Harsha Bhogle: The rise of cricket, the rise of India

www.ted.com The tale of a major global cultural phenomenon: Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle describes the spectacular arrival of fast-paced 20-20 cricket as it parallels the rise of modern India. @@aniksamiurrahman6365 that's really sad. Seriously what's the difference between champions trophy and world cup now. 14-16 nations playing was the real essence. Anyways it wasn't technically unfair, a tournament was organised, other teams were given a chance but Afghanistan was the one which made it into world cup. Anyways, video is more about how India used certain opportunities, and benefits it's reaping because of cricket obsession. I really wish cricket was actually encouraged more in nations like Zimbabwe, Ireland etc which have potential just like Bangladesh.

This man summed up cricket so well! For someone like me who grew up in the US, I never thought I would be able to go back to my roots and love cricket BUT then T20 happened and then I have become a fan ever since. IPL which is now worth over $6Billion dollars is just an example of how global this game could be given the right support! Hopefully, the US one day will welcome this beautiful game and we will have our Yankees and Red Sox but this time in cricket and not baseball.

hogn hooper you are right. But Sachin isn’t the only reason for cricket to be so famous in India. It was the globalisation of India in 1992. Before that BCCI use to pay tv channels to show cricket matches & look now ; Sony bought Indian cricket rights of 5 years at around a billion dollars. And at the same time mere $300M for England cricket rights “. IPL rights sold at $2.1B . Sachin may have played his part in making cricket a worshipped sport but he wasn’t the only important aspect.

Today hockey World Cup is being played in India, I can say 90 percent of India may be unaware. Why people from India Pakistan, Srilanka, Bangladesh etc have made cricket it's religion? British taught soccer, hockey and cricket. India adopted cricket its passion. Simple reason is it's a game of convenience. It requires skill and little fitness and stamina. In cricket if you cannot bowl fast like Brett Lee become Ashwin and Bhaji. Even Inzamam ul Haq types can become world champs scoring tons. Running between the wickets you run in your own timing, in Fielding you chase the ball in your own timing. In batting ball comes to you. There is never toe to toe neck to neck competition. Whereas in games like soccer, basketball, track and field etc you require enormous amount of speed, stamina and fitness. Opponent stretches you in all these parameters. To beat Maradona you have to beat him not only in skill but also in terms of speed, stamina and fitness. So is with Bolt, Micheal Jordon, Micheal Phleps, Nadal and Federer etc. It's an attitude. IF MONEY AND INFRASTRUCTURE ARE THE ONLY REQUIREMENT THAN PEOPLE FROM INDIA, PAKISTAN, SRILANKA AND BANGLADESH ETC SETTLED IN US, ENGLAND AND EUROPE would have played soccer and other games which are popular there. Who cares for cricket there? But there also they play cricket only. Today football and hockey are played only in villages, our youth are keeping the flag High in tough games soccer, hockey track field in Olympics. Cricket is played in cities and towns. Even England prides in English premier league EPL not cricket, India made IPL in cricket. Media sells what people like. India cannot produce heros in other games which require speed, stamina and fitness, try to find heros in cricket. You talk of Micheal Jordon, they will bring Tendulkar and Kohli, you talk of Micheal Phelps they will bring Tendulkar and Kohli, you talk of Bolt they will bring Tendulkar and Kohli, you talk of Nadal and Federer etc they will bring Tendulkar and Kohli. Recently during FIFA WC media brought a weird comparison between Messi and Tendulkar about their height, popularity , age, achievements etc. But one should know Messi is Messi because of his magical footballing skills which is engined by his mercurial lighting speed and incredible stamina and fitness. Indian cricketers cannot be compared to even state level footballers in terms of speed, stamina and fitness. India Pakistan, Srilanka Bangladesh etc are zero in other games can never be a sporting nation. Japan and Korea may be geographically Asian, but they have the attitude to compete with the best in the world be it technology economy and sports. Today they compete with top footballing nations and Europe in soccer. Make their presence felt.

2007: "in the air! Sreesanth takes it. India win! 2011: "Dhoni finishes it off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd. India lift the world cup after 28 years!" Isn't this man better off sticking with commentary and not coaching?

The concept of city based rivalries is not foreign to India. Mumbaikars and Punekars have been making fun of each other for years. And as someone from Mumbai, I was already fiercely proud of Mumbai cricket. There is no bigger institution in Indian cricket than Mumbai's maidans.
