Great information especially for a novice.Thank you! I'm so afraid to damage paint with wrong pad, or abrasive.. A website or database showing details on clear hardness/softness would be a game changer after the endless research.. thank you again.
Very informative, thanks Levis.
Thanks for this. I’ve been looking for this exact instruction. I’m just getting into paint correction and worked on Toyota and Honda. I did notice that the Honda was much easier to get done. Can you talk about single stage next?
You can't tell until you start working with it but the question is what makes the difference. How are the hard clearcoat or soft clearcoat applied that results in that way or is it a question of how the clearcoat ages from the application?
Are the Mazda paints soft, specifically Soul Red?

best red-ever. 👍🏻
I think the cutting compound is more important than the pad you use. You could use a microfiber pad on hard clear coat, but if your polish isn't up to the task it won't do shit. For example, the Fast Cutting Cream, the most aggressive offering from Griot's Garage does absolutely nothing to a 2019 GTI when pair with their most aggressive microfiber cutting discs. Move to MaxCut from Sonax and you'll cut it with just a medium foam cutting disc.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m a beginner weekend warrior detailer. I have a 2017 GTI and Meguiars Ultra Cutting Compound didn’t take out the scratches on my car. Scratches and swirls usually came out when I worked on a Honda with a foam pad and Megs Ultra Cutting compound. Since we have the same make and model car, I’ll try what you have recommended.

@@Ryan-ly8ry This honestly only worked for swirls and fine scratches. If you have anything deeper, if your clear coat is the same, you might have to wetsand with 5-3000 grit. I ended up finding a ton of scratches on my wife's GTI that *nothing* worked...it was infuriating. I ended up wetsanding (by hand) with some 5k grit then going over with a lake country wool pad and Griot's fast correcting cream. I don't know if this is some sort of fluke with this particular car, but I was amazed at just how hard the clear coat was. Hopefully you'll have an easier time.
used yellow wool rupes pad on ford black paint looked like i left marred paint
Seems my harder Audi clear takes on rock chips like no other. Is this common with harder paint?
What about American cars
Even Isuzu Ute has extremely soft clear coat. Get scratches every now and then. Super annoying. Appreciate if you could provide a solution. Btw, I'm not a pro, just need some tips for my own car.
how about Japanese Nissan built in UK? hard? (or american Tesla built in China?)
I've got a a new Lexus RX made in Canada, not Japan, soft or hard? 🤷♂️
And there's also medium hard clears
Not sure why I got here, but I'll save you the time, just use foam on everything
Piss on foreign cars! Is there a rule of thumb for domestic cars, you know, the ones that my friends, neighbors, and relatives depend on for their living?
