This might sound controversial but in my opinion hardcore became jungle which became dnb. This is the way. Happy hardcore was an offshoot that effectively left the 'scene'. One thing that confirms this is that the majority of hardcore DJs carried on into dnb. Rider, frost, hype, finn, randall, ss, kenny ken, doc scott to name a few. Over the years dnb acknowledged its roots in the hardcore scene with countless remixes and samples from the 91-94 era.

Yeah that could make sense mate... It was so blurry at one point that it can be hard to trace any exact roots and lineage... but that's pretty much how it went. I'm gonna do a 'Darkside' episode of 93/94 stuff soon... ....so many seeds can be heard in that stuff.

Not controversial at all for me, this was exactly how it went. By the time I moved to Sheffield in late 93, it was all jungle/dnb. And the vibe was very different (dark) which is why I ended up gravitating to house, mainly cos I actually like dancing!

@@shaunc9488 Snap! That is what happened to me in London - the scene (from my perspective) went from Hardcore, 91/92 to Hardcore Junglism, 92 to Jungle, 92/93 to Darkcore, 93 to D&B, 94+. I loved dancing and it so happened that the gorgeous women all happened to be into U.S./UK House and U.S. Garage at the clubs I went to. So I followed them and the music there.

Some great toons and memories there, 94 was when I started to drift from the rave scene as it started to die out, but still listening to the toons at 54 and even now dropping into the techno scene

AHH yes 94. Great year for me I was getting into the darker side in 93 so when jungle exploded onto the scene. I still loved me hardcore but after dancing to it for 4 years I needed something different. Yes it wasn't for everyone but I loved it. I was at Dreamscape 10 at the legendary Sanctuary where all these tracks were played. Great tracks, great memories again Jake

Another great show Jake - I really don't know these tunes. By 1994 (aged 21) I had gotten into U.S. & UK House, U.S. & UK Vocal House and U.S. Garage, taking me to places like Turnmills/Ministry etc. It is very nice to hear this stuff - seeing as I was not there.

I was in San Antonio in 92 and 94. Same routine. Sleep all day. Get woken up at about 6 by the woman in the karaoke bar downstairs singing "I can't liiiiiiiiive if living is without yooouuu", see Tony at Bar Tamesis for a burger, few beers and then out. Ran out of money after about a week both times. Knew nothing about that balearic culture in 92, gutted when I got there and realised there was no one playing hardcore anywhere that I could find! You might hear On A Ragga Tip in a disco if you were lucky! Fully adjusted in 94. Another great video mate.

Morning Earthjake....!! 1994 by this time I thought that Hardcore was definitely going through its first of many mitosis and your tunes were moving towards the bouncing happy stuff that to be honest weren't my bag and were just the original tunes from 91-93 sped up and stitched together, mind you I didn't mind some of the SMD, Naughty Naughty releases also the Hectic stuff, Ramos & Supreme and the Sunset Regime were decent enough.. Personally I was bang into the Techno side now (Carl Cox, Colin's Dale & Faver et el.) and even went to some early Drum & Bass nights which were huge in Bristol, likes of DJ Die, Krust, Roni Size & Jody (he of Way out West) but the attitude was a bit more menacing, not so many happy faces.. to quote Mad P from Top Buzz 'D- A- R- K Dark'...lol. Great mix though geez, love the Higher Level tune, it'll be interesting to see where you go on 1995. Anyway Stay Gold Ponyboy....☺

Ha 😆 Yeah that was definitely a common formula at this point...stitching together and speeding up existing tunes. There were lots of quality...more serious stuff in 94, but like I said I avoided all the Basement tracks and some of the other quality tunes already featured in previous episodes. 95 is going to be an interesting challenge 🤔😊 Cheers for tuning in 👊

Not sure if anyone has commented yet on that 'wishy-washy sound' made by playing 2 identical tunes simultaneously (but a micro second out) which you described, but a couple of pirate DJ's I knew back in the day used to refer to it as 'flange'. For those guru's that might know the official term, please don't shoot the messenger 😉

