The Last Original Standing Alside Home by Emil Tessin with Interiors by Knoll | House Tour
Ойын-сауық
Open Space | The Frost House, Emil Tessin (1964)
Architect Emil Tessin designed the Frost House in collaboration with Alside Homes Corporation, with interiors curated by Paul McCobb and Knoll in 1964. Conceived as a prefab design, Tessin aimed to build thousands of these homes, but the project faced challenges, resulting in the construction of only a couple hundred units before Alside discontinued the prefab home initiative just 10 months after its launch. The house, anchored by a steel framework, boasts distinctive exterior walls composed of aluminum-clad panels with a styrofoam core, embodying Tessin's 1960s vision.
Former owners Bob and Karen meticulously uncovered the rich history of the Frost House during their tenure, dedicating a website to share their findings. When current owners Marc and Jennifer acquired the home in 2021, they were surprised by the depth of its history. Stepping into the space revealed its unique character, from the period-appropriate color palette to the vintage furniture and built-ins throughout. The interior design, a collaboration between Paul McCobb and Knoll, featured Knoll's expertise in curtains and furniture, while McCobb contributed design elements such as kitchen cabinets, vanities, glass partitions, and wardrobes. Emil Tessin's connection with Florence Knoll, rooted in their upbringing together, added a personal touch to the project. The Frost House interiors also showcased furnishings designed by Eero Saarinen, a lifelong friend of Florence Knoll, contributing to the home's exceptional history and design legacy.
The Frost House stands as a genuine testament to preservation, embodying the most intact and period-correct representation of an Alside Home known to exist. Preservation in design extends beyond physical conservation, encompassing the maintenance of the design's integrity and original intent. This approach ensures that future generations can appreciate the contributions of influential designers such as Emil Tessin, Florence Knoll, and Paul McCobb, who played a pivotal role in shaping the modern design landscape.

The black lines of the structural grid hold the colored panels together compositionally like a 3-dimensional Mondrian painting. Love it.

I thought that too. The house is so beautiful and serene.
I love this house! Unlike a lot of modernist homes, this place manages to have the clean look without being cold and sterile. Thank God some idiot didn't get in there and start knocking out walls to create the "open concept" nonsense that is so popular today. This house is a winner on all levels. Congrats on finding this beautiful house and keeping it true to its intended form.

It would look worse were it all painted white. I heart that it resembles a Mondrian.
Wow, this is truly spectacular. All of the furnishings are so tasteful, simple and so appropriate. We go to Palm Springs a lot, so many ppl junk there up their beautiful M-Mod homes with tacky "new" furnishings, wall hangings and other atrocities. I would PAY to see this place haa..

As someone who's not American and has never been to the US, it's always interesting to see how the same country has produced extremely beautiful modernist architecture and at the same time extremely tacky nouveau riche homes we see on real estate TV shows nowadays...
I'm a midcentury original, and I think I could gladly finish out my life in that house. I could never afford it, but I can enjoy it....
So glad you’re letting the house be what it is because it’s absolutely perfect as it is!
Honestly, I can’t imagine the steel framework being white and showing the inevitable rust spots. The idea of keeping the creator’s vision alive is wonderful.. Thanks for sharing the history.

Absolutely beautiful. I've noticed there's a growing disdain for modernist architecture, but the beauty truly lies in the simplicity. Modernist architecture might not be everyone's cup of tea, as nothing is ever universally liked, but they could *NEVER* make me hate modernism.
OMG - it's like a movie set. A real work of the 1960's. I can just feel the Kennedy's, the Beatles and the Space Program looking at this house.

Iconic or part of the landscape much like Kraft mac 'n' cheese. I figure that's what he meant to say.
In Architecture 101 class I learned that at the time, the public saw these homes as cheap, unfinished, and barren homes. The insult was, "What, you can't afford a real house?"

