It's probably because Japanese horror often focuses on the psychological type of horror, while most of the world just sets on putting you in a situation with scary monsters, Japanese and psychological horror in general purposefully messes with your senses while at the same time keeping up with disturbing imagery or situations, which don't necessarily have to include monsters like we see here

For me, it's the cultural differences. That's why I like foreign folklore and urban legends in general, but especially from slavic and more eastern countries. (I'm from Austria.) They're so outlandish and weird, which is exactly what makes good horror to me. The monsters are usually more interesting as well. (Unless it's another long-haired ghost girl.) When I first watched Dread Out, I found the monsters to be really interesting. I was actually trying to get into Austrian folklore but it's hard to find anything for some reason. I know that it exists, because we've read stuff like Der Basilisk in der Schönlaterngasse in school.

Yup, I was also amazed and utterly terrified by the impeccable rushing/ravaging animation the authors did for Hanako in this fight. She really projects absolute terror. No AAA game shit, just good ol' fucking design.

A lot more forgiving than the other games. You can repel the enemies, you get a tutorial, you don’t need to squirrel away a boatload of resources in a “safe” room because your inventory space is so small

This is an exceptionally great horror game. The monster designs are creative and horrifying. The only thing that takes away some danger is the light-combat, but that´s only to those that are good with horror anyway. Kinda hope John Wolfe would play this.

It's their mythos and urban legends. Loch Ness, Bigfoot, and Slender Man are probs weird to them too.

Why does the mirror require battery power?

Yeah, do you mind walking or stomping a bit louder, please? I wanna make sure the ghosts can actually hear me. Sheesh! 🙄

I respect this one for being one of the few that actually resembles a “game”. Especially a survival horror one. It has an inventory system, you do things other than just walk around listening to exposition, reading memos for world building, walking and............walking. You fight/fend off enemies instead of being forced to speed walk away from them in a loop. You have a variety of enemies to fend off against instead of just one ghost stalking you endless in a ripoff of PT. You have health and have to actually survive, not walk through a giant cutscene until the credits roll.