For me it started going downhill in 93. I’d gone to a couple acid house things around 89-90 as it evolved into rave (nothing major), but 91 was the pinnacle as it was still so new and only had a relatively select type of number and people going. 92 was decent but then I found it getting too big/commercial in 93-95 and losing that special feeling, especially with the big events like tribal gathering (I liked it but wasn’t the same really). A lot of newbies were going (think I was a rave snob by then 😂) and a lot more dickheads. Saw a load of fights at tribal gathering in 93, mostly between dealers, but also massive gangs were steaming through different areas stealing off everyone (even sweaty hats). We saw machetes being smuggled in around one part of the fence and it just affected the atmosphere. Some good sets though including the sonz of a loop pa. Rave/hardcore gave me so much though whilst it lasted and kept me and my mates mostly out of jail for a few years (though I did go in in 95 and 96 🙄). We were definitely very lucky to have been around at that age at that time (I turned 18 in 91) and many generations don’t get to experience something so unique, raw, groundbreaking and absolutely mental!!

Brought back great hazy memories of World Dance's at Lydd, Dreamscape's at the Sanctuary & Fusion's down at Rhythm Station in Aldershot to name a few of the raves we did that year. Alright Jake! Really interesting episode and a very divisive year for many!! Loads of the old headz had turned there back on hardcore and moved to the house scene. I actually embraced both, in fact ,because of buying both house and hardcore it represents the largest percentage of the 2000 tunes I own!! Interested to see where you take it for 1995!! I too thought hardcore (as we knew it) would never end but after that summer it felt truely over (for me anyway😭) as the jungle/happy split was well established and I wasnt really inspired by either style. It was a magic ride from summer 91 to 94 tho 😎

You're not on you're own there, I felt exactly the same way. I can only thank the likes of Stu Champman, DJ Nee, & Luna-C (amongst many others) who brought the nuskool (oldskool) vibe back around the early 2000's.🎶🎶 Edit: big shout out also to the Soundcloud/ KZread crew (Paul Cronin, Nicky Allen DJ Crip & D.J Mark C) who also pushed their own take on the original hardcore sounds, who then led others to do the same. Top respects to them!! 🫵🏼

Great video again and great tracks althrough I dont remember too much about 94. I was helping a mate with his mobile disco in the evenings and being subjected to more commercial dance tunes. Towards the end of 94 I got in to the jungle scene and boom I loved it!

Time man.... There have been periods in life for me where months have felt like years ... ...and yet, as you say 30 years feels like it's shot by 🤷

Loved these series, very entertaining, so many good tunes from around this time you could put hours and hours worth of content out.. Tru Luv is a brilliant tune but in my humble opinion the original on Impact records was the better one... Love that Question mark tune, remember Slipmatt used to hammer that one, never knew that was Red Alert and Mike Slammer.. funny how things still pop up all these years later👍

Another great selection there Jake. I think I prefer the original Mystic & DJ Fire than the True Luv version but it's still up there. High on Life and Higher Level monster tunes for me. I ended up liking some Happy Hardcore but deffo jungle going through the 90`s and then it was club anthems as the years went by. Memories eh!

Good stuff. Watched a few of these now. Recognise at least half these tunes but I really can’t make sense of the way my music taste took me. First taste of electronic was 808 state then whatever they played on their sunset 102 show. All the time we were collecting flyers in Manchester and I was religiously buying eclipse/edge cassettes. My favourite early era was what we called “darkness”, all the sinister jungle by JJ frost etc. all the time we would have house tapes too and go to mainly house nights. Around 94 I went full house but later got back into jungle a bit. Happy hardcore was never for me but I distinctly remember a split of genres, especially noticeable when you bought a festival tape pack

Great post - yes, it was Darkness/Darkcore from early 1993 (Hardcore > Hardcore Junglism > Jungle > Darkness/Darkcore) and then a split also in 1993 to Happy Hardcore and Techno (although forms of Techno never really went away and is a big thing even now). In 1993/94 I went down the House route too and was really loving Handbag House (Tribal Records and Club 69, etc). It is wonderful to think that you were going down a similar House route in Manchester at that time - this is why I love Jake's channel, incredible!

