Totally disagree with you. Obviously the way this recording was engineered did not show off the beauty of his tone, but listen to the way he phrases a line. It's like he's talking. So easy, free, and intelligently thought out. He was truly a master.

Brilliant soul, one who lives on in the players who had the privilege of benefiting from his tutelage, and passed it along to the next generation of oboe players, and so on...such a pure and beautiful sound and 'voice'!!!

Marcel Tabuteau, quite simply, established and defined the American school of oboe playing. Oboists from Atlanta to Seattle emulate the tone and phrasing Tabuteau developed. Here, without ornamentation and almost without vibrato, he gives a deep, warm reading of this concerto that will stand for ages to come.

The early '50s are really the golden age of American classical world. Quite a lot of European performers and conductors gathered together in the U. S. and left a lot of superb recordings with highest level of engineering.

Thank you so much for posting this Recording! There will again be the "Dolce Tone" heard here. With the greatest respect to John de Lancie, oboe genius Marc Lifschey and many others, no one else has ever generated Tabuteau's concept of tone. One can only despair at the current travesty of oboe teaching at Curtis. Bob Kendel

I quite like this tone because of it's complexity. Whether it is bright or dark is irrelevant.

And it has complexity of expression and tone because the type of reed he used, the American long scrape style as opposed to the European short scrape harder reed style reed, which we see promoted so much lately on KZread. The European style probably projects more but the American or Philadelphia style allows for a more nuanced style of playing by the performer.

As great as his best students--named on this comment thread--were, MT was really in a class by himself musically. The Handel is performed in what we now think of as an anachronistic style, within that mode the playing, like Casals's if the Bach suites, is simply so musical as to be beyond category.

Thanks for sharing this. I own the record but have wished for a digital copy. I never liked his tone on the recording. It was brighter in person than today's American oboists, but lovely still in ways that were lost to the recording technology of the time. Regardless, the musical gestures, accuracy, and elegance continue to inspire me.

Thank you for making this performance available! Despite the limitations of the recording technology of 60 years ago, and a ponderous string section (Ormandy should have sent 70% of them home), Tabuteau's sound makes it irreplaceable. What a lightness of tone, intelligent phrasing, (like 12tone Row said), brilliant but understated. Also unadorned -- almost no trills or Baroquoid ornamentation, except what's in the score. Awesome!

Astonishing oboe playing. Each note carefully considered and realized. The crescendi and diminuendi so subtle. Even the spaces between the notes take on a life of their own. In spite of not being informed by modern understandings of Baroque musical practice (no ornaments whatsoever for example), this is one of the most deeply felt performances of this composition. The slow movement, in particular, is meltingly beautiful. (Isn't that a photo of Tabutau and Toscanini showing in the 3rd movement?)

This is the equivalent of calling out Tabuteau, Goossens, and up to a degree maybe even Holliger, for having "bad tone". The audio "back in the day" was horribly distorted (this is 1952 after all!), and obviously, musicians back then couldn't record anywhere near as well as musicians today can.
