Harry Potter Theory: Was Professor Quirrell a Horcrux?

Today Ben discusses the complex ins and outs of Horcruxes, what it takes to be one. And how maybe even you.... could be a horcrux.
Well maybe not that last bit. But we will answer the question as to whether or not Professor Quirrell was a Horcrux.

But Dumbledore does theorize that Voldemort intended to use the diary as a weapon. Therefore it seemed that it was his intention for the diary to be used to open the chamber of secrets, though obviously not in the way that it happened. So he does intend to use the diary to let loose the basilisk, which still is a pretty dumb decision given how all but 2 of the horcruxes were killed with basilisk venom.

I suppose you could look at Voldemort like a Lich, with a few differences. A Lich generally has a phylactery, which he or she uses to reform their physical body upon death, making them virtually immortal. Voldemort has 7 phylacteries as opposed to one. Upon dying to Harry his body died but his soul lived on, perhaps generating more and more power by possessing and draining smaller lifeforms until he had enough power to generate a new body near the horcrux he was closest to, which would be Nagini. This new body is the baby-like creature we see at the end of Goblet. This is why I think Quirrell wasn't a horcrux, but simply a vessel Voldemort could drain a significant amount of energy from for his eventual return.

because splitting your soul from one whole (even if its broken) into two different entities needs a tremendous amount of effort, but Voldemorts soul at the point of attacking Harry was already sooo fragile and broken, that it ended up splitting by itself, without any extra efford needed anymore. It clearly says so in the books.. just not sure where :)

ZiggyTheWastelander Dunmer Master Race well one, Harry blacked out before the moment of death, so he didn't witness the actual moment that the sole left the body for the afterlife. Two, I think that even if he had witnessed his death, it wouldn't count because Prof. Querrel had Voldemort's soul leeching his own, and it was slowly destroying his sole. His sole was so destroyed by the time that Harry killed him that it couldn't leave the body in the normal way, so it wasn't really a death in the sense that one thinks of death. It's kinda like if you put a square peg in a square hole, and it gets messed up inside the hole so that it doesn't fit to pull it back out. Sorry if that sounded a little (or a lot) confusing

Aaron Bolton Maybe the horocrux inside Harry was protecting him along with Lilys sacrifice? That's why Voldemort himself has to kill Harry on the seventh book, cause besides the venom or the fire Goyle summons, the very creator of the horocrux can destroy that piece of his soul. And Lily's sacrifice is also part of the reason why Voldemort couldn't kill baby Harry, and why Quirrell couldn't touch him. Maybe the combination of the two protected him; or maybe Harry was able to kill Quirrell cause he was also a Horcrux

im remembering that voldemort was planning on making his final horcrux with the murder of harry (a significant death, killing the chosen one) so it is plausable that part of horcrux creation is preparing the FULL seperation of a soul from the body (otherwise accidental horcrux's would be a lot more common) so i always assumed that voldy did horcrux spell part one before killing harry, and assumably once harry was dead he would direct the soul segment to the vessel of choice. BUT he did not kill harry and "died" himself, leaving his soul peice from the horcrux creation floating in the room, at which point we know the rest, the soul default withut direction went to the only living thing around, harry

@adriacstarks GREAT queston, and there is no evidence on anything, though i do have an option. i would assume it was something on voldys person or on the potter household. due to a lack i would guess something belonging to godric gryfindor a prefect option is, in fact, the sword of griffindor. how he got it is questionable, but he could steal it and it is beleiable that if it was not in the posession of the potters, which is an option, being in godrics birthplace, godrics hollow, is another fine guess. or maybe voldy stole it the sword would not only give him an object from all 4 founders, but it is also near indestructable and gets stronger with time (see absorbing the basilisk venom to strengthen itself). and also may be why it is not still there, assumable when found would have been removed and if it was not, than it would have teleported to harry. ALSO, the sword would be perfect. a horcrux can corrupt the holder, and the sword presens itself to true griffindors, so voldy can then corrupt the best people

Huh, interesting. I always imagined the Horcrux system more like... So, when most wizards die, their souls just go onto the 'beyond' or wherever book 7's train goes. But if it's been split, the attraction to the other pieces is stronger than the repulsion from the world a bodiless/vesselless soul would experience. So the consciousness attached to the piece of soul that left your former body snaps to and combines with the piece in one of the horcruxes, and the horcrux is your new 'body'. So with sufficient mind-magic (like legilimancy) you can influence or possess people from your new base of ominous operations.

