5" Throatless Shear:
The Eastwood 5" Throatless Shear turns cutting materials into an easy, enjoyable task. This shear, with its throatless design, can handle materials of any length and even enables you to create curved cuts. The hardened, precision ground blades are factory adjusted so you can spend less time assembling and more time cutting. Start making burr-free cuts in up to 1/8" mild steel, 5/32" aluminum, 0.075" stainless steel, and various engineering plastics, in a matter of minutes. The gear-driven design delivers maximum shearing power with minimal effort.

When I watch videos like this, it only reminds me of how much of a dying breed shops are that do this kind of work. I'm in Terre Haute, Indiana, and I have a 2006 Chevy Colorado that I'd eventually like to redo the rocker panels and cab corners of. They're okay for now (for the most part), but the driver's-side rocker is beginning to show some rust penetration. So, the natural thought was to find a shop who could redo both sides because if there's rust on one side, there's going to be rust on the other. I have some money saved up, so, I was ready to get the job done. The only thing missing? A shop willing and capable of doing the work. I've spent the better part of the past 2 years trying to find someone within 75 miles of where I am who can do this kind of work. Nobody wants to deal with rust repairs, and those that do can't find the panel parts they need to work on anything as every shop I've contacted so far doesn't want to mess with fabricating panels from scratch. And their excuse is never, "I'm unqualified to do that kind of work." Instead, it's always just, "I don't want to mess with it." I mean, I get that it's hard work because you have to do a lot of stuff with metal sheets and remove / re-attach things... Then weld, then paint, then polish... But the thing is, there's absolutely a market for this kind of work. If people struggle to buy new / used vehicles, it means they'll be needing more access to these kinds of shops. Yes, I know this kind of work is costly, but it's less than the cost of a new / used vehicle in almost every instance. So for people like me who want and can afford this kind of work, I know there's a demand for it. Says a lot about the industry, and it sucks. Wish more shops did this kind of thing and I hope things change.

Plenty of Eastwood in my shop, from my trusty MIG 135 to my beadroller and new throatless shear. But I've a newbie question: how about some tips on welding thinner gauge patch panels (on floorboards) to the thicker gauge steel in the stock floorpans. I've found it tricky. Too much heat will of course blow through your thinner patch but not enough heat will result in a poor weld to the original stock sheetmetal.

When I repair truck beds I try and locate used beds to cut panels out of. The aftermarket panels are so thin and dont hold up to any weight or minor impact not to mention difficult to seam weld to original structure. If you cant put a bushel of peaches on it without distorting or bowing it then why bother. I replaced a GM tailgate once with an aftermarket. It folded like a taco when I tried to stand on it. I weight 180#