@@jaydunstan1618 nice. We were going to house nights in 93 yet somehow it always seemed to be called old school despite most of the tunes being no more than 2 years old. I then listened to renaissance the mix collection and never wanted to go to an “old school” night ever again. Around 96 I made a new set of friends. Between us we liked house and jungle. I was always keen to hear the new house stuff but so many loved the early 90s stuff which I was a bit sick of by then. Listened to a tape of it all again today and loved it. In fairness, Dave seaman Shelley’s 91 is one of my all time favourites

Higher Level were of course Krome & Time. 1994 was the year that got me into Rave music starting off with Jungle then slowly discovering what eventually got termed Happy Hardcore as the scene started to split.

Can you recreate LTJ Bukems blend of two TIC TAC TOE records from Dreamscape 4 ? I always thought it was a different version but later found out he'd mixed the same record together with a slight delay. The two same tracks played together makes the choon sound EVEN better on a whole different level 🙌

When the happy harcore started coming out it was the end of an era for me,but the start of a new trip with techno and going to clubs like club UK in Wandsworth and deep space (colin dale/favour) Also really got into collecting 88/89 acid house as id just missed out on that by a couple of years.

Club uk. The manager asked my girlfriend to speak to him about.... glad l didn’t . Got busted a week later . Phew!

Me too - I think 1994 as I was at college in Wandsworth back then, yes, Club UK was not bad- not specifically my kind of music, but had a few good night there with friends who loved that Jeff Mills Techno sound.

We can blame the criminal justice ⚖️ Bill for that I remember freedom fighters going underground ❤😊

94 jungle is the cream of the crop imo. Hardcore was good until 95 with the 4/4 beats

The change in 94 was incredibly abrupt. Over night the whole thing changed. In Australia the crowd changed and it was hard to find anyone into it for the music and not just there for the drugs. Then came the scurge of happy hardcore.

And also Gabba House too - I had a mate who used to travel to your neck of the woods - Bali etc, and he was bang into Gabba House, a little too hard for me. Fascinating post again, I agree with you, crowds could just change over a short period of time.

All these tracks remind me of Dreamscape 11.

In 94 I bought the Dreamscape 14 tape pack just for Dougal's set. Then to save walkman batteries I'd listen to the flip side rather than rewind the tape. And that's how I discovered Jungle via DJ Hype ..and then onto dnb until about late 98. Did you get iinto jungle and dnb in that year too? Sounds like you tried your best to follow hardcore to its end without being sucked too much into Happy Hardcore. Darkside kinda put me off hardcore in 93 but that's what led to Jungle it turned out. I missed all these tracks you are playing but had plenty unwanted exposure to Happy Hardcore (which had its moments.. Complete Darkness, Marusha from that Dougal tape for eg.. but it was never for me).

Yeah the darkside stuff was a different beast altogether... personally I really liked it. I'll be doing an episode on it some time soon...so hopefully you'll enjoy the stuff I play 👊

Dj Ratty The Edge November Spectacular 👌as dark as 1993 gets. I didn’t like much from 1995, but when 1996 came round with jump up I was hooked again. Recently I bought a bit of vinyl and the guy that sold it me messaged me about a jungle label he runs. It’s ragga style, like 1995, but all brand new. The label is Box Fulla. Some was free, I bought the rest of it and did a mix tape. I have to admit to listening to that mix a lot.

When the scenes split I went down the German techno route, it did me well until around 97 when I first heard Goa trance for the first time. Since then on ive not changed. Goa for life♥️

3:35 - I had that tape deck! It died as the gears in the mechanism were made out of plastic and the teeth stripped off :(

I know you can't include all the classics, but the SMD Vol 1-4 series was very typical of the 1994 hardcore kick-drum breakbeat sound.

Yeah they absolutely were... but for these episodes I purposely didn't use any tunes that I've featured in previous episodes...and the SMD tunes were played in the Slipmatt video 👍😊

94 wasn’t the best year for me personally. This is the year it got messy,cheesy and fast. I was a dj in the scene working alongside Dj Tango in the studio and playing out but this was the year I lost interest.
