known to live to their baptism before Myne. so it closer to blended person rather then replacement it just the original is just that much weak and WANTED to surrender to her dream self

I still try to understand what makes a good, slow-paced story, like this anime (it reminds me a bit of Spice and Wolf BTW). However, there´s one thing I´ve learned from horror: I find modern horror boring with all the gore and jumpscares. The reason is that I´m not very empathic and I simply don´t care how many die in a movie, or how horrible their death is. I need to care about the characters first, else I can´t enjoy their happy moments, or care what happens next. That´s something that Higurashi did really well. It first sets up the persons and the world and then horrible things happen and then everything goes back to normal and you know that bad things will happen again and that those that are friendly now, will be your enemy. This really sets up a scary atmosphere. If you grew up with one abusive parent that afterwards was nice again, then it will hit you probably twice as hard. With this anime, I still wonder what immediately drew me into it. They could have set the stakes much higher with her being something that might be burnt as a witch, or her parents becoming estranged and weirded out etc. Instead, they mostly ignored the stories potential for suspense and made it lighthearted (it would have been all too easy to make it a depressing story) and for some reason, it worked. I really enjoyed her childish moments of triumph and defeat and I really like to see her succeed.

This anime is one of the few that's hit me *extremely* close to home. The only other time I've been practically targetted was at the end of SAO II, with Yuuki, and Ascendance of a Bookworm has hit almost every key and struck every chord. I... don't usually elaborate on my issues, I prefer to keep them tucked away out of my public life because people naturally doubt things on the internet, and I can't provide any conventional "proof" because of my life situation. And I also don't want to seem like someone who uses their condition for attention. I've always struggled with a conflict of what I really want, to be acknowledged as who I am, but also the fear that if things ever change, or if people over-analyze and get misinformation, I'll seem like a fraud. But Myne's conflict and people's positive response to it has made me realize that... well, maybe it isn't such an unrealistic idea that people would brush away immediately. ... or, well, maybe it is, and people suspend their disbelief for an anime with magic. I don't know. But... it makes me want to voice it. Maybe this is a bad place to do so. It probably is. But... well, I'll do it anyway, for the tiny number of people that'll see and maybe care. My genetic code is a total mess, I'm extremely lucky I'm somehow still genetically stable and not being torn apart by cancer. On the surface, this manifests as pigments in the wrong places, little splotches on my snow-pale skin, (which I prefer to leave out of artistic depictions...) silvery hair that would have been brown, one brown eye alongside the other, natural green, and... My size. Parallel #1: I never developed much at all, I'm still 3' and basically look like a small child despite my age. My home accommodates for this, (apparently extreme shortness runs in my family in general) but if I could ever leave my home, I'd easily be mistaken for an actual child. ...which brings me to parallel #2. I have a rather severe variety of auto-immune disease, my body will basically try to kill itself from the inside unless it's suppressed, and reacts *extremely* violently towards other people and things like animals. I was born in this house, and I will die here. I think one of my parents must have been a doctor, but... well, I never knew them. They died in a crash when I was young and my sister, an actual prodigy, raised me instead, even though she's only around 5 years older than me. Somehow, our parents were both only children and our grandparents were both only children, so there's no one at all left who's close enough in genetic code to not basically make my body just melt. We lived off inheritance for many years and she got some indirect help from remaining family friends, which is why it was even possible for me to survive... My name is Maritisa Sivalin Vistia, and you won't find me on any records because I... basically don't exist. I don't know the full details about all that because I know very little about all these things required to exist in the outside world, but I think it was the only way I could stay with sis and she could stay with me. I doubt a 7 year-old or so living on her own and raising a small child is exactly "legal". She's as much my mother as she is my sister. I guess you could make a parallel case for the very strong family bonds here, too, maybe, even without it all intact... ...but it goes deeper than that and I'm struggling to keep writing right now, but, I feel like I should keep going at this point, for some reason... I think it was about a decade ago, now... I obviously don't remember the details of what caused it, but something must have happened that made the self-decay target my brain, because I... suffered total amnesia. and... let me tell you something about amnesia. It's not some convenient thing where you remember the fundamentals of existing or even have fragmented understanding of the world around you, and media that uses