In this excerpt from a 1979 seminar, Dick provides some creativel and effective techniques to overcome what is perhaps the most common objection faced by sales professionals: "Let me think about it."

you have to confront the beast by asking the hard questions no one wants to ask. if you want clients to be direct with you and tell you yes or no and not leave you in limbo, you have to be direct with them.

I think I had the same suit then. The fashion of 1979 still favored wide ties (looks like a double windsor knot) and the waistcoat, which would soon be abandoned as the 80s rolled around when suspenders became a thing.

I think there was an unwritten rule that suspenders on suits in the 80s, were only for attorneys.

Call me a cry baby but it works. I've always told the guy "I'll think about it" cause I usually go to three or four dealerships. Every time I've walked out, I've received a follow up call within 2 or 3 hours saying the "boss" has said he's willing to come down in price. One time the guy chased after me into the parking lot. I've always paid below market value on any used car I've bought.

But none of this works because all I need to say is I want the lowest possible price and I'm going to go ask every single dealer in the area and you need to beat them. And I'm going to know everything I need to know before I even step in. So when they start with this I'm only going to be talking about the price. And I'm going to tell them another dealership that will give it to me for this and you either beat it or you don't and they have zero leverage on me nothing. The only thing stopping me is if they don't have any cars anymore or they just refuse to negotiate which has become the trend

A good salesman will cut through that. Good work isn’t cheap and cheap work isn’t good. Your probably shooting yourself in the foot if you only buy on price.

@@andrewmcleod1269 when I say the best possible price I'm referring to every possible thing not just purchase price would ultimately is what it is anyway. Also there's no such thing as a good car salesman I mean there's people that con you pretty good but I just never lose leverage in negotiation ever
