I feel the same. There's a couple of channels around, that take money from manufacturers to do (positive) reviews - I know it from a local manufacturer, that contacted one of the most popular channels. Even if I don't agree with some of the Lobster's opinions, I feel that they are genuine.

The hiss from the P pup is because the three pole pickup doesn't balance withe the 2 pole pick up. The different sized coils don't cancel each other out. It's an issue with all 5 string P pick ups that have even sized halves

Thanks for this one. It reminds me why I buy quality basses. The "lowest" I'll go is Sire because the neck on my V7 has survived years of beach gigs and other hazzards. It's Gen 1 stock and still perfect. I wanted to like this bass because I want a humbucker and a P style in one bass.. to use separately. But Even after upgrades, I'll still be worried about the neck wood quality.

I'm sad that you had a bad experience with this bass. I own the 4 string version of this exact model and I was one of the people recommending it to you a while back. I think I might have lucked out on mine, because it has zero weight issues and a very good fit and finish. The pickups are still muddy though, I find myself having to boost the highs on my amp and pedals whenever I play it. Definitely will upgrade it, but so far its offered me more features than any squier, so I'm happy for the price

  • @LowEndLobster

I was bummed about this two, the other two HBs that I've had were very solid - but they were passive as well. I think the 4 string version of this bass is probably the better of the two. Though the B isn't bad on the 5, the non standard pickup size (not a problem in the 4), and increased weight of the headstock with the extra tuner and size, and the muddy electronics make this 5'er not as compelling of an option. If this had been passive w/ better pickups stock with a V/V/T/T setup and a 3 way switch for the bridge pickup, it would have been a better instrument.

I just bought one of these. Everything you criticized was dead on. I get the same hum, the bass weights way to much, and I did notice the passive mode is really dark. I was planning on swapping out the pick ups and drilling holes under to lighten the weight a little.

A few other reviews I've seen have found that the reason for the muddiness was that the pickups were wired incorrectly. (Series vs parallel or something along those lines.) Apparently happened with all of them. Once that was sorted a lot of folks liked the tone much better.

I got really curious about the 4 string version of this bass in blue finish. It has some really nice appointments, neck binding , hardware and looks really nice but indeed the pups and pre are really crap. I would have returned it but it was a hassle to deal with Thomann in that regard so I got 75 bucks off after much back and forth complaining. It awaits modding at the moment and has been waiting for well over a year and a half. I am certain upgrades could transform it into a pretty decent bass and not just polishing a turd. The mods would indeed cost more than the bass. The balance on the 4 banger is ok with strap, but the bass is weighty. Love your kitty.

  • 3 жыл бұрын

I have the same bass. Preamp is not great. You can't add much extra treble, as that would add plenty of hiss. Active mode is a lot louder than passive mode. I didn't find mine to be muddy and I was comparing it to my Sire V7 Jazz bass (which is ofc very different, but you don't need to make huge treble adjustments on your amp when switching between the two). I thought the neck pickup is nice. The bridge bickup needs to be raised a bit to give more power with fingerstyle playing (but to do this you need to put extra foam under the pickup). However, I'll give it a red/black paint job next year, but I'll leave the pickups stock and play it mostly in passive mode.

Hello, i love your channel, you are so honest with your reviews! Many youtubers (not giving any names) reviews these kind of basses, and most of them are saying that they are so awesome but they are not, and that is sad. I bought a squier pj because of a youtuber, and it’s a great bass tho, but not for gigging and recording, all i learned was on that bass, this kind of basses are great to learn the instrument, not for gigs and recordings, honestly if i was a begginer, i would buy higher quality bass, like stingray34, MIM Fender Jazz or MIM Fender P, because these basses are great and you can still play them when you actually you know how to play the damn thing. and if you give up the resale value it’s great on these because they are amazing basses. go for an minimum 500$ bass, and buy something that you idol uses. and check the reviews to see if it’s good gear or not. You should make a video about basses for beginners, how to choose your first bass, because this info is critical. i was mindblown by my ernie ball mm stingray when i bought it, totally worth it!

I agree, that youtubers tend to be overly positive in reviews. I still tend to advice beginners not to worry about the necessity of buying the best possible gear for the start, when they are not sure if they will continue learning or not. It's controversial, I know, but I know lots of people, that were delaying buying the first guitar, because they had to save more money and buy the best gear, and then this cool gear wasn't used at all. And I know the players, that could do wonders on cheap instruments, when it was propery set up. The main Jazz Bass of Geddy Lee was bought for $200 in a pawn shop. It was the 70's model - the bass community says, that in the 70's the quality got worse. If he would ask the community back then, he would have to buy something more expensive! :D Now copies of this bass are considered "the best Jazz Basses". The same with Marcus Miller: his Jazz Bass was also from the 70's, bought not because it was the best possible bass, but because it was available in the store. I bought a Player Jazz Bass after ~14 years of playing, when I started to notice, that I actually need that sound in a context of my band. I started to recognize characteristics of different sounds, frequencies that will be heard in a busy mix, different responses to attack etc. It's cool to have an expensive bass from the start, but for the beginner it's not really that important. In my humble opinion ;) @Lobster: A comparison of beginner basses would be cool, but also maybe something about getting the best sounds from different types of basses (Precision, Jazz, Stingray, actives etc.), or choosing a type of the bass for different situations.