You just put to words how I imagined it would work. Of course, the movies would show it differently, because from the perspective of that soul fragment it would be instant hence the 'snaps to and combines with...'Unless Voldemort just breaks the rules. What's the difference in perspective between normal possession and the travel of a soul from horcrux to horcrux? Because apparently Voldy can do both.

Troller Loller It's not exactly a person by that stage. Remember the quote 'I was less than a spirit, less than the meanest ghost...but still I was alive.'? I think at that point it is less to do with choosing to go into a piece of jellewry and more of being so desperate to remain alive that they are prepared to sacrifice everything not limited to body and movement.

brothers, you've screwed up one very basic rule regarding horcruxes- the destruction of the horcrux's physical container MUST destroy the soul shard. The soul shard does not linger on. That's the whole point of the horcrux hunt in DH. Quirrel was possessed by Voldemort's disembodied spirit, yes, but it wasn't the same thing. When Quirrel died - aka the container was destroyed - it did no damage whatsoever to Voldemort. In fact, Voldemort ABANDONED Quirrel before he died, something a horcrux CANNOT, ABSOLUTELY 100 PERCENT CANNOT NEVER EVER, do. Voldemort didn't absorb Quirrel's life force like Tom Riddle tried to do to Ginny, so it's really not the same as in CoS, especially because Tom Riddle was still bound to the diary. Voldemort was never bound to Quirrel's body. so, no, Quirrel was never a horcrux. Voldemort was known to be able to possess people, and he wasn't the only wizard to do it. Possession is not the same as being a horcrux. Please get your potter facts straight.

I've been wondering.. To make a horcrux, you split your soul in two. So when you create a second one, I assume that you split the remaining half? And so forth until, with harry for example, did he just carry around like 0,78% Voldemort soul? The way that JK rowling described it, then yes. Would that really influence harry all that much? Would, for example, less than 1% voldemort be enough to inherit parseltongue? And Voldemort also contains just 0,78% of his own soul. Seems a bit weird that a small ring contains more voldemort than the dark lord himself...

If Harry was a pseudo-horcrux, and as such doesn't protect itself when threatened, why was it that the golden flames were produced outside of Harry's will to protect himself? The explanation given for that was the piece of Voldemort's soul was doing what a typical horcrux does.

Harry becomes an unintentional horcrux when Voldemort attacks him, but doesn't get taken over like Quirrel or controlled. Even V doesn't realize where the connection to Harry comes from at 1st, then tries to use the connection but is only able to make him see things to manipulate his emotions, he can't control him. Maybe the magic of his mother's sacrifice was continually fighting the horcrux ever since Harry was a baby to protect him, & that's why he showed some signs but not others. Also, the diary was able to show him things, but not put him in a trance like Ginny, though he had it for a while.

Here's my question: how does the process of coming back to life via horcrux work? Is it like an extra life, which is used up when someone comes back to life, or it it like a saved game, that you can come back from infinite times? I ask, because Voldemort dies when he attacked Harry, and then comes back, presumably via one of his horcruxes. But we still have to go through destroying all of them. Does that mean that there is a Horcrux that was used up without having to be destroyed, or is it the saved game situation? Also, do they need to go through the same ritual involving blood of the enemy etc etc each time they come back to life via horcrux, or is that just a one time thing? Also Also, What was Voldemort's state at the end of Sorcerer's stone? The Ghost-ish thing that passes through Harry's body. Because it SURE SEEMS LIKE what happens every time they destroy a Horcrux: Something that takes the form of Voldemort's face flies at whoever destroyed it: Water in the chamber of secrets during deathly hallows part 2, Fire in the room of requirement during deathly hallows part 2, etc. I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS

