Yeah. It is depressing when reactors think that classic songs are rip offs of other songs. If people think that Sweet Home Alabama and this song are the same song, they are freakin' deaf. It reminds me of when John Fogerty had to take the stand and explain with a guitar how a song he recently created was different than a song owned by a record company he created decades prior to avoid being sued.

Warren died, far too young, from cancer. If you want to tear up, watch his final public performance on the David Letterman show. At the end, Dave asks him what lesson he like to pass on, and Warren said, "Just enjoy every sandwich. NO PARODY OR JOKE!!! He was one of the great songwriters of the time and an original all the way. Warren didn't take anything from Sweet Home Alabama. His album Excitable Boy, the album this song you played was on, is one of the great albums. He was the real deal. Listen to Excitable Boy, Lawyers Guns and Money, Tenderness on The Block, Veracruz is Dying. He wasn't a joke at all, rather a monster talent and a bad boy who wrote, composed, and performed. There’s the Kid Rock song “All Summer Long” that mashes these two riffs up, but the piano riff in Werewolves doesn’t have a descending bass, while the guitar riff in Sweet Home does. This chord progression, V IV I, is fairly common in pop and rock - Back in Black, ACDC; Centerfold, J. Giles Band; Don’t You Forget About Me, Simple Minds - and appears in hundreds of songs. My favorite use of this, though, is in the verse of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River.”

True story. When my kids were teenagers, we took a family trip to Europe. Werewolves of London was a favourite song in my family at the time. My wife and daughter decided to go shopping in Harrods and the two boys and I were at a loose end in Soho. So we followed the instructions in the song, “I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hands, walking through the streets of Soho in the rain, looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook’s.” We saw a sign pointing us to Chinatown, and there it was- Lee Ho Fook’s Chinese Restaurant. There was even a sign in the window, referring to this song. WZ had lived in an apartment nearby when he wrote this song. So we went in and ordered a dish of Beef Chow Mien. Sadly, it is no longer there.

And one of the ways I could always cheer her up was mashing things that were just crazy. Like one time I did a commentary of Winnie the Pooh as Robin Leach as if he was featuring them on lifestyles of the rich and famous or some red carpet event? So I'd put on that dumpy British accent and talk about Pooh bears diamond encrusted honey pot or how Eeyores tail was tacked on with a solid gold nail. Christopher Robin had on Louis Vuitton short pants and piglet had a chanel scarf. The other thing I did was sing her werewolves of London in the voice of Elmer fudd. when I got to the part...Widdoe ode wady got mutiwated wate wast night. Woop! I'd wike to meet his taiwor. She would be on the floor.

Warren had occasionally filled in for Paul Schaefer leading the band on the Late Show. One of those appearances, Dave noticed Warren's deadpan demeanor and asked him if he was having fun. Warren answered, "Dave, I'm the deputy of fun!" and opened his jacket to reveal a deputy's badge pinned inside the lapel.

Warren was one of the truly great musicians of his time. It was not a parody. It was not taken from Skynnyrd. Some rapper or like Kid Rock or somebody took from both songs and mashed em together. They are similar baselines, but not the same tune. Warren was very respected as a musician by people who really knew music. He sadly passed too young. He had (I think) lung cancer. After trying what they could, he knew his time was limited. He still managed to record another album and do some shows. He made a final appearance on the Letterman show (a show he had done many times) and they talked about his cancer and his trying to get his life in order for his wife and kids. He did a few of his hits including Letterman's request for one of his faves. That appearance on Letterman is on KZread. Also the movie The Color of Money with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise used this song. One of my personal faves and the song I was first introduced to of Warrens music was Roland the Thompson Gunner. It was a commentary on war and the kind of covert activity carried out by governments. Some of his songs were thought to be just evocative but were really and smartly written to make people think.

The Vh-1 documentary of the making of Warren's last album 'The Wind' is also on youtube. In an interview that I haven't been able to find again, Warren talked about Dr. Stan taking him to get checked out and getting all the news at once. He said basically it was like, "The bad news is you have inoperable, terminal cancer. The good news is you won't have it for long." I miss that dark sense of humor.

