I can vouch for Hanbon forge. They are a very good forge who stand by their products. You can't go wrong ordering from them. I ordered the Zaitoichi shikmizue. The price was very reasonable and the custom blade lovely. It has a 1095 carbon steel blade. Strong enough to go through bone, bamboo, and wire easily. The handling and feel of the blade is very comfortable and easy to cut with. They also will stand by their products. I highly recommend Hanbon forge!

I just got a hanbon wakizashi and the fit and finish is awesome, tight wrap, smooth transitions, awesome ray skin (even some emperor nodes) cuts like a demon,..I’m very impressed with it.

Good to know Hanbon is putting out some decent products. I've read alot of bad thing about them. More bad than good. Yeah, I have only one katana with red cotton ito from Sinosword and it is the exact same hue as yours. But in the pic on their website it was shown as a dark blood red. So there was a bit of disappointment there. If I had to do over again (red ito) I would definitely get the synthetic silk or the leather.

Hello do you know if swords of north shire are better quality, then Hanbon swords Both of the sword companies use Long Quan China. The swords on Hanbon are cheaper 30% to 50% around. does swords north shire just mark up the price for the same thing ?

(See addition to this comment below) I'm hoping mine works out. Especially when I compare them to the pricing at Swords of Northshire. I threw a lot of odds and ends in my custom order: 9260 Steel; BoHi starting 3 cm above Habaki; And probably the most important, yet most confusing, was a certain image etched into the blade ( nothing fancy, just the foot of a certain animal. ) along with some written engraving in Japanese and English, saying the same thing on each side of the blade. All that for $277... including shipping from China to California. SoN wanted $427 for the same thing. When you go on their respective websites you see that SoN start out with their basic 1060 blade $90 more then HF. $97 vs $189. And if you want a 1095 clay tempered blade, HF wants $105 above their base price of $97 = $202. But SoN wants $250 ( ! ! ) above their base price of $189 = $439. Very big difference ($237) for 1095 clay tempered between the two. In my case, ordering the 9260 steal from HF, it was 97 + 55 = $152. From SoN that would have been $189 + $90 = $279. Another big difference. So you have to wonder, with such disparity in the pricing, what is going on? I mean $189 for a basic blade, plus the standard "customized" fittings", you can kind of understand. But $97? So now I have to wonder if I was Pennywise and Pound-foolish ordering from Hanbon. Will the pool noodles in my area be forever safe because all I will have is a crappy blade that's little more than a nice-looking wall hanger? Because if you don't make any of the special requests that I made, for the (supposedly) higher grade blade steel and engraving and such, one's blade from HF will be $97 (as of this posting) OR, are SoN blades crazily overpriced? I don't know. Does anyone else?

From what I’m aware of is that SoN has a lot of higher prices than other sources from the Longquan area where most Chinese smiths for these swords seem to be.

Additional comment 2 years later: I've been with HBF now since April of 2021. I now have 11 swords from them and they are finishing up number 12. These involve a number of custom orders and steel types. I'm really very pleased with them as a budget sword company and their buffet style features menus which allow you to upgrade your sword as much or as little as you want in any particular area that you like.
