    I have lived aboard my sailboat for 18 years and have installed wind generators on sailboats in my work as a marine electrician. When asked, I usually recommend AGAINST them - for many of the same reasons mentioned in your video. In my experience, they produce FAR lower amounts of energy than claimed by the manufacturers, they generally only produce usable energy between 12 and 18 knots of wind, most are poorly built and balanced and thus produce terrible noise. Most owners keep them for 1-2 years before they are destroyed in high winds or they are discarded as useless. Your furling idea is terrific! I love the idea that it will keep producing usable power in higher winds. This is precisely the use-case that boaters need. Most of us have solar panels for sunny, calm days but we need power generation for the two and three-day weather fronts that pass through with 20+ knot winds and no usable sunshine. I'll follow your progress with interest. If you can make a unit with sealed bearings, sealed electrical connections and IP67 level waterproofing that will stand up to salt spray, that unit can be successfully used in ANY environment. :-) Best regards from Key West, Capt. Blackheart Charlie

    Thank you Blackheart... I love this comment. I have been searching and searching for someone to send me a good quality video of a "normal" wind turbine on a boat or yacht that's getting good strong (or storm) winds. I saw one live once and it was horrible. On, Off, On, Off. Horrible noise, sudden stop, horrible noise, sudden stop, etc.... I tried to get video but we were too far away from it and I'd love to have an up-close video of this going on. No one wants to video the CRAPPY performance of these things so we just have to rely on phone calls and people like you giving us testimony. It would be great to have a good video of this. I even have people call me and tell me that they cannot even have a conversation on the deck of their boat in NORMAL winds when they have their wind turbine running because the damn thing is so noisy! --This is why Harmony Turbines exists. To do better. We can do better, we just have to pull our heads out of our asses (as a society) and thing of this tech properly from the ground up! We are working to give you everything you're after Blackheart! :)

    I bought a Sunforce 600-watt windmill 10 years ago and still works perfectly on my boat. It will still put out 25 amps in winds up to 25 mph before it shuts itself down. I know you can get blades for lighter winds so you could go online to see if you can get blades for higher winds.

I'm looking into building my own controller (Arduino based) that will throttle the output at higher wind speeds instead of simply shutting down totally. I have to wish this adorable couple all the best with their journey to a viable, attractive, reliable wind power generator. I have a couple of acres on rising land in Arkansas that’s isolated from my neighbors by enough land that they won’t be filing injunctions. I haven’t checked for building codes but I will now. I’ve checked solar and the $40K entry point to get enough to matter seems high. This might be a better away.

    Additionally, if I had the money I would have a farm of these producing electricity to make green hydrogen. Hydrogen to be used in fuel cell EVs -- FCEVs. Electric is the way to go for vehicles, but I loathe the idea of these billions of batteries that are being made. The material supply chain is awful (consider where most of it comes from) and the disposal of them worse. Yes, someday they will be gone, replaced by something that doesn't have these problems. Who knows how far away that day is. FCEVs is now. Getting the cost of green H2 down is the challenge, but cheap, reliable renewable energy, like we see here, is the answer and nearly in our hands. All it takes is visionaries like this couple to make it advance into prime time.

    I like the idea of the self-feathering vertical wind turbine - it prevents damage to the unit in high winds. But every wind turbine of any kind needs to feed a buffer like a battery or the grid and then if those are not available, the windmill needs to feather even if the wind is calm and gently running the windmill. That's the second problem that needs to be fixed - windmills need to run a generator that has a load and if the load disappears the windmill needs to feather itself closed.

    We’re in central CA where there are a couple of the large pinwheel farms nearby. I initially thought it was a better option for renewable energy until learning more. That being said, the reason we have them is because of the amazing winds. The Central Valley heats up in the clear skies and essentially creates a several hundred mile chimney. Most days we’ll get “the delta breeze” to cool off in the evenings but it’s a strong sustained wind. Would love to see a harmony farm. Even more so, I think they look cool and would love to have one as functional art at my home. Even more so though, have them as urban art or along roadways where moving vehicles create the wind.