Zoe Bast If I’m understanding your question- he didn’t really “go” to a horcrux, he actually floated around as a lifeless spirit, something “less than human,” in Albania for a long time until he possessed this random dude that had nothing to do with his horcruxes-Quirrell. At that point, there was Voldemort, Harry, and 6 horcruxes. There are many ways to allow a horcrux to bring you back to life, and while the diary almost succeeded in one of those endeavors, Harry destroyed it, leaving 5 horcruxes (6, with Harry) and a total of 7, not 8, pieces of Voldemort’s soul left to be destroyed.

Etho the Creative It wasn't persuasiveness, Voldemort, or Voldemort's horcrux self/soul, actually made her. This is explained in the 5th book when Ginny says, "seeing as you don't know anyone but me who's been possessed by You-Know-Who, and I can tell you how it feels." Nairbzilla no she was possessed by the piece of soul inside of the diary because she had accidentally given it access to her innermost thoughts and feelings to the point where it was able to use the amount of her soul that she had "poured" into it as a base to take over her mind and consume the rest of her soul, rebuild it as its own, and do what it had partially been created for (use the basilisk to attack the mugggle borne students at hogwarts). And yes it was made partially to attack muggle borns because Voldemort believed that he had so many and they were so well hidden that it wouldn't matter if he lost that one. Hope this answered your question.

If we're going on the technical definition of a horcrux being a vessel, then yes, Quirrell is a horcrux. But I would argue with you that, no, Quirrell is not a horcrux since the process to split his soul was not performed. Voldemort also took up residence in Quirrell because he was getting high off unicorn blood and unicorn blood cannot grant full life, so there is that.

I always thought that the horcruxes were more of a power source. I think that Voldemort (main soul) can stay alive because the Horcruxes can keep him alive simply by existing which is why they set out to kill the horcruxes (power sources) before killing the main conscious. I don't think a killing curse could ever kill Voldemort's main soul, just kills the shell and exposes the main conscious but so long as the other horcruxes are out there, the main conscious can't die. Sorry I hope that made sense.

  • @nathanforsyth9882

That's my thought too. Another way is that the Horcruxes are like an anchor, holding Voldemort's soul to the mortal realm and preventing it from 'crossing over' or whatever to the great unknown. As long as the horcruxes exist, the soul can never leave in peace. It is 'less than a ghost', as Voldemort says, and has to live like a parasite off whatever living thing it can find, but still 'alive' in some sense. Destroying the Horcruxes was taking away Voldemort's safety net before pushing him to his doom.

As to whether it is something he would instantly realized, we have no reason to expect that to happen. Harry is not actually constantly hearing Voldemort's thoughts in his head, so Voldemort does not necessary have his own thoughts to hear in Harry's head to tip him off.

JKR has actually specifically said that the process to make a horcrux is too gruesome that she made her editor sick and decided against it. Theories have been floating around about it being cannibalism and other such things, however those don't seem reasonable given that the bodies of Myrtle and the Riddle family were perfect and unmarked.

I'd guess, there is a difference between an intended horcrux and an accidental horcrux. An intended horcrux is more like a safe and an accidental horcrux is just some kind of container, the (part of) soul slips into. I have no clue, how Harry fits into this, but maybe Voldemort was in such emotional stress, that he made a real horcrux without knowing it. Every other container, he used was intentionally just a container. Could be an explanation...

Actually, to be extremely technical, Quirrell *wasn't* a Horcrux. He held the original part of Voldemort's soul. The rest of the Horcruxes held the pieces of Voldemort's soul that were broken off, including Harry if you take your other theory into account, the one that (SPOILER) states that Voldemort killed Harry as part of a Horcrux Spell, intending to place part of his soul into the sword. (/SPOILER) Calling Quirrell a Horcrux is like calling Voldemort himself a Horcrux because his body held part of his own soul. But to answer @Gracelyn_Szynal, using this logic, Ginny would have been a Horcrux, too, because she would have housed the broken soul fragment from the diary.