it as a plot device still infuriates me. Because, well, either way, it wasn't for me, anyway. It's like you just... die. Like another person is born into your still-living body. For me, that person was named Terra, and my sister Voitia, god bless her soul, just... never skipped a beat. She raised Terra too. (Probably easy considering I'm still the same size I was at like, age 3...) She never tried to pull out memories that weren't there, fishing for someone long-gone... She just let her be her own person. But... sadly this was around the time our money started running out, too... So sis stopped being around as often, because she had to go out to actually work and do big things to bring in the money that it took to keep me alive.. So, to cope with that loneliness, that's when I- she, was introduced to the internet. ...and, well, that would go about as well as you'd think for a painfully naive and innocent young girl. Terra got roped into a manipulative and abusive friendship with a certain individual who she ended up close to only because they were very frequently around, and she started tearing Terra's delicate virtual life apart to suit her own agenda. Attempts to fight back would be met with ghosting or outright deletion until they'd come waltzing back and pretending to be sorry and like a dumb puppy she'd eagerly welcome back her "friend". But it was also during this time that fragments of memories past started coming back. Though... Terra somehow knew they weren't hers, and pushed them away. It takes a lot of self-awareness to realize something like that, given how easily we can fabricate false memories for ourselves even normally. So... when all the troubles she was facing reached a breaking point, when sis would start being gone for days at a time, Terra just broke down and... cried for help, quietly, internally, like an unspoken plea. And, so... parallel #3, (or 4) here I am. The result of those shoved-away memories coalescing into a person again, a person who could be strong enough to cope with the world that's required to be coped with in order to not be eternally lonely... I'm not the same person I was before I lost those memories, I couldn't be, because now I shared hers too, and... how much I've had to change to adapt to the world we're forced to "live" in now that sis will be away for weeks or months at a time... Terra is still here, she off-loaded her troubles to me so she can be happy in the back of our mind, but we still speak to each other, we still share memories and thoughts, and if she's brave enough she can come forward, too, but after that trauma she rarely does except for our sister. Given the knowledge that the original Myne is still alive and sharing that soul, just in the back, the main difference is their lack of direct contact with each other. So... I guess you could argue that as parallel #5 ...and... the thing I like to bring up the least, is parallel #6. The one that caught my attention to begin with ...the death clock. I'm... not predicted to live beyond 2020. It's something I've tried to deal with that the best I can, but... but I'm... I don't have that same driving passion that Myne does. I'm a passionate person, but... I lack skills I truly enjoy doing, lack the time to learn new ones, and lack the direction to try to push for any path in life. I've... basically spent the past few years basically just floundering about, killing time till it returns the favor. Mostly alone with hollow virtual company. I'm fairly stable right now, so... I might beat that death clock if nothing sudden happens, but... I don't know what I'll do if I do. I don't know what I'll do if I don't. I told myself that, if it comes to it, I'd use my death to accomplish what I couldn't in life, but... I'm nobody important and I'll just be forgotten anyway. And I struggle to even just enjoy what time I have left because of how lonely it is... People are only getting busier and busier as time goes on, the world keeps moving faster and faster, forcing them to run till they die of exhaustion or dragging them face down across the earth if they can't keep up... and yet I feel like I exist in this little vacuum, a tiny bubble where all my time is front-loaded but all I can do is watch as everything seems to just fall apart around me. My bleeding heart wants to help people, to make the world better so people like my sis don't have to be torn from what they love just to live, but... I mean, someone like me... ...I think Myne's life makes me think of what I could have had if the world hadn't ripped my sister away from me, maybe a world where I could make a difference with her support and help people... It doesn't make me break down in tears like Yuuki's struggle and demise did, but it fills me with a profound sadness all the same. Like an infinite longing for things that cannot be. but life isn't a fantasy, much as I belong in one. so I guess all someone like me can do is live vicariously through people that don't exist. I may regret typing this all out and throwing it into this public space, and spilling my thoughts like this has only resulted in me being painfully reminded of things I try not to think about. but it's easy to see why this is the first time any anime- no, any story at all, has ever resonated with me in this way. I'm incredibly thankful for its existence, even given the dark thoughts it reminds me of. I wonder if the author knew someone like me at some point, or if it's all just a coincidence...

