You are 100% right . Even though I have been in shaikh hamza Yusuf’s lectures a lot and I respect him so much but here once again we all witnessed his humbleness and patience. If she didn’t ask or act the way she did or what she asked shaykh hamza wouldn’t even talk about it from his point of view . Everything happens for a reason . She showed who she is and what her views are and helped us appreciate who we are learning the religion from .

Thats how our scholars judged people , according to what is agreed upon to be guided in our deen ! So without even know what he beliefes you doubt his guidance , which is between him and Allah.

My respect for Shaykh has increased by listening to his answer. Every word emitted his sincerity.

I was fortunate to have the chance of seeing him in Malaysia just a couple of months prior to his appointment as a member of the Commission on Unalienable Rights. He was such a beautiful man, in every aspect. A man with knowledge and adab. Oh dear, It hurts me to see someone talking to him like that.

Aslam S. None of that is mandatory. The Hijab is ordered by God in An Noor verse 31. Allah says in the Quran whoever does not judge by what Allah and His messenger revealed is a disbeliever.

There are still this need to administer our worldly necessities and affairs and when it comes to collective objectives, it is only sensible to have someone who is good to be a representative of the community, and in this case, I deem Shaikh Hamza as a good candidate. We're on our own in the day of hisāb but while we’re still in this world, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w taught us to stick together and strengthen each other. That is the way of the prophet.

I pray to God that He protects this great man. We have so few of them today, that it's just sad. I thank God for blessing us with the honor of listening to this man.

The lecture was titled ‘Rules of Engagement’ and sheikh Hamza Yusuf demonstrated it these rules in his response to the lady! He really embodies Islamic manner! I pray that Allah bless him for being such a beautiful example for us to see and follow.

That lady was too emotional and not logical what a great response from shaykh Hamza Yusuf.

Beautiful answer sister...i have recently heard a lecture of Nouman ali khan in which he was explaining the incident which has taken palce when hazrat khola came to Rasul Allah SAW about complaining her husband.. At that time she was stressful she raised her voice and puts arguments but when Allah gave revelation Allah did't talk about the women being disrespectful intead he ignores nor even prophet SAW complain and ALLAH and his prophet SAW taught us a lesson there that sometimes its ok if people are stressful if they gets overboard dont get mad relax gave them some margin and have patience indeed you will also be rewarded being patient.. Here if our sister done some mistake we shouldn't be focussing on her behavior rather her condition ..sorry for such long note and for my english.. But after reading your comment i got influenced..

Yes the woman seems upset and a little emotional but I don't think she was totally disrespectful and she wasn't yelling, just passionate. The sheikh gave a great response and displayed knowledge of our deen to back up his position. I just wish he would have spared her the criticisms, but it's just because I feel bad about the backlash she must have received. Like he says the Qur'an says work together so why not forgive her and understand what she is trying to say? May Allah bless Sheikh Hamza Yusuf and continue to guide him, and the same for the woman and all of us. Ameen.

Brother Hamza Yusuf has such a wonderful blend of humility and open minded reasoning that is replete with profound scholarly knowledge. Hamza doesn't strike me as one who needs publicity to live Islam and espouse the virtues of Muslim unity that is powerful enough to bring global recognition of ALLAH'S Power, Mercy and Compassion. He and the panel are servants of ALLAH. They struggle to perfect their practice of Islam and hope we will join them. The true leaders of Muslims are The Quran and the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), not uncontrolled emotionalism and egotistical ambitions.

SubhanAllah. May ALLAH SWT preserves and increases Shaykh Hamza.

Mā syāʾ-llāh. He really gave an example to us all on how to respond to a provoking question/situation. Gentle and kind yet humble. And we could tell that this is the man whose actions are based on knowledge of what Prophet Muhammad ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-ʾālihī wa-sallam taught us. And responding to any kind of situation calmly and kindly are really helping us to deal with it with no results of damage. It is truly a good reminder for me. Jazakallahu khair for posting this. Islam is indeed peace. Subhanallah.

It must be draining to ascend in your spirituality and have to deal with ppl that are limited in their spirituality and only want to put you in a box of ennemy or ally. And yet treat them with respect and compassion. Mashallah, thats another level of hardship. But thats part of this abode, 3adab douniya... Kher inshallah.

Ma Sha ALLAH my two favorite present day Scholars Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Sheikh Imran Hosein. I was a bit confused but you don't condemn people until you know their motive. Even when Sheikh Imran Hosein was asked about Hamza Yusuf joining the Trump administration he didn't condemn him. He just said 'It's sad but we don't know may Allah increases his blessings' No offence but if you want to condemn him on Muslim principles at least dress like a Muslim woman Hijab and all the other attire. In my opinion, Hamza is one of the best sheikhs we have these days. I think he is veracious , direct and uncomplicated. I have been following him almost 20 years and he has never disappointed me. Hamza can represent me and my family anytime it is an honor. He is very wise and we should trust him. I think this sister who is shouting to the sheikh has different agenda. Must of the time Our aulima meet Munafiqiin, which I am not saying that this woman is munaafiq. May Allah give us saber.

I love Sheikh Hamza Yusuf, I've been listening to his material for a long time and I really admire many of his views. But I think that he is wrong in using those Hadiths in this situation, I even doubt their authenticity. I don't think it's fair for us Muslims to be constantly seeing our sheikhs trying to apply "political hadiths" from 1400 years ago in our time, it's simply wrong. Saying that "don't curse those in power because God put them over you" is absurd, it doesn't work like that, and one minute later he said "it's a free country, THANK GOD, people can protest their government..." I mean you can either believe that God put them over you and then you go and have patience or do something about it but you can't have both. This idea that it's Qadar to have this corrupt kaliph is what started this whole political/religious mess in the Muslim world from Muawia's day to this minute.

This is true. There where no princes in arabia at the time of the prophet. These hadiths are forged by the ruling class after the death of the prophet to stop people from questioning authority. Im glad you noticed.

Honestly, Reda, I think you haven't grasped the level of intellectuality of Hamza Yusuf by rising your inconsistency objection, you are seeing in his discourse. The reality is that we will disagree in such things, but Sheikh Hamza is more concerned about the inward experience of Muslims and their metaphysical worldview which is more and more affected by the positivist/atheistic worldview because if the only what is count is the outworld "good" life then it is not difficult to argue that atheistic hedonism is the only philosophy that makes sense as teleology. His commitment to the tradition is part of his philosophical check upon this inward experience. I am sure he will be glad if you challenge his opinion regarding the authenticity of hadiths or their utility but he only wants you to not compromise on the metaphysical dimension in your thinking process (your ijtihad basically).

I agree. Even Omar said to his people when he was caliph “if I am righteous, then support me, if I become unjust, then oppose me”. I don’t know how you can be clearer than that and I don’t know how you can be against the principle of a man who was so dearly close to the prophet sawas.

This is a man who has spent over 40 odd years travelling and gaining knowledge, those who cast aspersions on his character will have to answer to Allah on yawm Al qiyaama...
