Hanbon Forge Custom Katana

The sword is satisfactory at best, Not enough care was put into making this sword. My expectations for this katana were high but I was left disappointed but content with the customer service and refund support..All and all a good looking piece but could have been better. There are other Custom sword companies that produce better quality pieces

    As an addendum to my prior comment, I did some double-checking and the 1095 clay tempered blade (what I intend to get on my HF wakizashi if I like my Katana from them) if no other extras are wanted is now about $260. The base price for an HF blade of 1060 is currently $97. From Sons of Northshire it's $189. But if somebody wants the 1095 clay tempered from either one of those places, from HF it's a $105 add-on. BUT from SoN it's a $250 add-on. So either SoN is crazy overpriced, or HF is not putting out what they say they are putting out for their price... which might explain the problem you had sharpening your blade.

  • @JoeSteel1

    @JoeSteel1

    Might be true on both counts...Son are good, but can be over priced...not sure the quality of the temper I got from Hanbon not to say they are all bad though

    I believe I have the same sword but not identical in every respect. You are correct, the customer service was very good, verging on excellent. Did you watch your sword transport process as I did? China has made Katina and other swords for centuries. It's a business now and less an art vice Japan.

  • @JoeSteel1

    @JoeSteel1

    Without a doubt they support the customer before and after purchase, If we are talking about region history China has been making all forms of weaponry for thousands of years, actually many aspects of the katana came from the Chinese sword designs, but true that in China katana are a huge business, in Japan, yes the families that still produce they make a living but it is and always has been an expression of Art and Traditions passed on for ages and generations...thanks for watching

    1095 is very hard, this brittle. I would've used a soft whetstone, or careful work with a natural bench hone rather than ceramic rods. Hopefully your blade cleaned up decently, were you able to get it as sharp as you wanted? I just put in a custom order from Hanbon for a similar blade (1095, clay hardened). We'll see what comes back.

    You are very correct, if you specify what you want you will be sure of what you get.... I’m a little older so when I buy a sword it’s like a car... not how many cup holders or leather seats, it’s the chassis and drive train. an example would be cheness forge, I bought three from them and all of the parts have had some type of catastrophic failure, but the steel was what I wanted and for the price it was good, (of course I could have saved a little w/ just the blade).....as for Hanbon, Yao is the person you will deal w/ he speaks English well and was very careful to be sure our communications were understood....I was very pleased...they are shirasaya style (stick style) so I cannot speak on any fittings, wich I know many are interested in, I can say it fit well and they have great balance, I have not tried any tameshigiri (cutting), later ....I have used about 500 times in my katas and they show no change, I did my first speed trest when I first got them, (not plugging myself w/ this link, I don’t care about views just If anyone would like to see one in use(practice that is), kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXiBuLxuZLebqMY.html ).... also I did some checking on Hanbon as they had what I was looking for, I found some negative work done on them, all debunked and/or just unfounded, some even seemed a little nefarious.... it was a pleasure to deal w/ Yao, (I am not connected w/ Hanbon other than my purchases).....I don’t usually and comments like this, I hope it was helpful....

  • @JoeSteel1

    @JoeSteel1

    Yes I got no Ill feelings for Yao he was good to deal with, I take some of the blame( not being that experienced in ordering custom swords at the time) not specifying my preferences...But I just wasn't happy with the quality of the steel, dont think it was tempered right...and the end cap(kashira) should NOT have been loose that really annoys me as to fix that it would have to be totally un tied...Still though a pretty Katana that can cut...might sell it once I get the edge to where it should be...Thanks for the comments and the view

    Greetings from Orange County California. Thank you very much for your review. I was going to order from Swords of Northshire, but upon reaching checkout I discovered they did not take PayPal ( I need to use PayPal credit as my mad money to make this purchase). And then I have not had the great customer service experience that everybody keeps talking about with "Bryce" at SoN. He wasn't rude or anything but but getting back to me with my inquiries about customization has just not been a thing. Plus, in one email where he did get back to me he said SoN does not take Paypal because PayPal does not allow you to buy swords. Well, somebody forgot to tell that to the other half-dozen of the major suppliers of katana out there. I'm now looking at HanBon Forge and others. And, per your suggestion in the video, prior to watching your video, I have been researching the S out of this stuff the last month or so.... which brings me to the point you made about your blade. Everything I wanted with my blade from HanBon would be

    @@JoeSteel1 Well bit the bullet a couple of days ago and ordered my custom sword from HF, although I did not go through the website. Dealt with what Yao directly through theur sales email, same with sending the payment. Had quite a few back and forth emails with Yao including sending him photographs and diagrams of how I want certain things done on the sword so there "shouldn't" be any problem with that. They said they would send a photo of it ahead of time for approval before they ship it so that's good. Ended up costing me $277, which is $150 cheaper than the same thing I wanted through Swords of Northshire. So 35% less. Still think there might be something deficient about that their "9260" blade for the price. Unfortunately, short of it being made out of aluminum, I wouldn't really know how to tell much of a difference. Anyway, here's hoping. Now here's hoping I don't get 35% less sword.

    Essentially they use the same parts bins, websites look similar with similar swords, SON has an affiliate in the states, with American speaking contacts for business here, what you are paying extra for is better customer service and in some respects better QC, that and having the company do business in states will also make them more expensive, that level of quality might be worth more to you, but I know Hanbon also has stood by their products with replacements if needed, there are some exclusive items each may have and service offered, but in the end that is the major difference, depending if that is worth something to you, hope that answers your inquiry...note people have pretty happy with SON swords as well as hanbon...from what I've seen they are two pretty good custum parts build companies, SON just with a better reputation
