Ray really was a badass throughout this film. He supported Hancock when pretty much everyone else hated him. He was willing to work through a ton of issues with Hancock for months. Then after it was revealed that his own wife is the literal soul mate for Hancock, and that she and Hancock are actually DESIGNED to love each other till death, he doesn't really hesitate and still fully loves her. Ray was even willing to attack an armed criminal to defend Hancock, who was recovering from a gunshot. For a completely normal guy with absolutely no training or previous experience with anything heroic, the man is a genuine badass.
