davidhertzberg

My name is David Hertzberg. I am a retired writer and live in northern Virginia, USA. Here I share mostly unique, rare, and out-of-print LP recordings from my personal record collection of what are generally recognized to be among the greatest compositions across all genres from the early 12th through the mid-to-late 20th century. Real or perceived quality of the performance is of less importance to me than the imperative of ensuring that these recordings are brought to life and not lost to history.

KZread is regarded by scholars and researchers as a primary source archive; thus it is essential to document these musical performances with as much detail as the video format will permit, both for research purposes and to strengthen viewer confidence in the provenance and authenticity of the recording to which they are listening.

A phenomenally difficult sonata to play - especially on harpsichord, which is unforgiving of sloppy technique! Scarlatti was the mentor of Soler (in the latter's own words he was Scarlatti's disciple and most likely was one of the scribes of Queen Maria Barbara's collections of Scarlatti manuscripts). Two equally "devilish" works by Scarlatti, namely K 298 and K 299 come to mind, which are VERY pioneering in terms of keyboard technique for that time. They also require a very relaxed technique, in which (rarely for harpsichord) the entire arm is involved. No weight - rather, the complete opposite, as though someone was pressing clothing on an ironing board! Scarlatti and Soler (also, Seixas and Albéro) were geniuses <3

The last measure with the change from Ab Major back to F minor is devastating. Schubert, Goethe and Schreier…can’t get better than this!

I play this myself, am every time astonished by the fugue. Is built on 2 themes, a diatonic one and a chromatic one. Then a third theme appears and ultimately they are all 3 combined. Very inventive! This is so expertly and naturally done that Bach must have thought off all this before beginning the actual writing.

Mozart obviously paid his dues to Bach in this profoundly brilliant masterpiece of contrapuntal writing. I love this work and have performed it numerous times.

like it very much and the second motiv kicks in at the c' in measure three and the second motiv seems very hegemonial with respect to the first one... ...and one reckognizes Gould pretty fast with his signature of non-legato-playing... Le p'tit Daniel, the weather is bad ( way way too hot... ) and Gould was from Canada and he is not the only one and I want to be brought out of this mess... ...to my Canadian Princess...

There is a complete set of Sharples recordings of marches somewhere. I remember a radio station in the early 70's playing it in the mornings. I called the station and asked how to get it, and was told it was a radio station only deal. Would love to get a hold of the set. Sharples had a complete interesting set on marches, some almost unrecognizable from original scoring.

Remington records are full of surprises! Sometimes they are horrible, and other times (like this one) delightful. You're copy seems to have held up quite well given the low quality material that Don Gabor favored for pressing his records.

Shaw has an unusually intuitive feel and sharp insight into the works of Rachmaninoff. She has certainly earned my utmost respect in her choice of which harmonies and voices to bring to the fore. Her dynamics are brilliant as is her flawless technique!
