I think it taps into something very primal... A darkness that lies in all of us...a strength..a vastness...but one that's totally coupled with beauty and love. When I gaze into the night sky I feel a sense of awe and wonder...but I'm also aware that it's a terrifyingly vast, dark and formidable place. That kind of thing.

Kept thinking it was called The Journey as it’s labelled wrong on the record😂! 93 was quite a transitional year but there were tunes to be loved from all the spin off genres, keep up the great work 👊 PS just got a copy of Cloud Nine/Blacka Shade Of Dub EP & DJ Seduction/You & Me in the post! Pursuit Thru The Darkness is amazing, such a balls to the wall tune with manic stabs, ruff breaks and just a battlecharge feel, like its unstoppable Hardcore, the Underground is taking over!! I think my first recollection of it being played was Ellis Dee at Fantazia 92 into 93. Mental style and such a sugar rush!! Can only imagine it was such a mad rushing moment when Lemon D was putting it together and arranged it into the beast it is! I love the way you critique and analyse the effects of the music and how it works for you. You have such a soothing style too, you could easily be a narrator for a good lengthy Hardcore documentary hehehe. Wicked Jake, I was only 16 in 1993 and still at school until May of that year. I remember very little too haha :D

Love your channel Jake. You've got a real talent the way you talk about these tracks and that time. One thing I'd love you to cover in a future video is whether you think there's ever been a tv documentary that's covered what WE know as that 90s rave scene properly. I don't think there has and I've seen them all (I think). It seems like it always jumps from the second summer of love straight to Castlemorton via the stuff that was happening inside the M25 but without ever talking to actual ravers. I remember Fantazia One Step Beyond at Castle Donington, absolutely massive night but it never gets talked about other than by those of us who were there. Midlands scene and the regional scene in general was so strong but it ain't fashionable to talk about Derby or Coventry or any of them places! A little too young to get into hardcore in 92 but when 93 came, oh my days, all over it. What a year! So many big tunes. Crowd control was just a tune me and my mates loved among many others.

Great as ever - loved the Lemon D, I am pretty sure that I once owned it. Yes, Darkness and Darkcore, that was a sub genre from that time of 1993. Your descriptive of Tough-Toonz, incredible 'every-cell', I have always loved that tune, captures the Spirit of 1992 in 1993! As for the philosophy...so true, finding the beauty of what is there and how we lived. Great Jake!

Hi Jake, I think 1993 was the year I did what I like to call the year i went professional raving ..lol, learnt to dance properly and started Dj'ing, Remember (I think) that it went darker as the year went on and I ended the year listening to more techno DJ's like The Producer, Colin Dale, Loftgroover and the like. I think it was Universe's Tribal Gathering that was the biggy that year, i lost about five hours of consciousness there and still to this day can't remember what went on from 1-6am, just remember bowling up to the main stage as Carl Cox Started...Happy Daze.... Our local clubs were Goldiggers or Brunel Rooms, both now gone, but crazy times.... Anyhoo, great choons and mix, take it E.Z. gezzer.

Professional raving 😀😎 Yeah it was heading a lot darker toward the back end of 93. I remember the likes of 'The Music Maker' playing more at Sterns as 93 went on too...playing more techno. Wasn't really my cup of tea tbh.

The metal heads track,with that amazing section was also on a sample with the terminator,I think that was also metal heads,great selection again👍

The year of the divorce of hardcore as we knew it. Dark as fuck jungle one way. And then that happy hardcore 180 bpm trash. Rest is history I guess with DnB evolving. Hardcore suited the times and served its purpose with a great legacy.

Never made it to Sterns we were solid Campden Palace (Orange) aswell as the other Orange dos at Rocket, Astoria, Hipperdrome. I'd actually paused buying vinyl by this time :( so not got any of these. Will have to pick some of them up.

