One time Hank was holding auditions for a steel guitar player for the band. A player auditioned and just burned up the steel, played the strings off of it. The existing band member got excited and just cheered and clapped, all but Hank. Hank finally spoke and said "That was really good, but can you dumb it down a little?'. The guy said he didn't understand what Hank meant, to which Hank replied, "I want a farm boy to hear it on Friday night and then be able to whistle it in the field on Saturday". I always loved this story, it give insight to Hank's understanding of his fans. Keep it real, keep it relatable, but most of all, keep it simple, a true genius.

Hank was a brilliant songwriter as well as singer. He could reach right into your heart and bring out emotions you didn't know existed. He could make you laugh or cry. Manic depressive people are usually so talented and artistic in some way. Keith Whitley and Edgar Allen Poe are prime examples.

Hank Sr is my favorite country artist of all time. Grew up listen to him with my grandpa and dad/uncles. I’m relatively young, and my friends never understood it. Now that we’re getting older they’re finally appreciating him lol

Great tune ....I believe Hank wrote a lot of these heart breaking songs after his marriage break up..... you can feel the hurt in his voice as well as the lyrics

I didn't even know Hank (or Country) until I was in my thirties. He's the holy grail of Country for me. 'Cold cold heart'.

Hank Sr. was a sad man. His wife was hard to deal with and also from what I've learned, Hank wanted to entertain but he didn't want the trappings of fame. He had a bad back that required medication. What a guy and a 10 is right on.

I could listen to Hanks all say long. He's the King of Country for sure!

I grew up listening to Hank Williams. My dad taught me to two-step to this.

The late Don Helms, steel guitar player, told the story that this release was done in only one take. No one made a mistake bad enough to start over with a second take. He also said that day at the recording session was the last time he saw Hank alive.

Hank was a big star for 6 years. He was only 29 when he passed. I was a year and a half old when he passed. This is the very first song I learned to play and sing. He was my inspiration as to why I wanted to play and sing country music

Could you please review On the Wings of a Dove? I think it was by Hank Snow. It was my dads favorite. We played it at his funeral. He will be gone 10 years this. March. I listen to it once a year in March and remember him.

My Dads favorite singers . Hank always sang with such pure sadness and pure country sound . He was very good.

It just amazes me that there are people who don't know who Hank Sr is! At some point growing up(1960s/70s) listening to real Country Music, you learn about the older singers, the Trailblazers of Country. I am still learning today. In the 90s I tried to introduce my nephews to the singers & songs I listened. Hank Sr, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Barbara Mandrell, Charley Pride, Donna Fargo, George Jones, T. E. Ford, Conway & Loretta, Tammy, Dolly, Ray Price, Johnny Horton, Lynn Anderson, Roy Rogers & the list just goes on. It made me sad☹ they didn't want to listen & didnt care. Same as todays radio & the fans of what they call Country Music.

Edna, our younger son loved the music I listened to when he was in his early teens. We saw Jerry Reed, John Denver, and half the country acts in the U.S., at the Jamboree in the Hills events, among others.

@@joycemcfee1829 I always wanted to go to the Grand Old Opry or Jamboree in the Hills but I never got to. Bet you had a blast. Now the only reason I'd want to go to Nashville is to see the Ryman Auditorium or the CMA Museum. I did get to go to Dollywood. I spent hrs in her Chasing Dreams Museum. I didnt want to leave, so much to see.

Hank wrote this and all of his songs. He got his ideals from the romance comic books he read, and yes he was a sad man. I hear pain in his voice. He was a haunted soul.

Recorded in September 1952 three months before his death on January 1, 1953. Hank did not live to ever perform this song live. It was released just after his death in 1953.

People say if you wanna know how Hanks life was, just listen to his music. You can hear the pain in his voice. Other good ones are, I’m so lonesome I could cry, lost highway, why don’t you love me etc.

My Dad played piano by ear, and he always played this song for my mom. She never cheated on him or even came close but he was 16 years older than her so I guess he always felt she might. But this song always reminds me of Dad!

Hank has a way of focusing in on the things in life that just rip your heart out. Another good one from Hank is Lost Highway. Really showcases his songwriting ability as well as his singing ability. He was known as the Hillbilly Shakespeare.

They don’t call him the Hillbilly Shakespeare for nothing. ETA: I don’t know where you’re from but I can tell you’re not from where both Hank &I are from, Alabama. So you might find it interesting to know to say something “will tell on you” is an southernism I grew up hearing. A common context would be like what you do to your body when you’re young will “tell on you” later. It kind of means ‘come back to haunt you’. I think here Hank is using it as a double entendre of sorts; yes, a cheating heart will come back to haunt you, but it will also tattle on you to others. Just my take.

One of the amazing thins about Hank is the effortless way he sings. He is always tone and pitch perfect. And you can understand every word he says. No having to go look up lyrics.

I am old enough that I first heard Hank on old 78 records. I was about 3 and I couldn’t read but I could pick out Hank just from the pattern of the letters. I got hooked very young.

Almost in tears, here. This takes me back to my childhood. My Mother had country music on the radio all the time, and Dad would make fun of Hank by howling as he walked around the house. I used to sing to this song while doing my homework. When I got on the school bus after Christmas vacation (Jan. 1953), my girlfriend told me that Hank Williams had died. I wondered why she would be listening to this on the news, because of her family's strict religion. So now you know where I was when I heard that Hank had died. Had to get that out. Nostalgia seems to have taken over, along with this virus. Thanks for playing Hank.

I just thought of another Hank song! "You Win Again"! Hank's life is reflected in his songs!

I have a 45 rpm double album of Hank Williams where he goes by the name of Luke the Drifter. Great songs. Many of them have a religious overtone. Some are humorous. I SAW THE LIGHT. and WHY DON’T YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO. and then there is the classic, CONVERSATION WITH A MULE.

His bio movie was good. Love his singing.

For the record the bass your hearing on this version is someone playing an electric bass over the original recording and they put it way up in the mix. I'm surprised we can hear the bass, honestly. Hank himself always kept it on the back burner, and I've never head it so clearly as here. Has to be a remastered version. BTW, don't overlook Hank's peer and rival, Lefty Frizzell. His version of 'Long Black Veiil' was the biggest hit.
