That ain't got nothing to do with what's in the Bible, especially considering that his well-educated, high-earning mother and father worked to put him through private school. Right. So why didn`t he tell his fellow men that the most important job in their life is to be a father and that their life will only really start once they become fathers? He only told the women how important it is to be mothers and that`s the problem. He is referring to the conservative religious beliefs that the woman belongs in the home and only the home. He didn`t outright say it, but everybody there get`s the message. Edit: He did outright say it: He told the women to be "homemakers". That`s a word used to describe a woman in a conservative christian household who gives the right to make decisions over her life to her husband, "the head of the household" and only ever is a housewife and mother. Women who decide to stay at home whith their kids, but have equal decision making rights in their marriage are called "stay-at-home-mums". They also often work part time or go back to work when the kids are older. He and everybody in this audiece knows exactly what the term "homemaker" refers to and implies.

Good for Amber Duke. She actually knows Catholic teaching and how the media lie and/or are ignorant about what Pope Francis has said about homosexual acts. One correction, though. The Holy Father speaks Italian, not Latin. Latin is for documents, and rarely at that.

Good for you Amber for exposing Jessica’s ignorance on this topic. She doesn’t know the first thing about Catholic theology and she clearly was not the intended audience for Butker’s speech. Amber is a breath of fresh air. I wonder if Jessica will have the same attitude at 38.
Not one older person will say , I wish I spent more time on my career and skipped having children. Having a functional family will be your biggest accomplishment, and telling young women any different is misleading! With age comes wisdom. Congratulations on your degree, and your new career, we’re proud of you, but it will NOT be your biggest accomplishment in LIFE!
Tolerance, what a concept!
Well said Amber
With a wife who has a PHD in Science and teaches in a college she says being a mother and wife is the most rewarding thing in her life
The woman on the right is so based.
A room full of CONSERVATIVE CATHOLIC graduates. Yes, overwhelmingly these women will likely choose to leave the workforce to have children and a family. Maybe not at NYC or MIT, but at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS his statement rings true. Where he was speaking is inportant.
I'm an atheist and do not share many of this guys beliefs, but I find it very sad that Jessica is arguing that pursuing a career is a higher calling. There is nothing more valuable in society than a loving mother AND father. Consumerism is warping their perspective. I thought the left advocated for a better life balance. Not that the right has meaningful solutions, but this is such a sham conversation. Motherhood is the most beautiful aspect of humanity, and they're almost disregarding it as a lesser than pursuit. Thay being said, it was weird to address the woman in a graduating crowd that way. They're 22, they're not at that stage yet. Given its a catholic school theyll probably pursue it, but likely 8 to 10 years down the line lol

What? He did exactly that !
Your children will always be more important than your career. Total respect for all the mamas that do whatever they have to take care of their babies. I also think it’s incredibly honorable to stay home and pour everything you have into your children. This was a Catholic College commencement speech… I feel like that is not understood to the degree it deserves. The catholic faith teaches all of the principles that Butker speaks on. I’m with Whoopi on that one. If you want respect you need to give respect. It is not disrespectful to tell women about the joy of motherhood… because he’s right, society has lied to us.
Amber! Amber! AMBER! Give me an A... I came her expexting a balance perspective & I got a sharp shooter bullseye on nuance, context, & accurately representing His & the churches perspective. Bravo!!!

Great / honest man sharing positive values
“According to a 2019 Pew Research Center study, the United States has the highest rate of children living in single-parent households in the world, with 23% of children under 18 living with one parent and no other adults.” In the African American community 7 out of 10 families are single-parent. As an African American this topic is relevant for me and should be for every American. This discussion needs to start in middle school and be further discussed in college. American families are in a crisis and don’t let the deceptive media fool you. What they did is diabolical because he never said women should stay at home. Listen to the speech and don’t let the media frame it for you.

This may be a matter of perspective. Children change the trajectory of a married couple's life. I don't look at Butker here as "Catholic Kicker," but as a father. That's the genesis of this in my opinion. It's reflected in this conversation above, narry a mention of children. The focus is instead on "what he said about women." This is the fundamental issue - Children are game changers. Your whole outlook on what life is changes. He's speaking from that perspective primarily, in my opinion.

Yes, and many people prefer to not have children. But according to Butker, I probably stated a "diabolical lie".
@anthill1510
20 күн бұрын
No, he is not speaking from that perspective. If so he would have said "Being a father is the most important thing in my life and I feel like my life only really started when I became a father." Instead he told women that`s how they should see their life and he told this only to the women. And he used the word "homemaker" which is used in very specific contexts where women are told that their place is only to be "a homemaker" and dedicate her life to her children and be in service and under the authority of her husband. Women who simply decide to stay home with their children when they are little are called stay-at-home-mums and don`t live under an ideology where they have to give the authority over their life over to their husbands. He deliberately was talking about the concept of "homemakers", he mentioned all the other talking points of people with this mindset, too.
