Hammerhead Shark at Miramar Beach in Destin, FL 8/5/2013

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Took this footage of a Hammerhead Shark that was casually swimming in the shallows along Miramar Beach in Destin, FL on 8/5/2013. Hammerheads can be one of the most aggressive types of sharks, but this one displayed no aggression in spite of the large number of spectators and the kayakers attempting to coax him/her away from the beach and out to deeper water. Based on the length of the Kayaks I estimate the shark was about a 10 foot long juvenile. I believe the shark was actually sun bathing in the calm shallow water. Sharks like the sun on occasion and can actually tan, but they must continue to move so that air will pass through their gills and they can breathe.

There was a 0.00000001% chance of that shark going after anyone. It's looking for rays in the warm sand. I have great respect for these people. They allowed the shark to be a shark, and they retained a congenial level of curiosity. No childish screaming. Very cool.

The shark is thinking: "Wow, I seem to have swum to a beach full of wankers, maybe I should go somewhere better and find something to eat that will not poison me." There is a reason they have been on earth longer than us.

@@christinaf713 well it's very ignorant for them to just stand there. If they got bit, then most likely a "shark hunt" would start, and the shark would be killed so it didn't repeat the act again. Gee what a terrible outcome for a creature to suffer just because humans were in his home acting careless.

Honestly, the water is usually close to that. I live down the road in Panama City, and emerald green to blue to clear, it's close :) I have seen 0 vis to 100+ vis. Depends on storms, time of year and so on. By the way, these little Hammers won't hurt a soul, anymore then spinners/black tips. I watch for the Tigers/Bulls as those get my attention. Still more worried about the barracudas when diving then sharks.

Visually to a shark, were an unusual object, hence test bites. Aside from bull sharks, and tiger sharks which have more of a propensity to attack us, were just not prey items. We dont put off the same electrical signals, we dont visually stimulate the predator response.

They are shallow water sharks, using their funny looking heads to pick up electrical impulses given off by buried fish. They have a typically small mouth and aren't known for attacking humans. The one in this video isn't any more than 6 feet long, and as said below, a young one. The reason they are feared is mainly because they look so different ~ like any wild animals, they all should be given plenty of space . If you readers had any idea of the number of sharks swimming in and amongst the beach-goers, I doubt you would venture back in the water. Bull Sharks are by far the baddest sharks out there, they far out-number any others we have around here, and they are known for swimming up fresh water rivers to bear young.

Hammerheads are not one of the most aggressive types of sharks, they are actually one of the most docile with less than 20 known attacks in the last 300 years, with only two fatalities spread over all species of the hammerheads. Also, that looks like a scalloped hammerhead, and the only "attacks" they've ever committed are exploratory bites.

They did the correct thing. Face the shark and stand still. The ignorant people are the ones saying they should swim out immediately. Splashing and putting your back to it is the last thing you should do.

+Kaydie Cope They make the top ten list. A juvenile is less aggressive, and there are different kinds of hammers. The "Great Hammerhead Shark" can reach 20 feet, and is highly aggressive.

That shark was for sure NOT 10ft long.......didnt even look close. And just fyi hammerhead sharks are not very agressive. Actually there are only 17 recorded attacks from hammerheads and no fatal attacks recored. This information was found on the Florida Museum of Natural history and the it is from 1580 to present time. Sharks are not an animal we need to fear. We must respect them when we enter there domain but at the same time we must know that sharks are not out to hunt humans. Everytime I have seen a shark while surfing it has swam away from me becuase it was scared. Sharks are very misunderstood animals. When attacks happen they are usually in murky waters where the sharks cannot see very well.