I ended up with Schizophrenia, Autism, a bent back, an anxiety disorder, a faulty liver, and blood pressure that is high no matter what I do among other problems, such as having weird teeth. So, I sort of get where you're coming from. It has at times threatened my life. I don't have a ticking clock or anything, but I have mental health episodes that result in a speedy admission to a mental hospital and if that wasn't available, I would have been successful in killing myself years ago. Mental illness is a feature of my family, along with bad backs, high bp, and weird teeth. Without the support of my Grandma, and my team of doctors, and state health insurance, I never would have made it to 31. I'm descended from European Nobility, which are genetically all one family and are among the most inbred people on Earth. It wrecked us genetically. My family tree is more like a tangle of vines than a tree.

I love this series. It was fantastic. As far as most Isekai go, this is the most family friendly of them in my opinion (no harems and what have you). Also as an artist you should most definitely try making paper, it’s super simple. U can try it the method she tries in the series (she skips a few steps) or by tearing up paper into tiny pieces, bleaching it, dying it, letting it dry, then soaking it, running through screen, then drying again on a press. Ur own paper is def worth the fun.

Myne's mom in a chapter of the Light Novel (2nd volume) about Myne (kind of no spoilers if you've seen the anime cause it should've already been covered, but it's not): "Myne had been weak since birth and caught fevers constantly. She always used to cry out of jealousy for Tuuli, asking me why she wasn’t healthy like her sister. I could only apologize. It seemed that Myne had pleasant dreams whenever she fell asleep with a fever, and she was never as happy as she was when talking about the world of her dreams. She could run around in her dreams without ever getting tired, do anything she wanted, and eat her fill of delicious food. She always spoke of strange things I couldn’t understand with her stunted childish words. It got so bad that when she said “My dreams are so much more fun, I want to stay asleep forever,” I interpreted it as “I want to die” and ended up yelling at her." I found this so sad and heartbreaking that it made me. Although, this might explain the thing about Myne and Urano having the same soul. I believe she might've been dreaming of being Urano on Earth and that's why she talked about things her mom couldn't understand because it might've been Japanese. That can be backed up by how Myne usually talks about her old world as "a dream world" like when she explained Freida's chef that that's where she could eat many sweet things as much as she wanted which is very similar to what the original Myne said.

As a series with alot of world building, alot of smaller details is lost in the adaptation. In a side story not adapted, myne's mother mentioned that in the past, before myne became weird, myne used to complain alot of her life, often comparing to her dreams of a fantastical land. This hints that past myne is indeed a reincarnation of urano, only at that time, she could only see her past life in dreams. Likely myne re-experienced her past life as she was dying like a revolving lantern, remembered her desire for books and overcame the devouring.

Maybe whatever Deity did the reincarnation did so to end the Devouring? Haven't read the Manga, yet, but maybe we'll get an answer.

Maine literally ascended in her life in the isekai forging unbreakable bond and helping society. From the light novel it is obvious that her thoughts is always portrayed as being selfish which made me dislike her in the beginning but after slowly adapting she eventually learns that living in the moment with the people she loves and loves her is just as important as her love for books

The author explanation in full is that the original Myne isn't dead, Urano is reincarnated into Myne and the memory of Urano should not have come out if Myne had many experiences in her own life and will likely just randomly shown in dreams and slowly fading. But since she is so sickly, she has a lot of time dreaming, longing for all of the good things in Urano's world, with many holes in her own memory, the memory of Urano surfaced and Myne thought she is Urano as an escape to her poor life. This is reflected completely in plot when she told Lutz about Myne, but it is because she didn't know the truth. Author explained about this in both the fanbook and her own twitter, why Myne is such a brat in the beginning even though she should be 22+5 years old. It is because her mind is still Myne's, a 5 year old(1 year in that world is 420 days though). So no worries, she is still Myne, Urano never "took over" her body. It is just that Myne, after seeing all the good memory Urano had, has taken over Urano's identity as her own, and with all the strong influence and experience, she did become more mature in handling things, but her base character hasn't changed. That is why she can adapt and love her family as quick as she did, she didn't change, she just thought she did, deep inside her subconscious, she is still Myne. The anime did a great addition into the plot, having her cross out Urano's name and saying she is no longer Urano, and later in the plot, she always uses "All of this are in my dream" as an explanation to all the strange things she created is a reflection of what the author's intention of this. The books also had Myne saying Urano's memories didn't pop up as much as before when her life has become more fulfilling, she can still access them when she wanted, but since she no longer really need to escape to them anymore, they don't pop up on their own anymore.