I like the detail viz: "He's the hairy handed gent who ran amok in Kent". That's OK, when he moves to London he'll probably move to somewhere south of the river, like working class Clapham. However, "Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair". WAIT ....... that's in posh, affluent NORTH London. 😱😱😱 OMG, HE'S CROSSED THE RIVER 😱😱😱. And when Warren confirms that he'd "like to meet his tailor" it confirms WE'RE ALL DOOMED. "Little old lady got mutilated late last night" - great alliteration.

"Werewolves of London" is a rock song performed by American singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. It was composed by Zevon, LeRoy Marinell and Waddy Wachtel and was included on Excitable Boy (1978), Zevon's third solo album. The track featured Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on drums and bass respectively. The single was released by Asylum Records and was a top 40 US hit, the only one of Zevon's career, reaching No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 that May.

I recommend “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” or “Carmelita”. There are other great suggestions in the other comments. He was good enough that Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks sang backup on some of his recordings. Ronstadt actually covered some of his songs.

It's ZEE-von. And 1977 is well past the "hippie" days, but whatever. Warren was known for his acerbic dark humor. So we get this song about how the world is full of empty vanity, and people who might be literal monsters are being admired for their style. And other songs like "Excitable Boy", where a rather disturbed and dangerous teen is excused as merely being an "excitable boy". Must-listens include "Lawyers, Guns and Money", "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" and "Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me". Like David Bowie, Zevon made his final album when he knew he was dying. (Only 53, from cancer. Don't smoke, kids. Seriously…DON'T SMOKE.) Some of those songs are positively heartbreaking, especially "Keep Me in Your Heart". It's sometimes forgotten how much David Letterman loves music, and how much musical acts were a part of his show, for 30 years. Warren was Dave's favorite performer, EASILY. When it turned out that Warren was dying, he went on Dave's show one final time, and Dave gave him the entire hour, no other guests, nothing. A beautiful farewell to a great talent.

Don't mind the violence and gore! Warren often wrote (terrific) songs that ran over toward the darker side of life. On this record were Excitable Boy (dark), Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner (dark), and maybe on this album was Poor Poor Pitiful Me (dark). He was, as everyone has commented, an immensely talented songwriter and musician. So many folks covered his work. AND it is very much NOT a parody of Sweet Home Alabama or any other song. THe progression is similar but so many rocknroll songs use that same pattern.

The last name is pronounced ZEE-von. Although "Werewolves" was his biggest charted tune, I think he later got a bit tired of people associating him with that song alone. Because he had such a large and amazing catalog of tunes, and his fans included Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. Warren's music usually had a very dry and often dark sense of humor, but he was also known for some truly brutally honest and heartbreaking tunes. He also wrote several songs which were covered by Linda Ronstadt: "Hasten Down The Wind", "Mohammed's Radio", and one which was a huge hit for her, "Poor Poor Pitiful Me". In 2002, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and wrote an incredibly poignant and highly critically acclaimed collection of songs which became his final album. Thus he was able to say goodbye through his music. Very sad, but at least we got to enjoy his genius for a little while.

Warren is a great songwriter, and I encourage you to check out songs like “Excitable Boy”, “Lawyers, Guns, and Money”, and “Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner.” All weird song titles, all pretty weird songs, and all pretty much genius in my opinion. “Keep Me In Your Heart” is another touch of genius, though it’s a heartbreaking listen knowing he wrote it post-cancer diagnosis. Written for his wife, he had to have a makeshift recoding studio set up in his home just so he could finish it. As for “Werewolves Of London”, it was just a silly song with no deeper meaning. Some of his other unique songs definitely have a deeper meaning, but he mentioned numerous times this was more a novelty song than anything else. I think it even started based off a joke from a fellow musician. I’m pretty sure he even lamented at one point that his most famous song (this one) was such a lightweight (lyrically speaking). I’m also pretty confident this song has Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood (drums) and John McVie (bass) on it , but I could be thinking of something else. Speaking of other musicians, Warren Zevon was a beloved individual among his peers. What he lacked in fame among music fans, he more than made up for in genuine friendships in the music business. A true musician’s musician, the list of Zevon’s legit friends in the business is downright absurd.

