    I picked up the kit a month and change ago myself. For the most part, and especially for the price, I am very very happy with the kit. I will say that I'm a newbie, and don't have loads of experience with various types of equipment. All this stuff is my first gear that isn't loaner gear from the club. I totally agree regarding the arms and elbows. I have pretty short arms, so the ability to adjust the arm/elbow connector is great. The jacket was more comfortable than any of the loaner jackets, even right out of the box before break in. Not sure if it's a quality of tailoring thing or just that it's sized to me. The vented flaps on the back were a nice surprise, since the website didn't previously show or mention them. It was also nice to get the club patches added for free, which is something they offer. Haven't had a chance to try out the mask overlay, since I have yet to get my own mask, but soon. The legs and knees combo leave me feeling concerned. When you bend your legs, either elevatoring or just taking a very deep stance, there is a gap between the bottom of the knee guard and the top of the shin guard. I can imagine that being dangerous. Also I don't know if the cup you received is different than the one I received, but I was not at all happy with it. It was small, the material had a bit of a rough edge, and didn't seem to be as rigid as the sports cup I already had. No big loss though, since I already had a perfectly adequate cup. The socks are, well, socks. Not going to get much use out of them since I use boxing shoes. My kit was slightly different than the standard, I got a skirt rather than the fencing pants. Maybe I should have gone with the pants, but the skirt seems to be the preference of my club, so I went with the crowd, and so far the skirt has served me well. SF also sent me a pair of their “HEMA kevlar gloves,” which I'm assuming aren't actually kevlar (why would they be?), to make up the price difference. I don't use the gloves, but someone at my club who took them is quite happy with them for rapier sparring. That brings me to another point. Superior Fencing seems to have excellent customer service. I didn't ask for the gloves, they offered them to make up the price difference between pants and skirt. Between that, the free jacket custom sizing, free club patches, and the rep's generally positive and respectful communications (Email), I was left feeling that SupFen was going out of it's way to ensure their customers are happy with their service.

    @@GuildofKnightlyArts does you wear any extra protection for 350n renaissance one for the tournament and it is longsword right? Cuz I got hit by a steel feder few day ago and it leave me quite a nasty bruste while wearing this jacket.

    The 350 N and 800 N ratings have nothing to do with protecting you from percussive hits. Those numbers are just puncture ratings. The only extra protection I wear is knee and shoulder guards. I've never been bruised before wearing this jacket but it can happen - bruises are quite common.

    @@GuildofKnightlyArts Hi, just wondering if the 16th century jacket raises up when you raise your arms and longsword above your head? It looks like the side flaps above the shoulder could hamper movement or raise the jacket up when raising the arms? Could you give some insight if that is the case? Thanks.

    Have any of your club members bought the Superior Fencing heavy sparring gloves. I don't do much longsword, so I don't want to spend a ton of money for longsword gloves, but I think I might like to step up from the club loaner gear if the price is right.

    Thank you for sharing your opinion on this kit with us. Im very curious about the sidesword (rapier?) that was used in the sparing. Ive been drawing up a sword i would like made and the one in your video looks remarkably like what i came up with. Is it custom? Where did it come from and where can I get one? Thanks again, Cheers from the States Mate!

    Yes its a custom job, based on a sword I came across last time I was in the UK. Blade is Alchem, Hilt is tempered spring, made by a local armorer who mostly makes plate armour.

    Great review Paul. I'm sighing sadly because I really don't want to look like another tubby ninja, but I think you sold me. I'll just have to customize it with some bike tyres and get one in pink and lime green, like sister's there. itd be good to compare the padding between the two, or is it a question of heaps in jacket 1 Vs enough in jacket 2. I'd like a comparison between this jacket and an expensive one that works. And lastly, are they an ethical company with good labour conditions? There's a reason that amazon ships from the US cheap and t shirts are $5 in Kmart and it's cause they don't pay people well. I'd be interested in their company ideas on this point

    Id love a padding comparison between the two jackets as well, i much prefer the look of the renaissance jacket, but want a jacket that will deal with longsword and broadsword. Assuming the website is in US dollars, how expensive was shipping to Australia?

  • @Stoccata

    @Stoccata

    The Renaissance jacket was average padding for a HEMA jacket - perfectly adequate. The black one is super extra padded! But you could ask them to do a extra-padded Renaissance - they seem quite open to custom jobs... Can't remember the shipping costs I'm afraid.

    I have sport insurance , but when I started there was no protective equipment you had to make your own ,I used police riot gear which is not easy to get now as things are turning to shit the makers will only sell to police or mod , When I train in kyoshunkai full contact back in the 70s you had to train to take a hit ,to much protection is a bad thing if you don't feel a bit of pain when hit you will not guard yourself and just attack as if your in a suit of armour ," long sword" not sword and target A mask and good gloves and light body armour so you don't get broken bones is best and have a fear for the weapon

    @@marksteven6116 It is entirely possible to teach and educate about proper defense without causing actual injury or severe pain. Sparring is sparring, being hurt is a possibility, but you make it sound as if pain and suffering of students is a tool you would like to see used in actual HEMA class regimen. This is messed up, and unnecessary. Workplaces do not teach you how to work on a lathe or an oil rig by having you shove your hand into moving parts, there are other techniques that are used to accomplish this same end without the injury of the people involved.