I have the 4-string version and the P-pickup is dead silent :) I changed the MM pickup to a Seymour Duncan SMB4D that I had laying around, and also swapped the pre-amp for a 3-band Glockenklang as well as installed a 3-way DPDT switch for the humbucker to switch between series, parallel and single coil. The bass itself is great and can compete with basses for double it's price, but the original pre-amp and humbucker are pretty bad! The P-pickup on the other hand is fat, punchy and great sounding! Also, the finish on mine is impeccable. I have the eggnod yellow/white one (definitely not a "vintage white" haha) so it's a gloss finish. Maybe there is more problems with the clear satin finish as it seems like more people have been complaining about finish problems on that model?

New comment on an old video, I saw HB made this in a 25th anniversary edition. Wonder if any of the upgrades will bring up the claw value? I think the frets are stainless and maybe something else. I'm interested in the firemist jazz and the firemist this thing. Not sure if either are worth the upcharge for the paint job and SS frets. A few reviews seem to indicate the fit and finish on the firemist editions is pretty good. Curious what others think.

My 2008 Stingray 5 HH is just over 11 pounds! It's hard to believe that was my main bass guitar for 11+ years, but it at least balances well. I couldn't imagine playing that HB for any length of time, so I would agree it's not worth mod-ing. However, I'm wondering if the hum and muddiness is just a simple wiring issue that might be worth investigating. If it can be fixed without spending more money then it might be worth the time before you flip it, assuming that is what you plan to do.

Would consider replacing the tuners with lighter ones, affordable/reliable pickups and electronics and finally, chamber the back and cover with pg material to cut weight. Could probably do all this and keep the total all-in price under $600. I wouldn't mind the work if it came out sounding good. I know this is a late review so you might not even notice it, but if you do - here's one for ya: I'm on the market for a solid budget 5 to take to the gigs where I'd rather not take my beloved Alembic Essence to (or as a backup bass). I wanted a bass with a maple board (pretty much an aestetic choice). A MM-style bass would be preferred, as I've always wanted to add that Stingray tone to my stable. I was looking at this one or maybe the Sterling Ray SUB 5 (I can't shell out the cash for a Sterling Ray 35 at the moment). How much better the SUB is compared to this HB? There's one in my favourite black/maple combo available on one of Polish sites and I'm really thinking of pulling the trigger on that one. Thanks in advance for your reply!

    1. seems like a solid platform. I'm getting to that point to where if I'm going to gut an instrument that much, I'm going to spend the $300 getting a body and neck that I want off husks or second tier parts companies (a fancy neck from Warmoth is probably twice the cost of that entire instrument you got there). When I learn what I want, then I'll be quite specific with Warmoth as they'll do anything from give you a completely uncut body to a full custom route job as you specify, in the cost of the part. Bonus, the Warmoth shop is only like 40 minutes or so from here, I could probably just go talk to them and spec parts out directly with their sales people, hopefully get to look at some parts if they have them on the shelf. 2. WHO SAID BREAK? A break from what? I've learned that companies give sabbaticals not because they're nice but because their jobs are shitty and demanding - don't let this become that. Just keep restructuring as you like it and you'll be well rested and full of gratification. Pretty simple. Good work should energize and improve your overall life and health. If it doesn't, do other work. TLDR if it sucks you're doing it wrong 3. the tone runs the gamut from AM talk radio to stuffed in a pillow. None of it is painfully bad to the ear (no icepick or pressure popping, to cover both ends of the spectrum) but it's certainly dicey and some kid will get a LOT of practice not only dialing but keeping and repeating a tone. 4. Give it away and write it off on taxes as a business promo. Someone will really love that bass for free - it plays up the neck, the frets don't cut you, all the electronics are functional, it's heavy but kids starting out need all the tone assist they can get lol. Don't do a raffle. Find someone or have your discord help you find a pool of people who would benefit from such a thing, ask Johnny and Bully if you need help searching some out, I bet they know plenty of kids who are not only in need but deserving.

I just had the weirdest Idea ever. Swap out with a piezo bridge and splice in a blend knob. Leave everything else alone if possible. I don't think I've ever heard a piezo on something that has this much mass. Maybe that would round out the tones and make it good enough with just that. I will have to figure out what that circuit looks like and see how current on the shelf solutions tie in to the rest of the overall options available on a given bass.

This does not contradict your conclusion, I just might have picked a better one, and that's truly a matter of quality assurance. And the neck dive might be a problem of the 5-string. For me the neck pickup is okay, but the humbucker sound much too thin and clanky. And the electronics are also disappointing, the active output is three times louder than the passive mode, this is just unusable. Because it's overall feel and playabilty is great, I decided to upgrade the bass with some decent pickups (Delano) and electronics from Noll. It might take a while, but I'm really curious for that!

@@LowEndLobster the thing about cheap esp's is that they're great mod platforms, emgs are direct fits for them. Personally i put a p5ax in my esp and damn its a powerful sounding system. And the stock pups aren't bad either.

if you really want a good bass for slap and funk, buy a sub stingray, or a ray24/ray34 or if you have the money, buy an ernie ball mm stingray, they are great. just buy what is on your budget

I have this bass with the cream paintjob and it really is heavy. And that's because the body is thick!!! I measured 4,5cm while the Sire V3 (same price range) is only 4,0 cm thick. And on my bass, there are also some issues with sharp/uneven frets. The tone really isn't convincing. I even consider selling it. :/
