    One caveat on Mage Armor over Shield: If you're a Sorcerer with Draconic Ancestry, you'll get the effects of Mage Armor for free with your Draconic Resilience class feature, so no need to waste your selection on this spell.

  • @animusnocturnus7131

    @animusnocturnus7131

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@eddiemate True, it's a moot point however, since your allies would need to get rid of their regular armor for this spell to work, and it's only viable for high-dex characters anyway. Your run of the mill Fighter, Paladin, Cleric, and even the occasional Druid won't really profit from this spell, nor will your Barbarian or Monk. That leaves you with most Rangers, Rogues, Bards, Warlocks, Sorcerers and Wizards to support that way, but Wizards will probabbly have this spell themselves (because of course they would, it's their main source of protection!) Sorcerers will either have it themselves or some other form of protection (see my first comment), Warlocks have the option to get an at will cast of this for themselves, and Rangers, Bards, and Rogues will probabbly prefer a non-dispellable armor, and as soon as they can get their hands on a Studded Leather +1 this spell loses its merit anyway. It's a great spell to have if you don't have any other means of protection, and in a party that is build around this kind of protection (twin spelled Mage Armor to the Rogue and Ranger by the Draconic Ancestry Sorcerer for example would give a great AC boost overall) but in a regular party it's convenience is rather limited.

My sorcerer casts a Subtle Counterspell against an enemy wizard every time she can, and when the enemy looks at his hand, baffled, she says as a free action: "Sorry but... what were you doing with those movements and bla bla bla? Don't you feel a bit ridiculous? Did you sleep with the teacher to pass your exam in Invocation 1?". It is so fun to shame and ridicule the enemy.... before casting a fireball on him. Subtly.

    As someone who's playing a Sorcerer long-term right now, this guide's pretty good overall but 2 of the recommendations can be rather poor. If your character is of Draconic Bloodline (or a Dwarf) then there is absolutely no reason to take Mage Armor since it will do literally nothing, definitely take Shield instead. Also Distant Spell is terrible, take a look at Empowered Spell instead if you don't like the look of either Twinned or Quickened Spell.

    I'm DMing for my table at the moment, and one of my players (a guy with more experience than me in this arena) and I enjoy it so much that we've started playing "match-my-d20" for his Drow wizard (It's a world of my own, and the random magical spurts were his family's motivation for getting him trained, even though they didn't _quite_ raise to the level of a full fledged sorcerer. Plus, matching rolls is the same odds as rolling a predetermined number, with just _a bit_ more excitement). We're only a few fights in and it hasn't happened yet, but I found _THIS_ [ centralia.aquest.com/downloads/NLRMEv2.pdf ] online, and I am SO excited to bust it out...

    @@scw55 That's the way it's supposed to work. Technically when you cast a Sorcerer spell of level 1 or higher, your DM can make you roll a D20 and on a 1, then you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table. If you have used your Tides of Chaos feature, you forgo the d20 roll and immediately roll on the Wild Magic Surge table. BTW, I found it hilarious (for some reason) that my first Wild Magic Surge had basically no effect since I was already blue. Either no effect or it hid the fact that I'm a Drow and prevented any prejudice based on that, depending on your interpretation of the colors involved. Either way, something normally unfavorable became favorable because I was a Drow.

Divine Soul with Inflict Wounds? Walk up to two enemies, touch them both for 4d10 each using a single second level spell slot at level 3 (twinned spell costs 2 sorc points in this case) then burn your last sorc point to reroll up to 5 of those 8d10 to ensure some serious damage.

    I understand the dilemma. If your going to play a aoe nuker and want to up your damage potential careful gives you an edge as you don't have to be as selective with targets. However, subtle gives you more versatility with casting by elimanating the verbal component of the spell, handy for more stealthy and underhanded spell use. Imagine casting literally any of the illusion spells at a dinner party...Phatasmal force - x you have an intense desire to profess your undying love to the turkey roast, and will defend its honor! :P

    in earlier editions, where wizards were worse, sorcerers really shined. When you manually had to prepare 1 shield, 1 web and 1 magic missile, and your slots werent flexible. Used the shield, never again that day. Sorcerers didnt have to deal with any of that.
