I realized I forgot to mention how much this whole thing costs in the review (Professionalism right there!) The Head protector costs $40 USD, and the strap $16 USD. So total, combined with shipping, I paid $100 Canadian for this.

+Julian Schuetze You at least caught the cost of the protector in the frame @2:05 and @7:08, and you mentioned the price of the strap ("about fifteen bucks") @2:52. But, very nice critical review. :) BTW - As a mild constructive criticism, I think you need to use a little more inflection in your voice, especially at points like @3:48, to maintain a little more energy and interest.

haha, thanks. I agree, I was recording those voiceover bits at roughly 3 in the morning so I think I was just dead :P

Thanks for such a good review. I think you're absolutely right about the design catching sword thrusts into the back. It needs to fit inside the rim of the fencing mask, and needs better attachment. I am concerned about one-piece back of head protectors that inhibit shoulder and neck movements.

Too bad it's got these flaws, I agree the concept is good. Have you seen Shawn Fackler's hard back of heat protector? That's a good example of this concept done right.

Good timing! I just found the BoH-protector on Leon Pauls webb page and got really tempted. Might have bought if it had been in the store at that time. Thanks for giving heads up with these issues. Next thing I would like to see you review is the Gajardoni Challange jacket. Cheers

Because of this video, I had to choose between this and the Spes back of the head protector for my PBT mask. I went with the Spes. Same sort of concept, just not as fashionable (and rather cramped). I do feel like with certain modifications this thing might actually be usable, but nobody should have to tool their own gear out of the box. It should already be done.

I don't understand why no one is making back of the head protectors out of the same mesh as the front of the mask??? Make it fit under the rear overlap and you'd solve both protection and heat issues. Make the neck out of articulated kydex, you solve the mobility problem. Manufacturers have been overthinking this for way too long.

Cause it is pretty expensive. Making the mesh for the fencing mask is easy because there are already tools made exactly for that reason and company where to buy blank mesh to which you attach your fabric. Making a different form of mesh from nothing would cost a lot, so you would have either to expect lots of sales or sell them at high price. It would be risky, let's say, for hema companies: they're not big enough to try something so big

I have some extra graphene and kevlar to try out and make some concepts. I've made few hockey masks with these materials.

Would it be possible for them to use a mesh construction to (a) allow for slightly more flexibility and (b) have greater ventilation? I'm not knowledgeable on the ins-and-outs of the mask construction, so I'm just inquiring...

For a leon Paul fencing mask could I use a spes mask overlay?

You can, but keep in mind that since the mask doesn't have that hard "tongue" at the back, you'll probably want to pick up a BOH protector with hard plates in the back, such as the SPES Trinity.

What back of the head protection do you recommend?

Right now the SPES trinity is probably the best in terms of what we handled. We hear the Destroyer Modz one is quite good as well, but haven't been able to get our hands on it.

Maybe a padded arming cap would help with filling up the space?

Leifthrasir like purpleheart has a gelcap that is great if you haven't seen it.

Leifthrasir wouldn't work. Your head moves back into the recess of the protector itself, which is several inches.

Maybe they just should start making masks with integrated back protections or some new type of a complete hema helmet :)

Yikes... that is crazy how unfinished that design seems...