Like I mentioned in another comment I've been researching VAWTs for about 3 years and all different types within hybrid designs and when your first prototype came out I remeber all the videos I followed on your channel as you made it, I remeber the first wi d test (Was sort of disappointing, seemed like more to you than me because I knew this was a near perfect design/idea.. Some days the wind just doesn't wanna work for you, trust me I know all too well!) I don't know what all y'all are doing as far as testing, but I'd be in heaven to have one of these testing positions whether it be a small 100watt, 400, 600.. As I'm slowly working towards my own hybrid designs (sadly lack funding of really any kind).. I have a few ideas for yours especially when it has to close up for higher winds that could keep it turning fully closed.. As always I look forward to your next video and absolutely cannot wait to get something from you guys once you start putting them out there! Love love love your business model of understanding you might now be best ones to do large scale production garunteeing the company that either buys or partners MUST pt out a certain amount of u its to the public is such a smart, simple, and just awesome plan! Oh, also absolutely 💯 LOVE your generator design, it really kills that qaution of folks wanting or trying to throw a generator on top and bottom and the fact it free spins then adds the resistance to make power one moving instead of using a Start motor is absolutely genius! My idea was to take one or two of those PowerBank Solar panels powering a small motor for this in the beginning of my trials, but decided against it, but could be used for your heating element for northern states/countries.. Anyway, sorry for rambling, I get super excited talking VAWTs.. Leaning and sharing ideas makes this community awesome! Keep on keeping on! Y'all are doing a fantastic job! (Are you hiring? 😉)

    Over 50 years ago, Ivisited a natural gas compressor station with my Dad. In those days these stations had a staff of 10 to 15 people maintaining and watching over the compressors. These stations in the West are remote so the staff lived on site. There wasn't much to do being 50+ miles from Big Piney, Wyoming. The folks at one of these put a truck hub and section of drill pipe and drove a playground merry go round. The blades were sections of 50 gallon barrels split lengthwise. They had devised some way so the thing didn't turn super fast or could be deactivated when not being used to get kids dizzy or in super high winds. In Big Piney, a gentle breeze is a 40 mph wind... I've always thought that would be a terrific, low cost way to generate power.

I appreciate that as you apply scientific principles to another level it often produces other negative effects to overcome, but I get the feeling that Harmony Turbines can & will resolve the problems. Congratulations on being smart enough to challenge the status quo & realise the data was erroneous, you deserve success for your attention to detail. Actually the small ones came first but only old codgers like me remember the 1960's designs. The go to solution in the 1920's to 1970's was to add a hinge on the tower and a locking pin and a drag cable. The whole with tower would be flipped 90 degrees putting the rotor a yard or so from the ground with a cradle holding the mast. Then the rotors were locked and tarp thrown over it. This Harmony Turbine is a far better design.

    Possible Urban applications of this tech are fascinating. Many buildings create "wind tunnel" effects that might be exploitable like the 10' wide alley between me and my neighbor which is often more windy than front or back yard. I've also got a spot picked out on the peak of my roof just north of my solar panels waiting for a VAWT that would allow me to complement and balance my solar power. This wasn't brought up in video but VAWT are normally much quieter than HAWT (propeller) type wind turbines so my neighbors won't be disturbed.

    There was an article in Mother Earth News a few years back where they built a monster savonius rotor using oil tanks cut in half lengthwise so they became huge cups that then were mounted on a truck axel to handle the weight. The generator was a modified auto alternator. I'mpressive at the time but it maxed out at about 1500 watts or the equivalent of one household outlet. That is too much work to power one outlet some of the time. I did lots of sustainable stuff back in the day but it has to be worth the time, muscle power and money invested. Most projects in the 70's were cool but did not address those concerns. How much actual power does your unit generate even though it is much smaller? Average inland winds and max output. You are right that people want to see their investment paying off.

    May I know your idea about the: 1) compressed air engine (C.A.E.) = internet said such engine had powered the already mass produced box. type TATA car in India- with 300 kms range before recharging... Its in YT, including a French company advocating also the same CAE contraption for their experimental car... 2) Inertia powered engine (I.P.E.) also in YT- I think a Pakistani, Indian and Syrian were the endorser of such engine designs... They claimed such engine designed had attain the ELUSIVE level of "perpetual motion" (?).. Maybe a hybreed model, assisted by a portable, 2. piston diesel engine- will closed the gap in attaining the controversial, 500 yrs old debate, about the quest for PERPETUAL MOTION!... 3) Gyroscope powered engine (GPE)= the American had been using a "frictionless" gyroscope aboard their outer. space rocket ships wayback in the 60's decade... The word "frictionless" means the said fast rotating gyroscope (minimum of 10k rpm ) was not using ordinary ball bearing- but its axis "freely floating on air" due to the effect of extreme low temperature freezing- they used a liquid helium as coolant... Accordingly, the next generation of MAG. LEV (magnetic levitation) - train will be elevated 2. inches above its railways track, using the liquid helium technology... Experiments shows that any solid metal object immersed in liquid helium- they become magnetic automatically- it "float" above another helium frozen solid object!... Do you have Facebook site?... Educated comment from highly technical people like you - will saved a lot of wasted money and time in prototyping and experimentations phase of a project...

