Hardwood bed frame - DIY Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For my ever first real DIY project, I decided I would design and build myself a queen bed frame out of hardwood (wormy chestnut).
Started with an idea, sketched it out, then took it into SketchUp for a 3D model of it. Ordered a lot of wood for the project as I was wary that I might stuff some of it up along the way... in the end I used about 30 metres of timber for the bed, and still have about 10+ spare for bedside tables.
The build took about approx. 80 hours of effort over a handful of weekends. Thankfully had some help for some of it or it would've taken a fair bit longer. Start to finish was around a month of work. It was certainly a lot to bite off, but it all came together very well in the end and I couldn't be happier with it!
The slats came from IKEA, and the side rail and centre rail brackets came from here: elraco.com.au/?product=genuin...

    Yes the music is bad. Yes I should have been wearing footwear. You'll be happy to know I'm working on a new build video which will hopefully make up for the mistakes I made in this one! Should be finished building and have the video up with a month or two... stay tuned folks.

    I would give a thumbs down or dislike because this is suppose to be a tutorial video and the guy doesn't talk or explain anything throughout the entire thing. That's a good enough reason for me. Why waste the time making the video if you're not going to do it correctly and explain what you're doing and the equipment/materials necessary to do the project?

Maybe the your next video could be a detailed tutorial of how you built and framed each piece, what tools you used, and any additional information that would be beneficial to someone actually trying to build this. It came out beautiful, good job.

    How did you get the headboard to be strong while it is on an angle?

  • @KastnerFurniture

    @KastnerFurniture

    6 жыл бұрын

    10:51 you can see there are two triangles behind it. These were dowelled and glued onto the back of the headboard. Then with the tops of the side rails, there are a couple of holes that I have run two allen key bolts (on each side) into an inset nut in the bottom of of those two triangles. Means the headboard can come off nicely... and holds it nice and tight - has a tiny bit of movement but it doesn't get much weight on it anyway.

    It's Australian wormy chestnut, which is a type of eucalyptus. 2 years in and no movement or warping. Solid as a rock. Making it in 6 separate parts that slot together allows for some movement... all the joins are glued and dowelled along the length so think that's helped hold it all together. Have moved house once and it was a dream to reassemble!

    I did upload a sketchup file somewhere in the comments... but it all depends a bit on the size of the mattress and the size of the wood you use

    Think they are called "centre points" (or center points, depending where you're from)

    How did you attached the head board?

    There are two triangular pieces that match the angle of the headboard, these are attached using some inset screw threads from the underside in those two pieces, and 4 hex-head bolts (allen key) that affix it to the base.