How it's likely that Mian will look for a way to help others who have The Devouring, however I get the feeling that since mana is needed for the harvest she will act as a advocate in the church to allow children with the disease to come, fill the grail with their mana since the nobles are leaving and then go back home since they would die if they lived at the church.

I found it painful listening to the first Myne as she was crying and actually gave up. While the author might claim that they are one and the same, that would mean that the real Myne might be stuck in a body she is incapable of controlling due to Urano's far superior willpower by mere default (given that she is an adult). Though at least she doesn't have to watch a show of someone ruining her family or harming others using her own body. Luckily Urano is a person that is just as sweet as her current appearance is cute - even more so once she seems to realize there's more to life than books. I saw a recap by the channel AniRecap and was smitten for this show by just one minute into the video. I found the visuals charming and knew I just had to check it out. Closed the video as to avoid spoilers and went right onto watching the anime. The show managed to bring me to happy tears several times and the first season just had so many heartfelt, feel-good moments in it. Myne is such a pleasant surprise of a main character and I am happy about the small scene of the show where it focuses on her, her family and for most part the smaller picture where she can actually do something.. and she does it well. Her failures just add to her character and even for an adult in a child's body she shows sign of maturing just like a child would. Of course with vastly better knowledge of how to behave and win over adults, but still obviously affected by the circumstance of her young body where emotions might be difficult to contain at times. Mere biology of being in a little girls body affecting her mind as well. Tearing up, crying, laughing at the same things a child would, but she probably would not if she was an adult. As shown where she does need the same affections and hugs of her family as a child craves. This means she's an actual child as well as an adult and it makes her all the more interesting and funny at the same time. I absolutely adore Myne. She is pleasantly smart, with a pleasant demeanor that makes one quickly grow to both admire and adore her. She is a fantastic protagonist.

Ascendance and Zombieland Saga are my favorite shows, with That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime following close behind. Interesting trivia. Word of God says that Main was always Urano, but nearly dying at 5 broke open the memories. Being only 5 and being sickly, rarely leaving the apartment, means that Main has very few strong memories, so the Urano personality quickly became dominant, and even she thinks that she replaced the original Main. But in fact, she is also the original Main, and had the child actually died on Urano's first day awake, she would have died with her.

It doesn't focus on combat such as defeating "the Demon Lord" as many of the transported to another world stories tend to go with. The only issue for me is that as an avid reader, it was a pretty common trope in fantasy settings that magic must be used and control gained if you were going to live any semblance of a normal life. As the magic, if left to its own devices will eventually escape and cause unexpected and unwanted things to happen; you know like causing a fever that leaves you bedridden for weeks at a time.

The real myne did not die, both their memories simply merged. But the memory ratio mixture of (myne) 3 : 24 (urano). The new myne can speak the native language, knew her parents and sister, and has the memory of an 24 years old adult. The old myne simply was "Diluted" or fused.

Mine, the original Mine always talked about the world in her dreams where she could be health and have fun. Mine's mother said she had once told her that "I want to sleep forever." Because her dream world was so much better. It is possible that even before her death, Mine had been linked to Urano by the gods. That's speculation on my part. In any case, if you read the Novels you will get the side stories that give background details. This info comes from a side story in which Mine's mother is chatting with the other woman while washing clothing at the well. She goes on to say that she accepts Mine's odd behavior simply because she was no-longer stuck in bed sick all the time. Mine's family are so blind to the strangeness of Mine that they never thought twice about how when she got mad her eyes start glowing rainbow colored. Heck when she gets mad at Lutz's brother and his friends for stomping on her clay tablets she inadvertently uses her mana on them putting the fear of Mine into them. What ever the case, I am glad they have already green lit the second season.