Orange at the Hippodrome were some special nights for us. Always on a bank holiday. And if I remember right, only ever started late around 11pm-midnight cos Hippodrome used to have their usual club night on first, then us long haired raggamuffins would be queuing up around the block ready to tear it up. Chris Paul knew how to put on a night… I always remember feeling sorry for the little African bloke who was the bathroom attendant (yeah, hippodrome was posh compared to Rocket!). He would spend all night mopping up sick and having his ears chewed off by people pilling off their nuts. Happy days…

Totally understand what you mean about the darker sounds. Don't think you can put it into words exactly; it's just something you feel. I really liked the slightly sinister edge anyway, but I agree it never felt evil. I guess it's partly the speed (bpm, just to clarify 😉 ), but I just can't ever imagine rave sending you into a depressed mood. The whole scene, outlook, lifestyle etc was so positive and optimistic - something to live for!And I guess that's also why they say 'once a raver, always a raver'. Turned 17 in '93, but once those tunes get going, could have been yesterday! Interesting though that the flip side for me is that when I am feeling down, I can't bring myself to listen to anything like this, even though it's so uplifting...think it's probably to do with the fact I'd then start wishing for a time machine!!........ And then Anthem 🤩 Despite having commercial success, it's right up there with the classics and is equally at home with anything more underground. It's also been in my personal top ten from the first time I ever heard it, right up to date and I can't imagine it ever losing its magic. Anyway, I should shut up! Love hearing your narrative with these mixes though and it's really interesting to listen to your reasoning behind the various tracks, along with thoughts, insights and, always the memories. Thank you 😊

There's one EP I've wanted for years, loved it back in 93 and for some reason didnt buy the record then... But now, it's too expensive for my blood. Swift and Zinc / Ionosphere, Affiliation EP. Really want Joined By God, and Blue Is Beautiful, with the classic Magic Roundabout Dougle And The Blue Cat samples. That is one i regret not owning, and it's unlikely i ever will. Great great tunes though

Nice mixing as always! I know what you mean about Orca. Their original 3AM track’s beats are off count imo. Either way, respect to all these old school artists. And that Untouchables record is an absolute slammer. Pricey too. All 4 tracks are dope on it, but the Roachman remix on the flipside takes the cake for me.

Thanks mate 👊 Yeah that Orca track has a messed up beat count right at the start. You have to throw it in mid-cycle to get the timing right. It's worth it though 😊❤️ As for the Untouchables release...yes I'm glad I'm not buying that now £££

Ah ok ...in which case it's a good a fair question. The right speaker is the monitor speaker, in other words the one I use to listen to the tune currently playing in the room. The headphones are on my left ear, playing the next tune I'm mixing in. I have that right speaker higher, simply so that it's closer to my right ear/higher in volume for mixing. The left speaker just adds to the sound in the room.

Might just cost me a couple of quid with that Orca record never heard that one

93 was when it all started to change, the scene got a little serious, my group fragmented into garage house posers, moody DNB junglists , and techno nutters. I went the junglist route… by 96 i fell out of love with dance music.

Yeah this did start to happen. Luckily for me, 93 & 94 we held it together and still had some great times...but it got harder and harder to go out and dance to the music we loved.

@@rave-vinyl-reminiscence you know when you are out out, and you’re seeking that high, like deciding to go to the after party so you can get up there again… that’s how I felt about 94 - 96. Looking for something that wasn’t there anymore. Gosh what a miserable bar-steward… I had some good times too, but (for me) I think I was most happy and hedonistic between 91-92 … with age comes responsibility and worries?

Yeah I totally get it mate. Still to this day, once in a while I head out to a party and a small part of me thinks I might get that feeling again. It's still very real in my head and in my heart...but the clubs can't recreate it in physical reality. What I celebrate is that I can close my eyes and be right back there any time. That's something only those of us who were there can do...and we can do it for the rest of our lives. That's something to be very grateful for. All things pass...and this is why making good memories is so priceless 🙏❤️

@@rave-vinyl-reminiscence Those memories are so precious mate, thank you for sharing them with us who weren't there - honestly your descriptions and stories help me visualise what it must have been like - and it's giving me even more love for a lot of tunes I already love. Going to the next Rave Story though as I thoroughly enjoyed the last one, great music and great people, but I can imagine it wouldn't be a patch on how the real scene was!

I must be honest Jake mate, the first 4 are new to me! Where the bloody hell have I been hiding? I know some of the flip sides, but, yeah. Friggin sponge! Oh, your fiesta wasn't a white 1.1 was it? I had a white 1.1 litre. Was as jumpy as a person with whooping cough! Crashed it into a lamp post 🤣 Quality episode mate. Pleasantly surprised. Thank you mate 👊
