Hand Sewing a Victorian Coat: Gonzo Historically Accurate Cosplay from Muppets Christmas Carol

We've officially moved into new territory- the coat! Or more specifically, the tail coat. While I've done plenty of 18th century and 20th century tailoring before, this is a novel era. So, I did my research thoroughly and I am GLAD that I did. The early Victorian era is a blip on the tailoring progression, with features unlike anything before or after. I know I can make a coat in about 4 solid days if I'm just sewing, but this took me about 10! I had to stop and start repeatedly to peruse the photos of originals and books. In the end I am very pleased with the final result- just a few wrinkles around the waist that only appeared when wearing my heavier (temporary) trousers.
I am also impressed by how easy the ideal shape was acquired. I am obviously not the ideal figure of the era, so a bit of padding was added to accentuate the silhouette in some areas and hide others. By adding width to the chest area it creates a very effective illusion of both a narrower waist and a flatter chest. I can't wait to see how everything reads after I add the overcoat!
Everything for this garment was handsewn with the exception of the quilted panels in the lining. While there are some originals that appear to be hand stitched, most look like machine. As this element seems to have really come in during the 1840s, along with sewing machines in professional settings, it's not surprising that this was an early application of them. Eventually, the sewing machine would take over and coats would go from a 16.5 hour job to a 2.5 hour piece (Chicago Press and Tribune Aug 6, 1859).

Wow! The coat is gorgeous. Your attention to detail and attempt at being as accurate as possible is kind of awe inspiring, particularly when we remember that this coat will barely be seen under the overcoat! I know the final look is going to be amazing, but I’m almost sad to see this beautiful coat covered up. Please don’t feel bad if it takes longer than intended for this costume to be completed. Seeing the recreation as it very likely would have looked in 1840, and human sized is so satisfying, it’s absolutely worth the wait, aside from it being an astounding amount of work. Be well, and happy holidays!

I wouldn’t put it past the designers to have looked at photos and drawings of Charles Dickens and based their costumes for gonzo on those. There are some daguerreotypes and drawings from that 1943 time frame (when he published a Christmas Carol) where he is shown wearing single breasted coats.

First, the finished coat took my breath away! ...not sure why...but it did. Looks simple...but neat and just gorgeous! Second...I wanted to see how those pockets worked! ...like, you reaching into them. I'm loving this series. As we go, I'm realizing just how much work this is for you, Nicole. Thank you... profusely!...from our hearts!...for such as this. I'm excited for the coming videos but especially when the ensemble is complete! 🤗

Anyone else thinking "What did I just watch?", I mean, what was that 'box making, fold, not fold, cut' that happen when the tail? Skirt? half dress? was stitched together? Just me? How all this sewing turned into a coat is such a mystery to me....... It's almost magical!!!

I completely agree! I can do general sewing and repairs, but could not tackle all these pieces 😭

Spectacular work! I'm so glad you put this video out now because I'm working on a double breasted winter coat and wasn't sure if I wanted to put buttonholes all the way up the (beautifully padstitched) lapels. Now I feel justified in going ahead with it!

Tail coats are my favourite thing in fashion! There's just something about them that I find so utterly wonderful.

Sadly the 1840s were the last in which they were appropriate for the day
