The Harpel house by John Lautner is the ultimate Californian poolhouse. I made a reconstruction of the house, based on photos and drawings that I found on the internet. To preserve the legacy of John Lautner and to enjoy the beauty of his work.

I am a lover of these minimalist homes because they maximise living potential and the designs are exemplary of what we should be still looking for in a home. I loved Corbusier’s brutalism but this, with its simplicity and those pillars; they are just fabulous and give the stability and longevity to the home; they are where the ‘end goals’ are cemented in both structure and purpose. The basic building elements that create a real excitement to me and I gush at each new focus during the video. We are experiencing a housing shortage in Australia of rentals and Governments are hastily throwing incentives together and these Lautner homes as well as the Eichler would be a great way of solving the problem as they are suitable for temperate climates. Although building blocks are at a premium because of the infrastructure required to support new developments but a whole estate of these homes, I believe, would win over from the more fanciful designs builders would prefer us to have.

I totally see why Lautner was Wrights favourite. While everything Lautner designed is wildy different than Franks work, his combination of the almost bauhausian minimalism combined effortlessly with the surround nature is absolutely stunning in this house, but also the Sheets/Goldstein residence.

Definitely a statement in modern design, but in evolution of living with said design, an accomodation for needs is a reality, i.e. need for more bedrooms. Also for the temperate weather, there doesn't seem to be any evidence of a flowering garden. A section of roses would be a must in the unlikely event that 'I lived there.'

Yes, only one. The house was designed for a bachelor man. However, some years later, two other bedrooms where created by enclosing the carport and placing a second floorlevel on the roof, but this extension was not an original design by Lautner. The current owner restored the house in the way John Lautner had designed it and removed the two bedrooms.