A wonderful home from an unfortunately past time in home architecture. Thank you for a beautifully done video and for presenting it for the world to see. When I see all of those old, original appliances in the kitchen I wonder who in the world still fixes them when needed. That too is an art form slowly passing
I'm 61 and when I was a child, I had some modernist home toy kit. I could make my own house designs, it was all modular, kind of like Legos but not. Anyway, I can't revere the name of the toy, but it's what made me love places like this.
@katella

I would have loved that! My favorite toys were a log building kit, legos. I was fascinated by architecture and used to think about how I would blend together my favorite building styles and materials I saw in different countries we lived in when I was a child. Would have loved to have studied architecture. A modernist home toy kit would be fun to have even now. I'm 70.

Total awesome! Love the lines and light.
In the comments somebody mentioned the painter Mondriaan. He was part of a movement called ‘de Stijl, after the magazine they published. Part of this movement were also Rietveld and Doesburg. Both were architects and designers. This movement was very influential. This house takes their work a step further. At the same time it realizes all the ideas and esthetics of the Steil (the Style).
awesome home. Love the mid century style and furnishing.

I love this home! Thanks for sharing. ❤
This house is a dream! beautiful work with panels opening or breaking perspectives from outside in and inside out, open, semi-translucent, opaque. The colors, the beams, all the elements preserved rather than updated 'au goût du jour' adds so much value and spirit! Maybe this is also all part of the architect's vision, but I would consider surrounding it with a meadow - adding highs, lows, and movement to the outside views as well as space for biodiversity, animals and insects to hide!
This house is flippin' fantastic. I wish I could buy a kit of this house right now. The black beams are dramatic and perfect. It is reminiscent of works of Pierre Koenig. Painting them white would be a crime.
The black lines with the colors are reminiscent of color blocking. Color blocking was a popular design in the 1960s in clothes. IMO the black is perfect for the era.
Can't say more than what has already been covered by other comments but this possibly one of the most beautiful houses that I've ever seen. I thought the Bridge House video was good but this one of my favorite. Great video, thanks for sharing this with us.

wow...I would not mind spending the rest of my life in this wonderful place.
Beautiful house but would love to know more about the practicalities of living in such a building. The owner mentions how much up keep is needed. Is that because of the materials involved? And is that why the line was discontinued? Does it get too hot in summer or too cold in winter? I'm fascinated to know because this sort of pre-fab building would help solve a lot of the current problems we have with housing shortages here in the UK.

I absolutely love this aesthetic. It reminds me of my childhood in the 70s. As an older, experienced (and Canadian) homeowner now, however, I wonder about snow on the flat roof. Is that practical, where snow is significant half of the year?
Love to understand what he meant by the continuous upkeep... Is it the actual bones of the house that always need attention or just the amount of windows to wash??... Besides knowing this, would live here in a heart beat!!! ❤

What a cool house! It looks perfect. I do have an opinion about "keeping it within the era" though. If it was my home, I'd be wanting to keep everything the same except the kitchen appliances. Those are majorly functional tools in my household and I would prefer to have a new fridge and oven. I don't think it would steal away much of the aesthetic, would it?

Precisely. I was yelling at the television for him to let her speak (especially while he was droning on about Florence Knoll). Goodness.
I lived in an Eichler house built in '58 or so in San Jose for a couple years, I really loved that house and wished I could have been able to buy one. Yes, the radiant floor heat worked, and in winter it was wonderful. This house is amazing in it's construction, and I love that the original colors of it are being kept.
The "Godfather" of Mid Century Homes is unquestionably the Joseph Eichler/Richard Neutra collaboration...
😍
how can you sell this kind of a house? how? Amazing
Metal walls... wonder.how well it does in winter
Once upon a time on Steam Corners Road in Lexington, Ohio, there was a house that looked exactly like this one…including the outdoor space. It deteriorated over the years with sheets and blankets covering what was once beautiful colored panels. I’m afraid that the interior didn’t respond well either. Sad to see.
