Handspinning singles yarns, cotton on a spinning wheel and wool carding videos (Episode 105)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

All about handspinning yarn, knitting, owning a wool mill, farm life and everything in between.
Handspinning talk galore in this episode I show you the finished singles yarn that I was working on last week and start a new cotton spinning project on my spinning wheel. I also have videos from inside the mill as I work on the Romney wool, alpaca, and silk blend Halsey. I also share what I am reading including the book I just finished. And of course an update on my Calliope sweater!

Thanks for another great video! I really enjoy them! Mill equipment is magical - it’s amazing what it does! Alpaca fibre is naturally water repellent - that’s why is bubbles up in the water that way! (I am an alpaca farmer.) Have a wonderful day!

I’m not getting the correct stitch count for my handspun. My yarn measures to a dk weight. I have ripped it back 3 times. Kind of frustrating . I haven’t given up yet.@@ewethfulfiber

Your Calliope and that single-ply yarn both look great! You are getting close on the sweater. Love that chocolate-colored alpaca. When you made the dark brown Halsey, you must have also used a similar shade of Romney - what about the silk? Hope you all have a lovely time at Mill Day today - I'll be on my way north from Ashland soon, but not soon enough to join you.

Love your videos Kim! Especially the parts with the mill equipment :) Does your long draw class include long draw on suspended spindles, or is it exclusively long draw on wheels?

Two questions: about what proportions are the romney/alpaca/tussah in the Halsey? And two: I have a light grey Halsey that has weird little hard bits that appear attached to some of the silk (in the middle of the fibers, and I have to pull out those fibers in order to pull the hard bits out); I first spun up a dark grey that didn't have those, or at least not as much! What ARE they, do you know?? That said, even with having to pause and pick those out, Halsey really does just melt through my fingers into beautiful yarn. The dark grey 4oz spun up to a DK weight 3ply that's just absurdly even and gorgeous. I might have to go buy some of that dusky rose, maybe do some colorwork all in Halsey naturals...

I'm not sure what it could be. Maybe a dander of some sort. Each color batch has totally different fleeces, blankets, etc. Glad it was so a lovely spin. I saw you ordered some! It's on the way Friday. Thank you!!!

Thank you for sharing Mill videos, I find them inspiring. Just curious, what do you use to condition the fiber with after picking and before carding. I sometimes find my fiber gets full of static between picking and carding. I tried spritzing with plain water, but that really was not helpful. Thank you

@@ewethfulfiber thank you, there is sooo much good information in your blog. Love the idea of a 3 ply sock yarn were one ply is counter clockwise &all 3 are played counterclockwise. I am going to try that

Something I do with my Majacraft when spinning longdraw is tip the flyer away from the direction I’m long drawing and this stops me from twisting back too far. Also wouldn’t the Halsey blend be a good sock yarn?

  • @ewethfulfiber

Interesting. Do you mean twisting back to far ergonomically? Is that a weird, lol. And yes good thought that it would make a nice sock yarn!!!