    Yes, HAWT turbines are very noisy and you need a lost of constant wind to generate anything worth using. I have bought, tested and sold many kinds of VAWTs, mostly Chinese of course, and they do work better and much much quieter for boats and RVs. Looking forward to see specs on their PMI and generator portion. They also need to be cost competitive with cheaper solar costs including inverter and batteries. I push people to solar first and foremost over wind because of cost per watt.

    The key is ROI. If it pays for itself in 7 years and operates for 30 years (making that up - don't know how durable they are), then it's the equivalent of about 12% tax-free real return (pre-inflation). Something people tend to forget that saving $100, is equivalent to earning about $150 for typical investors who are taxed heavily, because they jackasses in Washington haven't yet figured out how to tax money not spent.

  • @twcstransam

    @twcstransam

    Жыл бұрын

    @@eventhisidistaken that sounds all well and good (on paper) but when put into real practice it's not. If you read my entire comment you know I built my own 10KW HAWT so i am speaking from actual experience my tilt up mast is 8" scheduke 40 steel pipe 82' tall. It will make my bill $0 when I have 15+ mph sustained winds I get about 5 days a year where I make more than I use. On average over a year I produce 10% of my electricity. Now remember I built mine myself I have about $20k in a Berget 10k when I started was over $40k. If I could $0 my bill every month it would take 5-6 years to pay for itself at a 10% saving a year the math is 50-60 years without any tax incentives. So tell me again how and why a meager 400 watt unit is worth messing with? 400 watt is great for a boat, a cabin, or charge batteries for whatever, but to be effective on an electric bill for a complete house 2000 sqft or larger it has to be much bigger or the house has to be built to use DC because DC to DC conversion is less wasteful than DC to AC conversion. Even with the added advantage of being dirty wind capable 400 watts just doesn't have a high enough output to be effective or worthwhile for someone that uses over 1000KWh every month. It would be like pouring a cup of water in a pound trying to raise the water level, yes you did but can you measure the increase in height?

  • @eventhisidistaken

    @eventhisidistaken

    I think what Harmony are doing is amazing and wish them every success for the future. :) Their design and technology and innovation is fantastic! 👌👍 But I would like to add, The pros and cons of traditional wind turbine technology is well covered and acknowledged but, has improved hugely with recent iterations. NO technology is without its downsides or failings. It should be made clear that NOT everyone says 'not near me' or thinks that their looks are a huge issue given the green credentials of wind energy. Also, very few wind farms are placed so near to built up areas that they're a noise problem or a risk to property. Harmony can't and doesn't speak for everyone. and could maybe concentrate their rhetoric on the positives of their technology and highlighting its benefits. 😊👍

    Love the idea of this turbine. Lets hope it works, and unlike many others home wind turbines. Lets hope it actually produces power.

    Try sending one to leandesign, Sandy Munro outfit in Michigan. They can fine tune manufacture capability.

    I think it would be too expensive for them.

    I really love this level of technology working on being applied in this world we live in. Like you have mentioned, the enormous prop driven turbines suck. Not only are they an eyesore to behold with these massive wind farms but they're hazardous, both for the wildlife environment and for when things go horribly wrong as we've seen. If it were possible to create these same wind farms using the Harmony turbine system, it could be considered something both safe and pleasant to see when you have them in multiple colors and patterns. One thing I was wondering about is do the blades open and close through sensors that detect the rate of the wind or is it done remotely?

    I would expect that these turbines have enough visual presence so that birds wouldn't have trouble avoiding them.

    Also when fully furled or unfurled there is little to no open space for a bird to feel safe to fly through.

    HAWTs are more efficient and some models look to work well close to ground with good tracking, low start-up speed and auto feathering mechanisms. They also, use a lot less material and most don't need gears as they spin so fast. Don't think Savonious design can ever beat them in terms of bang for your buck!

    I wonder if you could build in a small scale flywheel energy storage device to work in conjunction with this.
