Harnessing the Super Powers in our Poop and pee | Molly Winter | TEDxBend

Winter thinks a lot about something we'd rather not dwell on: wastewater treatment and sanitation innovation, or lack thereof. Surprisingly, problems with proper sanitation in developed countries haven't been solved, though they can be! Winter, of the non-profit organization Recode, explores our squeamishness about the topic and how we can become the solution.
Designer, researcher, and illustrator, Molly Winter, is program director of Recode, a nonprofit that works on legalizing innovation beyond just sanitation. She has created visual explanations for organizations including Beacon Food Forest, People’s Food Coop, Public Laboratory, Medical Reserve Corp, and USA Today. Molly’s work has been featured in MIT’s Design Issues, CDC, Smith magazine, and Sustainability Review.

This is an awesome idea. Unfortunately, the lack of comments and views on this video shows that we as a society are still pretty uncomfortable about this.

I'll bet there's something extremely psychologically healthy about this, also. It's like telling ourselves in an extremely tangible way that our most worthless and repugnant parts that we've been compelled to banish to oblivion are actually priceless treasures.

Why are people so uncomfortable with these ideas? - it's quite well known that pee can used as a fertilizer - but maybe not so much about poop as a source of methane which can be used to generate energy - we could be completely self sustainable if we embrace these ideas!

They should introduce this idea to building companies .Its saves money in tall building How about private houses ? Instead of payi g the council we could invest the money in this system.

Lets get those out houses ready! Guess those old folks were smarter than we thought. We can all have ... our own lil Garden of Edan ! Those fig leaves are also not to be wasted. Everything goes right back into the Land and everyone's happy & super healthy! And have wood stoves and put it all the minerals in the ashes right back onto the land! Yes! ... IMO

Pee is easy you can drink it but poop are more complicate one day if people stop so much drug...about us organic growers if we used that it won't be organic But that should not stop studying to ameliorate the system we have now ....that the Roman used 2000 years ago

I hear you....from someone who majored in agriculture and horticulture studies. The hormones, plastics (estrogens), and drug s, besides the steroids that are being sent into the water are absolutely tainting the water and the earth which we are in turn using too water out yard and shower or brush out teeth. More importantly the municipalities that add fluoride to the water which isn't actual fluoride to behind with, it is actually a fluoride acid which is a byproduct of the fertilizer !dining and manufacturing and mining in Florida mainly. Mind you the fluoride alone that is accidentally spilled on concrete wi L eat through that concrete and create a huge hole. My point is, that it worked pooping into a compost pile a thousand years ago because we were not tainted by man's attempt to overstep God's plan and design. And let's say it is absorbed by plants through researchers she is speakin g of,
