Trigger warning for dark themes. About a third of this book is dedicated to mental and emotional safety at the table. @@ShadowOfADaemon Kind of like that one shot where Grog was the DM & Vex & co played other characters?
Having watched their one-shot, I think it’s worth mentioning that this overview leaves out that the game as written deals with some pretty heavy stuff. It’s possible to play a dramatic, goofy story about wacky supernatural teens and have a good time, but as written, the game can go deep into themes of sexuality, unhealthy relationships, abuse, prejudice, and so on. (For example, each of the different monster classes that aren’t even discussed in the video are based on different social dysfunctions and unhealthy relationship dynamics.) It’s a great sandbox to explore some messy feelings and watch social trainwrecks unfold, just make sure you go into the game with a group you trust, and a clear vision of what you want from it. Boundaries and comfort are incredibly important here.

As fun as that would be... not really. It's not an all-monster-school. The player characters are monsters in a high school, but they hide their true nature and pretending to be normal human kids. Also, mostly everyone else in the school is not a monster. This would be more like "self-aware Twilight" (in the sense that the characters are teens being shitty and monstrous, and the narrative is not romanticising and sugar-coating those shitty things).

Would probably be a very awkward system to run unless everyone is on the same page :P That being said though it's very nice that systems like these exist so you don't have to attempt to shoehorn mechanics for sexual undertones/encounters and teenage angst into other systems ^^ Could totally see the "playbooks" (or whatever "classes" are called in MonsterHearts) being translated to other apocalypse systems/setting as well :)
@satansgayniece6246
4 жыл бұрын
@@Micras08 Playbooks are actually much different from classes! They're more like character archetypes. Rather than just containing the skills or abilities of a character, they are written with specific themes and story elements in mind. For example, the Ghoul playbook in Monsterhearts is all about hunger (metaphorical and literal!) and being sort of emotionally dead, in addition to what kind of powers you might have as a ghoul. Playbooks are in just about every Powered by the Apocalypse (the system Monsterhearts uses) RPG.
@Micras08
4 жыл бұрын
@@satansgayniece6246 That's a fair, I was shit at getting my point across, let me try again :P My point was that if you find Monster Hearts iffy (because of the subject matter) but would like to embody one of the playbooks in say... I dunno, dungeon worlds, that would probably be doable with minimal work, because as you said; every Powered by the Apocalypse system have playbooks instead of "classes", "backgrounds" or "archetype" etc. etc. :D So your clarification was most certainly a necessary one because equating a playbook to a class is at best crude and at worst very misleading ^^ Full disclaimer: I have very little practical experience with these systems (besides reading them) seeing as my regular groups are more into d20 systems with stronger emphasis on combat Q_Q But anyways glad that my theory about playbooks being somewhat transferable within Powered by Apocalypse systems being somewhat correct - cheers for the clarification. :)
I’ve mastered this game for a year, came up with some new “skins” on my own also. It’s simple, it’s fast, it’s different. A very good game.
I’ve been playing this game for years and it’s so refreshing if you’ve been doing D&D for a while. It’s so different but so easy to pick up.

I love Handbooker Helper! Eager to see more for D&D, and other games too!
Why is it that I have seen almost all of these episodes and just now noticed the purple cloud underneath the title is Bigby's Hand? I love the attention to detail they all put in.
Great idea guys! I love this, and wish we had it for undeadwood. Telling us how the game works before you play it is a fantastic idea! Keep it up!
I literally bought monsterhearts yesterday D: so hyped
Don't forget how heavily queer-coded the game is! That's a very important aspect of it :D
Nice :) a couple things I think it's worth to stress: - There are no "skill tests" and dice rolls are not "called from the MCs" when they feel like. There are specific abstract triggers: when and only when something triggers a "Move" in the game, then the player rolls dice. - A result of 6- doesn't imply failing in the sense of "not managing to do the action the PC was trying to do". It implies "consequences are at your detriment". Sometimes precisely because you managed to do what you wanted (as in "be careful what you wish for", for example. Or perhaps you shapeshifted as the Dean's husband to ask a janitor access to a restricted area of the school and the janitor answer "of course! The dean told me you were coming, they're waiting for you there!" - A fundamental and intriguing aspect of the game, that I think should be showed in a presentation, is the Seating Chart: while creating PCs, you all choose where to sit in the classroom writing your name in a physical chart with desks, and then the MC ask you questions to create your classmates and put them in the chart. So at the beginning of the game there will be lots of NPCs with an intriguing web of love, hate, promises, secrets, lies, debts, envy, discriminations etc, intertwined in several (and conflicting) ways with the PCs and ready to explode. And that is the game (there are no quests, event happens because PCs and NPCs want things and do stuff. And it can't be stressed enough how amazing it is to start the game already knowing and being invested in your classmates.