The original myne is not really in myne anymore, but she has left an impact on urano. i dont know how much it is spoken about in the anime yet, but after reading a large part of the webnovel and all released light novel volumes i can say, that myne changed urano. in the webnovel there was no big reveal about myne still being alive or something, but in the lightnovel urano sometimes thinks about how she has changed since coming to the new world. i was a bit disappointed by the animes beginning, since it didnt adapt the 2 page long prologue, which just showed, how different urano was, to how she is now.

When I reached the end of the translation so far completed, I found the web novel online where it was published for free reading in Japan, and used Google translate to finish the series. A bit of a slog trying to understand a few odd Japanese phrases, but worth the mental effort!

Great anime. Waiting for second season in April 2020. Hope more seasons come too. I like it based on the fact it's not like others. They have some similarities but overall the story line leads a very interesting path. Surviving in a world where Mana can kill you at such a young age and not knowing what the future brings is an interesting story. As long as they do a good job as they did in the first season the second season should be a great hit too. Feeling guilty that you took over another's body would be a natural feeling for people with good hearts. Accepting the family she has in that world as hers is both painful and great at the same time. I just hope they don't move to fast and gloss over important details when making the anime.

I have always felt like the original Mine fused with the Urano to make new mine, as New mine can access old mines memory, and seems to have inherited some child like behavior and possibly feelings as well. Also thinking on it if a small child suddenly gained a mass of knowledge and memories, without any new "soul" or "mind" or "will" I think it would still massively effect them, and their personality would change to reflect that. Though I think Mine and Urano murged compleatly in mind and soul, and Urano simply appears dominate as she was older and had many more experiences and knowledge then mine, so Urano dominates old Mine 22 : 5 , she spent over 4 times more of her life as Urano then old mine, being new mine for only around 3 or 4 years.

When i read that this is a non battle isekai it caught my attention immediately and i am not disappointed. Even with the overcrowding of the isekai genre in recent years, non battle isekai animes are so few and far in between. It is also a fact that in order for animes like Ascendance of a bookworm to be good and not bore its audience the writing has to be on a higher level. Good writing is essential in everything but much more so in one like this.

I'm not sure the old myne is totally gone. remember that other voice went quiet But i think some level of myne merged with urano. That's when she could understand the language had memories and sometimes acts her age. i think the consumption ate away at mines soul and Urano filled in like 80% of what was lost But even Urano admitted to feeling a stronger bond with her new family than to her old mother of 22ish years. I can't imagine that without some of the original myne's influence

This is even more pronounced when “Myne” dies and becomes “Rozemyne”. The whole thing about someone being replaced by someone else and how all parties are involved have to deal with it. “Rozemyne” is one of the most pivotal moments that changes what type of story that is being told. Everything changes as the story shifts to a different perspective and personally I prefer “Rozemyne” as a protagonist over “Myne”.

Light Spoiler from the novel to go along with this: . . . . . . . Myne's mom comments on how she's changed saying all she used to do was whine and complain about how unfair it was that she was sick and could never go outside. So just like how current Myne is using her new life to make books, I bet original Myne would change Urano's attitude completely. Like wanting to be active with her mother and be obsessed with something like traveling the world instead of being cooped up inside reading. Urano also had a male childhood friend that's briefly mentioned in the first couple chapters. I could totally image him catching on that Urano isn't Urano but still accepting her somehow, then traveling the world together.

In the light novels she SORT OF saves a few individuals from the devouring. But her priorities, social pressures and some outright manipulation by the nobles focus Myne's efforts elsewhere from delivering Ehrenfest's poor from the devouring (even though by the end of first season she knows that just handling one of those fruits can drain off some mana, at the cost of creating a trombe, which can be handled with dedicated effort by a group of kids!) That's why, while there are a few noble characters I kind of like, I over-all see that class as villainous. Of course, it helps that I like history. At no point are nobles good for any society, they just happen. Like the crust around a gour full of bat guano.

