    The 44x33 sensor size is used in cameras like the Pentax 645D, 645Z, Phase One IQ150, IQ250, IQ350, Hasselblad H5D-50c, H6D-50C and of course in the mirrorless Hasselblad X1D-50c . The Leica S system is also made around a sensor of similar size. I'm not saying you are doing it, but lots of people are for some reason giving Fujifilm a bad rap for putting a 44x33 sensor in their GFX cameras, even going as far as calling them fake medium format cameras. But the cameras I've mentioned had been recognized as medium format cameras by the industry for years before Fujifilm made the GFX system, so I really don't understand why people are being so hard on Fujifilm. Especially considering the price point Fujifilm have chosen for their GFX line.

    @Phil Jones65 Well, some people argue that, but they are by definition wrong. By definition anything larger than 36x24 and smaller than 130x100 is medium format. But my point wasn't really debating wether the GFX system lives up to everyone's definition of "true medium format", but rather pointing out that the industry has recognized the 44x33 sensor size as medium format for years. Making it seem a bit like brand bashing when people are trying to ridicule Fuji for calling the GFX 50r medium format, when for instance Hasselblad is getting away with calling their H6D 50c with the same sensor, medium format. In my opinion all the ire seems even more out of place when considering that the Fuji costs $4500 and the Hasselblad costs $14 995 (Launched at $29 995). You are of course right when you say that the difference between full frame and 44x33 isn't as large as the difference from APS-C to full frame. But this doesn't mean that there is no noticable difference. While the differences are subtle, they are certainly there, and for some photographers they are absolutely worth it. And by the way, if we are to use your way of thinking about noticable differences due to sensor size, there wouldn't be any point in going from 44x33 to 54x40 either, considering there is a smaller size difference between these two, than there is between 36x24 and APS-C. In regards to pricing I don't really understand what you mean by super expensive lenses. Some of the GF glass like for instance the 110mm and the 250mm cost a fair bit of money yes, but lenses like the 63mm and the 45mm costs $1499 and $1699 respectively. Pretty comparable to high end FF glass.. Time will tell wether going APS-C and MF was a good choice or not for Fujifilm, but personally I think it's a wise decision for them to stay out of the over saturated full frame marked, at least for now. And as far as I know, their GFX line has been selling quite well so far.

    hello! nice review! i use GFX for 6 months, i found the downside from the Tethering Function. The Apps from 'Fujifilm Tether Plug in Pro' always disconect from the PC for almost around 50 minutes. it's suffer me who work professional using the tether and preview to client. Have you ever found that problem? :)

    the main advantage of medium format is the tonality from gradation the bokeh is secondary as it is often bettered in 35mm because its lenses are faster

    You forgot about the compression because longer lenses are wide angle but longer focal length which causes the bokeh yes which 35mm might have but it doesn’t compress space as much as 35mm

    Good and informative review. Thanks for putting it together. Still putting this rig through its paces (2+ months in) myself. I have to point out one thing: - “When people comment about the ‘medium format look’ all they are talking about is the depth of field....” Not the case and if anyone is considering this camera solely because of this then they should stick with full frame as the difference to them will be marginal. There is much more to it.

  • @Photogearnews

    @Photogearnews

    Hi Mark, They are Peak Design anchors. Basically the little disks slot in to corresponding locking points on a Peak Design strap. By having anchors on your cameras it means you can quickly swap straps between cameras, or just take the strap quickly on and off when needing to shoot video or use the camera on a tripod. Testing cameras I will usually have at least 2 if not 3 cameras with me, so just helps make the process of swapping between cameras easier. Hope that more than answers your question!

    Horses for courses & all that. I got to borrow one for the day & when I got the files back onto my computer I was blown away. The dynamic range is insane & you can just keep zooming in & in farther into the image. But if your not shooting commercial work, large printed landscapes or studio fashion work you'd be just as well served with an APSC camera with good lenses.

    Could we (you) please stop this nonsense about "not medium format enough"? This size sensor (heck, THIS sensor!) have been around for quite some time now, but funny (not), when Pentax, Hasselblad or Phase One used before, NO ONE called their cameras "not medium format enough". It is smaller than 6x4,5? Yes. A 645 sensor is WAY more expensive? Hell yeah! So please, Stop the BS.

  • @Photogearnews

    @Photogearnews

    5 жыл бұрын

    Not really BS more just about being relative to the size that ‘old school’ photographers will associate with medium format. That may not seem much but does have an effect to anyone working equivalent depth of field compared to say their medium format film camera and the equivalent focal length. So I’d argue it is all pretty essential information and relative, so not BS but useful knowledge for those used to shooting on MF film

    @@Photogearnews Sorry, but your response do not address any of the concerns I presented. Some parte of the YT Review community seems to have singled out Fuhifilm for daring to release affordable medium format cameras. But you dont hear the same complaints about the Hasselblad X1D or even the Pentax 645Z.

  • @Photogearnews

    @Photogearnews

    5 жыл бұрын

    Well in my previous job working for a magazine I certainly did mention that the Pentax wasn’t what we would traditionally call medium format sized. Also at absolutely no point am I being negative about the size, merely stating a fact that it is not as large as a 645, 6x6 6x7 or 6x9 frame, which I feel is important for many people to know as it has a direct correlation to how the focal length of the lenses will behave - important if you are used to shooting with a 501. We naturally equate sensor sizes to their film counterparts - (APS-C, 35mm frame), so when we talk about medium format digital cameras I think I would be a pretty bad reviewer if I didn’t mention the size of the sensor in relation to other film and digital sensor sizes

    Decent first impressions. Price, weight, bulk and image file size make this a niche cam, in my view. OK for landscape and studio where tripods are the norm, but have to disagree that this Fuji would be good for street photography. No way. Need lighter weight, smaller form factor and quick responsiveness. Like your seaside and woods images.

  • @Photogearnews

    @Photogearnews

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Paul! Yep, I know people will try and use it for street being a rangefinder, but I personally wouldn’t for the reasons you have said- hence why I was a little hesitant saying it. Another thing I didn’t mention was keeping it steady. It’s such a high resolution sensor, and the lenses I was using weren’t stabilised so you really have to rethink what you can handhold - especially as (like is said) you need to step up the depth of field a little from what you are used to with a full frame sensor camera. It was a joy to use for landscapes and really hope I get to have another play with it again soon! Thanks for taking the time to comment

    @@Photogearnews It compares pretty well to Fuji's film rangefinders though doesn't it? I mean the GW670/680/690 weigh a kilo and a half, the gfx 50r with its nearest equivalent (and removable!) lens is 1.3 kilos. If you can use a Leica to do street you can absolutely use this monster.

  • @Photogearnews

    Yes, it’s very much like those medium format film rangefinders. Personally it’s been... maybe 15 years since I used a medium format camera handheld like that (Kiev 66 - the shutter slap is like an earthquake... you have to really crank up the shutter... at least I had to). So absolutely possible to use handheld (as you can see in the woods I was shooting handheld and there is a tonne of detail) but just need to be a bit more mindful of settings. And it’s light as anything! You pick it up and expect it to weight a load more than it does, it actually feels a little less rugged because of it, though that’s just the magnesium and plastic compared to the brass and heavier metal of old

  • @jgranseth

    That obviously depends on what kind of street photography you're doing, and what kind of technique you're using.. And btw, you don't need to use a tripod with the GFX cameras, they can be handheld with great success.
