Psychedelics are the reason why i didn’t take my life when i was at my end. I was stripped of my ego and saw the beauty of life and interconnectivity and even though i still battle anxiety and depression, I’m doing better everyday and will never think in such a self destructive way again.

LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. Now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before."

I think the stuff Terence talked about is a little more airy fairy which more people can understand whereas Dennis is more pragmatic and hardcore science which is not as accessible to most people. The average person interested in this stuff is going to be more drawn to hearing about stoned apes than hearing about 5-HT2A receptor tagging with I-125 radio-labeled DOI

@@shafthespaceegg Uh, everything you just said is essentially, completely backwards. Your assertion here is actually quite bizarre. Loads of people who can still probably be categorized as "laymen" do certainly want to hear about and/or are interested in hearing about the neural pharmacodynamic details and how exactly the alkaloids are working their wiles on the 5HT2a target receptor, which is what manifests the experience in the first place... In fact, discussing simple neural correlates or target receptors when hardly anyone still even has any idea what the molecules are really truly doing there at the receptors beyond just 'agonizing' at the bond site would still probably be easier to understand and follow than trying to grasp the broad tenets of evolutionary biology with additional epigenetic and/or mutagenic angles to cover as it relates to the concept of drugs intervening in the evolutionary history of human beings theoretically. What I think you perhaps meant to say (?) or what would have at least made some note of your point would be how a less technical viewer would probably be more interested in and find greater solace in focusing on Terence describe the *phenomenology* of the thing rather than just an alternative scientific hypothesis relating to early hominid encephalization instead of a discussion about the keynote target receptors or something, even though they both seem fairly equal in their basic technical gradience. They also are basically both crossing over talking about the same thing.. Isn't the whole *thing* about the stoned ape model the fact that the part of the brain that underwent this accelerated and major change in such a short period of time (the neocortex) is absolutely covered in 5H2Ta receptors. Dennis was/is just about as "airy fairy" as Terence was. Terence was by no means some kind of anti-scientific person or force, and Dennis still observably concedes to virtually all of Terence's main points about the phenomenological 'airy fairy' stuff as well. Because they pretty much came to these conclusions about the phenomenology of psychedelic tryptamines together, in Colombia in that 3/4 week period in 1971. Terence only came to these conclusions in the first place by trading notes with others and gradually picking up on the underlying archetypal schema implicit within these experiences induced by plant and fungi-based hallucinogens. Terence was just focusing on and/or mastering the art of hermeneutic phenomenology so that he could be as accurate and as exegetical as possible in his breaking down and general overall assessment of the intersubjective motifs and thematic layering demonstrated by these natural hallucinogens. And thanks to Terence (with the help of his brother), we now have relatively modest and concise, but still hauntingly accurate "maps" or layouts (at least preliminary) of the "psilocybin mushroom space" and the "ayahuasca space" as it relates to their recurring and intersubjective archetypes and the implicit schemes relating to the analytical concept in psychology and philosophy of the mind known as 'aboutness'. This is a majorly important aspect of the work they contributed, with modern psychonauts still building on top of it today and extending its details. And if we as humans ought to be hermeneutical about *anything* for Christ sake.. like anything at all, of course it should be with plants/fungi/nature instead of some anthropogenic, overly-pedestrian piece of "wisdom literature" if we're really looking for some kind of 'fingerprints from the Gods' left behind or any sign of anything theurgic or numinous to interpret and analyze. If such breadcrumbs are left behind, it's clearly going to be present in nature, organically in the global biome if it's going to be anywhere. And I say this as someone whose borderline obsessed with books. Either way, the phenomenological analysis and hermeneutical approach Terence utilized was very important and one of the most useful, for example when studying history/anthropology.
Really interesting, and so refreshing to hear an interview with a scientist who also talks about his flaws and his missteps - so many scientists interviewed have massive egos and always do "perfect research". Good to see some humility. Great job both.

His voice and way of talking is as soothing as his brothers. Legends, both of them
As a teen growing mushrooms around 2003 I heard all sorts of bullshit about mushrooms by people who had never read a single thing about them. "These mushrooms are Spore injected" - translation: these people thought that someone was injecting spores into the mushrooms to make them more potent. Somehow the heard of or saw a "spore syringe" then they made up the rest. Also "gold flakes" in the bag being a sign of good mushrooms. My interpretation: These people are eating vermiculite. "All you have to do is put horse shit in a shoebox in your closet. Bam! Mushrooms."
I think at 1:10:00 he officially passed the torch to Morris. I'm tempted to quote Spiderman's uncle here.