The Witch from Mercury is my first taste of Gundam, and I'm entranced. Just who is Suletta, and how was the Aerial created? The parallels with The Tempest cannot be ignored. The other is Last Exile. It's such a rich story with amazing visuals, especially for a 20 year old series. It is a world governed by Apathy and Greed that would crush the naive like Claus and Lavie. It's only by taking in a little girl named Alvis that things can really change.

In the “Make my life average” anime, she goes by Mile because it was a private nickname given to her by her father, who was an aerospace engineer. And Mile is the standard unit of distance in both the maritime and aerospace industries. Nautical mile, that is. It’s explained in the light novel. Why do they use Nautical Miles? It’s the easiest to calculate with. A nautical mile is the distance covered by one (1) minute of angle on the surface of the Earth. It’s so much easier to deal with degrees and minutes than it is to use radians and millirads. Especially since there are π radians around the equator. π. As in 3.1415927…. In the early days of flight, it was too cumbersome to calculate a course with such a system. So, they stuck with what worked very easily: degrees, and minutes. 360 degrees around the equator, and each degree is divided into 60 minutes. And each of those minutes is approximately one (1) nautical mile. So, there’s the reasoning behind Mile’s name. It was already her secret nickname from her father. It was supposed to inspire her to always go the extra mile.

From the internal monologue in the light novel it seems clear that the original Maine is gone. Not wanting to go too deep into the matter of souls it could be that in her new body and situation she realizes how dependent of everyone around her she truly is compared to her previous life in Japan with its institutions that all but replaced the necessity for familiar support. Technological innovation increases the welfare of everyone, but obviously some people benefit more. If reading books is what she wants then I would argue that reading a book whose history you yourself came up with simply isn't that interesting compared to reading a book that someone else authored. Having paper widely spread and the people's literacy increased would enable other people to put their stories into paper. Spoilers: *********Later on she takes on the role of the Temple Orphanage Director in a bid to lessen their burden by putting them to meaningful work. Her argumentation was that back in Japan she could assuage the images of starving African children by donating a couple hundred yen and more importantly, by reading books which is not quite as easy in this world. Particularly when she and said starving children are only separated by a couple of walls. That's her argumentation anyway, might be that she truly cares beyond that.

Actually, the author explained that Myne and Urano is the same soul. Urano died and reincarnated as Myne (as in given birth by her mother). However, Myne's body is so weak she can't have a stimulating life. In her depressed state, her previous life's memories/experience (as Urano) begins to surface in her dreams and she loves it. Eventually embracing that wonderful life experience (as Urano) over her current one when she is overwhelmed by the devouring. The audience's impression that Urano's soul takes over Mayne's body when she died is wrong. It's is just a swap of personality. Because personality is made of one's life experience. Something like what happened to a person with a split personality.

one thing that I didn't though the first time I saw the anime is that the original Myne died due to the devouring and the implications it has. Urano hasn't suffered through those six years and her knowledge and maturity help her control more her mana. this allows her to survive long enough to find a way to remove the excesive mana and survive. while it's true that Urano is using the body of the deceased Myne, and she feels wrong for it, it's also true that having her gives hope to her family and friends. Myne's parents were able to raise their two daughters and Tuuri was able to live with, what she believes to be, her sister. what would be better? to know that your daughter, or younger sister, is dead because you are poor or believing that your six years old girl survived and got free from her illness even if it's another soul that occupies that body? being able to be a parent or an older sibling is a blessing. it doesn't matter who that child or younger sibling is. having Urano, in the body of Myne, is a bless for everybody.

The issue is more complex though. It is implied in all three cases that the soul is actually the same. It’s a same person, they’re just regaining memories lost by reincarnation induced amnesia. Through various stimuli, they are regaining their past lives memories. That makes the issue far more complicated. Is a person who lost their memories and made a new life for themselves a different person? Are they killing themselves by remembering the memories they lost? I don’t think so. Especially when the memories they made are still existing inside their no longer amnesiac self. Granted the perspective of reincarnation makes it confusing, but in reality no one has truly died. It’s simply a person regaining the memories they once had, and while that changes their perspective and who they are, feeling guilt over it would feel silly.