Yeah, the Trace confuses me so much. Like, Dobby performs a hover charm and Harry gets busted, but Mr Wesley comes over to collect Harry for the World Cup and performs spell left, right and centre. I assume that can be explained by the fact that he had Harry's house connected to the flu network for that day, so the Ministry knew that Arthur would be there? Or does the mere fact that there's an adult wizard present stop the Trace from taking effect?

Haley Stites yeah but seeing as how the ministry is able to pinpoint what spell was used where and around who, I'm pretty sure the use of the killing curse and horcrux ritual would have raised more than one eye at the ministry and to the ministry's knowledge Tom should have been at the orphanage. its a plot hole that wrecks the trace completely but I also don't think J. K. Rowling had everything figured out at the start seeing as she breaks her own rules as the series progresses and completely messed up on the dates in the first 14 pagers of philosophers stone what saying here story starts on a Tuesday in 1981 Nov 1 when it was Sunday

is it possible that Nagini was the main carrier of Voldemort's soul. Voldemort immediately grew weak an began to deteriorate after Nagini died. there was no way for that part of Voldermort to escape like it did when it sensed danger before Quirrels death. just a thought as it could have been a tactical desision by Voldermrt as he thought there was more of a chnAce of himself being killed than the snake and why he cared so much more about the snake than anything else and always kept him close by Why?? because nagini was the main carrier of voldermorts soul. thoughts????

1:54 Voldemort just reverted to a mangled spirit form that could kill the living by possessing them too long and needed unicorn blood to keep the host stable, though he tried to use the life elixir first to come back fully as a living being. The creator of a horcrux can literally never pass on even when their body is destroyed, and Voldemort gained the means to recreate his body, so dying again would be that much of a problem. But his primary consciousness is with his mangled spirit that can never leaves the earth until every piece of his soul that is anchoring him to the earthly plane is gone. Voldemort’s main consciousness was inside Quirrell, but the way he inhabited him doesn’t fit the definition of a horcrux, which was putting a piece of ones spirit into an object. Instead of that, Voldemort fully inhabited Quirrell as his primary self, not as another piece of himself.

That’s not correct. Voldemort murdered his grandparents and his father before. Since you split your soul with every murder in half of what it is, regardless of what happens with it afterwards, he only had 12.5% of his soul left before he created his first Horcrux. So that Horcrux merely contained 6.25% of his soul.

Even if the soul was already split, it was all still inside his body before creating the first horcrux. It's like a puzzle that's been taken apart. It's all still there, but it's together. Therefore, when he created the first horcrux it potentially could have been 50%. Since we don't know how to create a horcrux we can only speculate on how the soul is divided up.

The problem with that reasoning is this: once a Horcrux is created, the piece of soul can no longer come back to the creator unless the creator feels guilty about what they have done. Otherwise, once the vessel is destroyed, the piece of soul is destroyed as well. In Quirrel's case, Voldemort left him to die after Harry fatally wounded him. If Quirrel were a Horcrux, why would the other pieces of soul remain in their vessels even when they knew they were done for? Like, they could see Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Crabbe and Dumbledore use the sword, the Basilisk's fangs and Fiendfyre. Why did they stay in their vessels if they could leave them (since Voldemort left Quirrel)

I understand that the answer is no. Quirel was not a Horcrux. To make a spell or a potion you need a wand. When Voldemort lost his physical body, his soul stayed alive because of the existing horcruxes. But did not carry his wand with him to perform dark magic, such as making a new horcrux. He used Quirel and other animals as a hosts, but his soul left many times to feed (unicorn blood). He only got his wand back at the grave yard, in book 4, when Peter Petgrew gave it back to him.
