Handspinning for sock yarn, skirting Shetland fleece, another knitting project cast on (Episode 104)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

All about hand spinning yarn, knitting, owning a wool mill, farm life and everything in between.
This episode has loads of handspinning tips as I work on two different spinning projects and explain my thought process behind making my spinning wheel adjustments and playing with yarn color samples. I also talk a bit about handspinning sock yarn and show the making of this roving on from inside the wooI mill. And of course there is knitting talk as I make progress on my Calliope sweater and cast on for a pair of socks. Special bonus, a video as I talk through skirting a Shetland fleece.

I love the barber pole one-- the turquoise really pops, fantastic ❤

My preference is the barber pole in the skein. Make a swatch with them both and then decide. If you can 😂.

A swatch! I'm not the best at swatching, lol. The samples were a stretch for me!!!

knit them both into samples and you can see how the colours knit up.. also what i do is knit with both one row of each in the round ❤

This is such a great idea but I'll be honest, the samples were hard enough for me. Swatching would be a mountain top climb, lolol.

I think the chain ply looks better in the skein, but I would like the barber pole better when knit. That kind of speckly, dimensional color is so beautiful and very handspun in nature. It's why I don't do much chain plying for color separation.

It is lovely! I'm just not sure I'll use it in the barber pole. Still deciding lol!

Great to see you. I'm a little behind on videos. So I'm catching up. Your sweater is gorgeous. Prineville yarn/fiber for the win. Love the combo ❤

Btw-I think that the chain-ply really lets the reds shine! Not that the barber pole isn’t pretty, but harder to pair it with a pattern.

I loved the skirting video, thank you! and also I would LOVE to buy nylon-free sock yarn. I know you said you won't make yarn with it, but just putting in a vote in case you consider for the future. I do love to spin, but don't trust myself to spin with mohair yet. I've heard its sticky!

Thank you and hope the skirting video helped. I no longer have a large spinner at the mill which is why I don't do the sock yarn anymore. How long have you been spinning? Good clean mohair should not be sticky but the opposite, it should be a bit slippery and generally drafts very easily (sometimes too easily)

Beautiful color on the socks. I have done lots of stockings but just learning actual socks. My followers have been watching my slow progress but I only do it usually on the go. I am doing Vanilla socks by CrazySockLady and she has a video that goes with the pattern and I agree, it has been a game changer. I have made the same mistake as you with my yarn before and pulling from both ends 🤦🏻‍♀️, I won't do that again(I hope 🤭) Both yarns are pretty but I think I like the chain ply better.

Sick knitting is fun! I just never quite have the enthusiasm for the second sock, lol. Try lots of different patterns as their are many ways to do toes, heels, etc. Have fun! Thanks for watching!

I like both the chain plied and the barber pole, I guess it would depend on what you want to make it into. The sweater you were wearing at the mill is beautiful - did you make it?

I’m having a great time with the Traveler patterns, so I think your plan sounds perfect! I was just looking ahead at Black Sheep Gathering - do you think you’ll be vending anywhere this year? Also curious on your opinion on the fleece sales. As a newbie to this festival, do you find the sale only fleeces to contain some good quality, or would you say to stick to the judged fleeces? Thanks for the great podcast! -Sarah

Thank you Sarah! I don't plan on vending but will likely have the shop open on Saturday of the Black Sheep days - we're only 30 minutes south of the festival. You can find great fleeces that haven't been judged for sure but there is something nice about having the judges notes etc if you are new to buying fleeces!

I'm not a big mohair fan. Could alpaca substitute for socks.

  • @ewethfulfiber

    @ewethfulfiber

I think alpaca would work especially if the goal is to avoid the synthetic of nylon. I would aim for a higher micron alpaca with longer staple length.
