Hand feeding Hummingbirds

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Purchase my hummingbird pictures here (Sugar is expensive!): bit.ly/2rI69p9
Remember, don't use the Red Dye like in the video, just 4 parts water to 1 part sugar is perfect and much cheaper!
A hand fed Hummingbird video that is amazing. Taming the Alaskan hummingbird. These hummingbirds were filmed at our lodge in Alaska, no feeder required!
Our lodge in Alaska has TONS of these little birds in the summer. Did you know their heartbeat can be as high as 1200 beats per minute! Mother nature is amazing!
These adorable hummingbirds eat right out of our hands here at the lodge. While setting up the cameras for some more handfeeding, these two little hummingbirds gave us "the shot". Though I love the hummingbirds in Alaska, The majority only arrive after migrating from Mexico, looking for feeders along the way. Sometimes I wish we lived somewhere where we could watch baby hummingbirds in their nests. Some of those videos are amazing!
NOTE: We don't use red dye anymore. We use 4:1 Water to sugar only.

my wife's father loved watching hummingbirds out of his big bay window most of his life.after his retirement thats about all he did, because of health reasons he couldnt get around much, but he loved his comfy chair, and his little hummingbirds, not very long after his retirement he passed away, and my wife was completely destroyed over it. a few weeks after his passing we were sitting in our home talking and out of the blue we had a single little hummingbird fly up to our big plate glass window and literally just hover. looking in at us. we had no feeders or have ever seen any hummingbirds at our home. we feel it was a sign to my wife that all was going to be alright. now we cant wait to put our feeders out.and enjoy these awesome little creatures.

that happened to my husband too. His father was an avid Eagle watcher. After he passed my husband saw an Eagle perched in a tree branch on his way home. He pulled over and walked right up under the tree and the Eagle stayed there for 20 minutes. It was an area that eagles do not frequent, so very eerie.

yup! They are SUPER ATTRACTED to RED COLOR ... (however using red food color harms their health! Careful!) I was blessed enough to take care of a blue-throated humming bird whose wing got injured ... now he sits on my finger, waits to be fed, super sweet and smart little guy with a strong will to live practicing flying here and there ... I cant wait to release him when his wing gets okay!

yeah, its been a week since I found him in the garage with one wing stretched unable to fold it ... now he is much better, flies here and there, but with difficulties and keeps falling down, so I run all over the place and keep catching him :-) I think he knows I am doing my best for him so he cooperates ... amazing species this is!!!! A blessing and a dream come trough for me to be so so so close to such fantastic species ... and I cant wait to release him soon so he can fly home and be free :-)

I bought a brand called Homestead that is red - is the red color in the 'brands' you buy bad for them too, or just standard home baking food coloring? I would never add the latter, but the Homestead is already red, and does seem to be the one they like the most (it has vitamins minerals and calcium to help them build their shells, (and to keep them from going near the risky ground to eat dirt etc. as they are known to do, to gain calcium in their diet) I sure wish I could get them to share better!

Robert, I dont know if that is not suitable to their health either, however, its super easy to make just water based nectar. I used information from the ornithologist - purified water (not tap water, may contain chemicals or bacterias - not good for them either) and WHITE sugar (not brown, no honey, no melasa - the problem here is when you dilute it with water it starts growing bacteria that is fatal for hummingbirds) thats it, purified water and white sugar. They also sell reddish feeders so they still are attracted. However, my little fella who is recovering got used to the taste not to the color, now he searches for transparent glass I was feeding him from, because he could not fly ... Well, now I am bringing more red flowers from the garden so he knows what to do when he is free again :-) And now I am off to catch a small fly for him as well because they need protein as well ... :-)

Christian Gainey Nice idea, but I have an aversion to the introduction of non-native species artificially. They tend to wreak havoc to the local ecosystem. Witness Grey squires in the UK (Decimated Red squirrels with squirrel pox) or the cane toad, camel and rabbit in Australia. Plus I doubt the would survive our winters given they are normally about 3 hours from starving to death.

  • @JohnKSellers

I reposted this comment to spread the word which will help hummingbirds: NEW DISCOVER! I found something really good for the hummingbirds. I have the kind of feeder when you can take apart the base and clean inside. That is the ONLY kind to get. For years I have carefully cleaned the feeder when adding fresh sugar water. BUT this last time to my horror I noticed for the first time that black mode was collecting inside the nipples. I thought I was doing a perfect job of cleaning the feeders, but I had entirely missed this for years. So I got some extra large pipe stem cleaners. I removed and cleaned the yellow flowers mounted on the nipples, and used a pipe stem cleaner with soap and water and ran it through the hole in the flower. Also, I repeated the process by running the pipe cleaner through the holes in the nipples on the red base. These were even dirtier with black mold gathering around the insides of the nipples. The change certainly turned out well! When I finished cleaning the feeders and put them out again, I watched the reaction of the first two visitors. I can tell how much the birds like the sugar water by how many sips they take. I know it is time to change them when they start taking fewer sips each trip. Well, the first two visitors both broke the previous record which was 22 sips for a visit just after setting out a freshly clean feeder. My first visitor to the feeder with the cleaned nipples took 31 sips and then my second visitor took 37 sips!! Those are really surprising records! They clearly really liked the freshly cleaned nipples on the feeder! I was really happy I was able to make their meals nicer.... chuckle.

it is, you just have to be patient. I learned this when I was about 9, I was in our garden sitting by some flowers and watching the hummingbirds and I noticed they weren't scared, so I put my hand below the flowers they were drinking from and sat very very still and eventually, they started perching on my finger. It was soooo amazing. That was 50 years ago and I still love them.
