Harrier Jump Jet - Vertical Flight

Ғылым және технология

Subscribe - goo.gl/wpc2Q1
The Harrier is one of the most extraordinary planes ever built, informally referred to as the Harrier Jump Jet, a family of jet-powered attack aircraft capable of vertical or short take-off and landing operations. Originally developed by manufacturer Hawker Siddeley in the 1960s, this British design is a helicopter and a high performance jet all in one.
The Harrier emerged as the only truly successful V/STOL design of the many attempted during that era, despite being a subsonic aircraft, unlike most of its competitors. Named after a bird of prey, the Harrier’s greatest strength is that it can land anywhere. It can hover in mid-air, and doesn’t need a runway. It was conceived to operate from improvised bases, such as car parks or forest clearings, without requiring large and vulnerable air bases. Later, the design was adapted for use from aircraft carriers.

    Back in 1979 - 80 when I was doing my military service in the air force in Denmark, the Harrier fighter impressed us. I was a ground-based radio outpost that was to report enemy aircraft to the command center. My knowledge of aircraft was all about being able to recognize enemy and allied aircraft in the air, but Harrier stood out from the crowd, with its unique ability to hang still in the air and to land and take off vertically.

    In the 1980's and 1990's, when I served, the Harrier was one of the foremost fighter/attack aircraft. Unfortunately, it's single engine, light armor, combined with a very vulnerable radar signature, made it extremely high-risk to loss, both in combat, and normal operation. Fortunately, no other country at the time had anything quite like it, and the Harrier enjoyed a long period of superiority in any close combat operations involving friendly troops on the ground.

    very true, in Fact in the iraq war, commanders refused to let it fly until serious pressure was piled on them and then, strictly NO VERTICAL flight allowed. That was in the end of the war. Harrier was great technology BUT little use for combat. Great only for spy movies.

    The F-35 is a dud. Over budget, behind schedule and beset by numerous technical problems. And to top it off, even the US military has expressed deep reservations about it, not to mention several countries who originally placed orders for it, have now cancelled those orders. It's a repeat of the disaster that was the F-111 saga in the 1960s.

  • @Chris23lover

    @Chris23lover

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@EVISEH That issue has no comparison due they tried to get a cheaper F-14 by getting those F-111, F-111 still is a good jet but never so good as an F-14, they need to KNOW their roles, on the engineering behind each aircraft to properly cassify it. And that didnt exist yet... i have an own class system aswell amazing ideas on jet developments... but yeah its all on my mind. F-35 is one of the best hovers along with the Harrier. Let me explain why: First of all is the only one in world that can Hover & goes Supersonic at same time. It can perfect hovreing like a Butterfly, making it looks so light it can perfectly maneuver even better than a Harrier. Why is not better than a Harrier then? bcz it have not LAU Weapons or close support attacking style weapons like Clusters, etc. It hold and internal bay for lasing & EO Bombing, it have amazing range radar capable of taking down lot of Fighters. And its designed for Heavy bombing strikes to destroy big buildings from once just like an F-117. It may hold long range radar missiles aswell heavy bombs with massive destruction power and Maverick Missiles or any Ground Missile. Also SEAD Long Range Missiles ARM & ASM. The engineering behind is a masterpiece thats why is so expensive. But there was 2 and only 2 big mistakes on it: One is not having LAU and Close support weaponry and the second: To create Conventional F-35s using same structure. That was a big waste of basic structure design, bcz its special design is intended to hover, that was the expression of its designers. Its capable of big bombing, destroy Enemy Defenses Aswell taking down very important jetfighters aswelll the capacity to hide and take off from hidden special landing zones. And its internal Technology is amazing. The digital technology, etc. Actually every jet ambition from today's based on US & UK Jets. Regards!

    You'll be lucky to find one, while they could do it, the preferred means of operation was STOVL, or short take off and vertical landing, vertical take off in the Harrier means you're just using the power of the engine alone to generate lift which means the Harrier consumes a huge amount of fuel, which would severely limit the range of the aircraft, taking off using the wings to generate lift is much more efficient.

    The UK was never good at engineering, especially in the aviation sphere. To be sure, it did produce some good aircraft, ie Lancaster, Spitfire, Mosquito, Hurricane, Viscount but for the most part and particularly after WW2, what was coming out of Britain was pure dross.

    Did he say conventional military jets need 9,000 feet of runway? A C-5 fully loaded doesn't even need that (8,300 feet). An F-16 normal takeoff is about 1500 feet...so yes the Harrier is much shorter, but c'mon man
