It’s really insane what quality you can get in the 100-600$ class. From absolutely playable basic instruments which you can take to the stage to amazing (and really expensive) looking instruments! I’ve went as far as replacing all my Fender instruments with Squiers Classic Vibe Series. It freed a lot of my money, so I bought high quality tube amps for Bass and guitar, where more money still invested (usually) still means better sound. However, I replaced the Squier Pickups with Custom Shop PUs, polished the frets and rounded the Fretboard edges to my likings. But that’s the work I also put into my Fender instruments, the guitars weren’t faulty or anything. It’s just my extended type of setup, which every of my instruments gets.

I'm always astonished at the price tag of these basses. Already own two Progressives, a fretted translucent black and a fretless black. They sound really awesome, considering the price, though, as you mentioned, sometimes a little bit dull. I think, it's really cool, that, especially beginners, that just want to try playing bass, have such possibilities these days. For me it's a cheap way to try out different bass setups, to find what I like best, before getting a custom bass from Sandberg or other manufacturers/luthiers. :-)

Got the 5 strings version earlier this year, it's really nice, especially for 198€ !! BUT, the 118€ PB-20 SBK (satin black variant) has much better finitions, frets, tuners and even pots ^^ My MM-85A has kinda sharp and unpolished fret-ends, tilted knobs, loose selector "button" (you know, that black plastic thing on the selector arm) which popped off the first time I touched it (seen in my unboxing). Unlike the PB-20 SBK, this one needed some tuning on the string heights, but intonation was spot-on. I still love it, but I deffinitely see the gap between the "deluxe" of the cheapest and the cheapest of the mid-tier. Paying for the Daddario strings, Roswell Pickups and active pre-amp, instead of feel and finish. Your video was definitely a big help in buying this nice Bass, thank you :)

Good that I rewatched the review. I was about to order this bass, mainly I like the looks. When I rewatched the review, there was one point I didn't get the the first time: the fat neck of this bass. So this one is out, I like slim necks like the Ibanez SR necks. I own a Harley Benton PJ-4 HTR and that neck is the thickest I would like to have and play. So saving some money and opting for a Harley Benton BZ-4000 NT or Enhanced MP-4MN Natural. Of course I'll go through your affiliate links when ordering, as a little reward and thank you for your work ;)

I personally can't give a damn if HB instruments don't like this or like that or what not,if it sounds good to one's hear it's fine by me.I have a PB20 and it plays and feels just fine. It's great that you get the huge range of choices they provide at such great prices. Obviously with a more expensive instrument you get different treatment and better QC which lowers the odds of getting a bad one (and that happens with HB as much as other lower end brands). If you gig a HB and someone trips over it or you hit it on something and make a dent,or if it gets stolen ,at least you won't think how ridiculously expensive it was and not feel as bad about it.

I had a real EB Music Man that I got rid of because it had too much treble & was more difficult to play than any other bass I had (numerous in my collection). I don’t hear the HB needing more treble, I think it’s just a matter of taste. That proves everyone has been getting ripped off by EB for decades, the HB sounds the same, anyone who says different must have a MM.

24 fret is not necessary. It is nice to have it if you play cords or some solos, but i thing most of the time it is there to make it a selling point. I don't think that i've ever played a song that needs a higher fret than the 15th.

  • @krakenturdz

Its a two octave neck, so the low E is the open string, the 'middle' E is at the 12th fret and high E at the 24th.. it gives extended range.. probably holds low tunings better than a 21 fret too.

G yeah because you see it. Try a blind test and you will notice what are tou saying is completely bullshit. 99% of people does not hear any difference in sound quality, between this and HH musicman. Obviously there are a lot of differences, in output level of pickups in quality of woods and mechanichs, but people just don't want to admit that cheap good models sounds almost good as the most expensive one. Like a cheap jazz squire and an american jazz bass. Put a pair of good pick ups on a squire and you will not notice any difference in SOUND!

This isn't even similar. I never owned a Musicman bass or anything, but the tones are clearly world apart. Having similar pickups has nothing to do with it. The pickups are also closer to the neck, which pretty much explains why it doesn't sound like a Stingray.

That bridge looks too far up the body. Am I seeing that wrong?

Otherwise the neck would have to go deeper into the body and there would have been no space for the neck pickup or the extended upper range on the fretboard

Not quite the Stingray sound, but a damn good sounding instrument. Although I feel like if you want to build a stingray-like instrument, you gotta keep slap players in mind. Having that neck pickup that close to the bridge is just kind of dumb to me. Slap players have little to no use for 24 frets and I'd even argue that they should've had the bridge lower on the body to make more room for the pickups. Again great bass but I personally wouldn't go for it

Lucait So, change our the pickups. The cost of a pair of pickups plus the cost of the HB Bass is still a hell of a lot less than a Stingray. For a bassist on a budget there’s no better way to go.

whether it's a shifty bass or not, if it sounds & plays well what's the problem? Someone who doesn't have the funds to pay for an expensive, over priced bass may benefit from this bass. You seem very shallow & a gear snob.