Alternately, he wrote absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful songs like "Tenderness On The Block", "Mohammed's Radio", "Desperados Under The Eaves" and "Searching For A Heart". Song began as a joke by Phil Everly (of the Everly Brothers) to Zevon in 1975, over two years before L.A. recording sessions for ["Werewolves"]. Everly had watched a television broadcast of the 1935 film Werewolf of London and "suggested to Zevon that he adapt the title for a song and dance hit or a disco hit." Zevon played with the idea with his band-member bassist and guitarist, who (all three) wrote (the lyrics and melody to) the song together in about 15 minutes. These were transcribed by Zevon's wife Crystal, however, none of them took the song seriously. "Lee Ho Fook" was a Chinese restaurant on 15 Gerrard Street in London's Chinatown, in the West End of London. Lon Chaney and his son Lon Jr. were (both) Hollywood horror (including "werewolf") film stars (in real life, the Queen Would NOT Have Been Amused). "BBC Radio 2" listeners rated this song as having the best opening line: "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand". After Zevon's death in 2003, friend Jackson Browne had noted that he interpreted the song as describing an upper-class English womanizer: "It's about a really well-dressed, ladies' man -- a "werewolf", preying on little old ladies [as in a Mel Brooks comedy film "The Producers"] . In a way it's the Victorian nightmare, the gigolo thing."

Warren had one of the most heartbreaking songs I've heard. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2002 and died in 2003. During that time he recorded a final album that included "Keep Me In Your Heart" kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y3-etK6qZNisZKQ.html When you consider that this song is when he knew he was dying, I breakdown thinking about it every time. Trivia: This song was also used at the very end of the series House M.D.

David Letterman was a really big deal in late night chat shows. When Dave went in for heart surgery, Warren stepped in to lead Letterman's show band for the time Dave was out. Later, when Dave learned the news about Warren's health, Dave cleared the bookings for an entire episode & handed it to Warren to to with as he wished. They talked about Warren, his life, his illness, his music. Warren performed. Dave never gave a show over to a single guest before or since.

Warren was a genius songwriter and Werewolves of London would maybe be his 50th best song. The first line of the song is "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand. Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain. He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook. For to get a big dish of Beef Chow Mein." I took a trip with my brother Bob to London and Lee Ho Fook was closed, but a new Chinese restaurant called Dumplings Legend was in the same place. Beef Chow Mein wasn't on the menu, but they made us each a big dish of it anyway. RIP Warren I did what I could to honor you.

Echoing the other commenters, Zevon was a gifted songwriter and musician. He had a mordant wit that embraced the macabre, as in in this song; but he also wrote drop dead gorgeous beauties like "Desperadoes Under the Eaves" and Accidentally Like a Martyr." Go deeper. It will be worth your time.

Throughout my life I have enjoyed Warren’s many fine albums/songs, especially his sharp wit and clever phrasing. Since my own diagnosis (myeloma) at age 58. I have a special appreciation for his saying “enjoy every sandwich” and his song “Keep Me In Your Heart.” Both have been conversational door-openers for me with regard to attitude, feelings, and decisions that have needed to be made. I’m looking at age 62 before year end. I’ve had to fight hard for it but I am so fortunate to have had the time to do and say what is important to me to/with the people who are important to me. Every day, countless people leave home in the morning with no idea they will not be home for dinner, or ever again. That would have been so much sadder and difficult for family and friends.

May he rest in peace. Warren Zevon was one of the best songwriters, ever. He mostly used a "storytelling" style of composing that made him stand out among his peers. You could listen to his work for days, finding new favorites every step of the way. I highly recommend you do just that. You may find other stuff you want to react to, but you will definitely find new music you will love in his work.

I hear the similarity you all are mentioning, but now go back and listen to the guitar riff from Sweet Home Alabama and then Zevon's piano riff - they are not at all the same melodically. They are similar rhythmically. It may make you think of the song but it is not the same riff. Nope, this song came out four years after the Lynyrd song and please don't equate them. Lots of rock songs use the same chord progressions, which is what makes them sound "the same." 90% of them are "1-4-5" chord progressions. This song is a variation - it is in G and the chords are D-C-G (5-4-1) over and over. The same chord progression is used on parts of "SHA" which is what produces the similar sound, but like I said 1-4-5 is used on 90% of rock songs. If you pick up a guitar and learn to play C, F, and G chords, or D, G, A, you can strum most rock songs. Almost all the Beatles songs are like this, at least the early ones. It is variations on the chord progressions and the scales used that make for different genres and kinds of music. A blues scale is different from a rock scale, for example. Then there is blues rock. A pentatonic scale is different from a mixolydian one. You all keep working on it - you are "getting better all the time" (a Beatles song).