Thanks for making this information available Hamilton. I've always wanted to know more about chemistry but in the past it seemed like unobtainable knowledge. At 34yrs old Im now seriously considering going back to college to learn some basic chemistry skills and begin doing exactly what Dennis Mckenna was doing....Isolating compounds from biological matter and finding out how they interact with the human body. There are many many plants that have already been studied for decades yet still have huge gaps of information about their total chemical constitutes. I currently work as a telecom network engineer but I would love to setup a basic lab at home to start experimenting.

I’m 29 and I’m back in school studying chemistry. It’s not as glorious as watching videos makes it sound. It’ll be at least a year of basic chemistry, balancing equations, calculating shit, etc before you get into the organic chemistry. It’s interesting for sure, but challenging and you won’t be learning about drugs for a bit.
36:00 Dennis is the most loveable boomer! His voice actually reminds me of my grandfather who passed away at 96 earlier this year, it brings back nice memories. I've always loved Dennis but realising this makes him even more special to me Bit of a different subject matter than what my grandfather used to talk about though!
*Dennis is the true discoverer of Salvinorin A's binding to the Kappa Opioid Receptor. Crazy what these two brothers have done for the Psychedelic movement. They also made Psilocybin easily available and well-known, and much more.*
So lucky to get to speak to Dennis, he seems like such a genuine down to earth person, he's just as fascinating and engaging as his brother in my opinion, only more grounded hahaha

Hamilton is always so erudite. Yes, Mckenna spoke poetry. Hamilton always speaks the truth about it.
@Ryan88881
4 ай бұрын
LOL there is absolutely nothing about Hamilton that is even beginning to *approach* what could be legitimately considered or seen as being 'eruditely'. All you're doing by positing a statement like that is just demonstrating that you don't know what that word actually means. If you assess the noetic dynamics of Hamilton and come-away thinking "erudite" then you obviously don't know what erudite means bahaha. If anything, he's actually a rather good/typical example of someone who *isn't* eruditely because Hamilton doesn't, at least give off the impression or exert much of.. well, anything in the way of evidence to suggest that he's particularly knowledgable on topics outside his somewhat broad but still technically circumscribed area of speciality (neurobiology and psychopharmacology). A Erudite isn't someone who's simply a bookworm or just some.. Chess club type or whatever direction your thinking was drifting towards. I would guess you've never actually seen the word erudite properly used in context as that would be the only somewhat reasoned explanation for you labeling Hamilton as a "erudite" as you *literally* and simultaneously compare him to one of the most exemplary and characteristic examples of a true historical erudite like Terence McKenna.. like is this all just supposed to be part of some joke or something? Because the degree of faultiness in understanding could pass for satire honestly. But alas, the part where you actually, really kind of break the stupid meter is in that last sentence there. I mean.. what the actual **** is that supposed to mean lol.. Hamilton 'speaks the truth'? So Hamilton magically just has alethiological astuteness and authority now? How's that? Also did he just skip epistemology outright and go straight to the bare, naked ontological truth and the non-tentative modalities of aletheia? Circumventing 'knowledge' and going straight to bare-assed, alethical 'truth' huh? ... I mean, are you even following or even know anything about these other separate disciplinary fields that you keep evoking? What is so "truthful" or even exceptionally pedagogical about the majority of what Hamilton says anyways? He didn't even understand what makes cacao/theobromine unique and interesting when it came up on JRE and (from what I recall; on that same podcast) didn't have, fairly basic cultivated understanding about why mescaline-containing cacti for instance are regraded as having an 'elderly' presence and blah blah which.. normally I wouldn't have much of a problem with but at the same time.. that's literally your job. You have one job dude, one main job. But you can't claim to or (through allusion) present yourself as some "drug nerd" or bookish autodidact participating in the fields of neurobiochemistry and yet not have some still fairly basic stuff not nailed-down yet, such as may relate to the socio-anthropological etiologies and reasons for certain characteristic and specific customs pertaining to drugs and/or their ritualizations. He doesn't really exemplify a polymathic or 'teacher/professor' type vibe like McKenna clearly does either. Switch the names and your comment actually seems coherent and sensible.

The sense of community that I earned on the hive is extraordinary. I cannot stress enough just how important of a time place and action the website the hive was. People from all walks of life who are interested in clandestine chemistry were able to share stories and it was not just simple it was such a complex snapshot of what a clandestine chemist is and what that lifestyle looks like. I always felt like I was serving the unwashed masses when I left the hive and it always seemed like a Oasis in the desert of that lifestyle.

So thrilled to hear you discuss 5HT downregulation & upregulation in this lecture. I have no ill will towards SSRIs, I have seen them help others, and myself, tremendously… but they undoubtedly Lose efficacy over time due to the downregulation you mention. I’ve been having trouble finding what -if any- understanding had been reached on receptor regulation as it pertains to 5HT agonist psychedelics, love the answer that it upregulates transporters. A legend in the making interviewing an established legend. I'm only a few minutes in but your stuff on 5-meo-dmt - as well as the wealth of knowledge in the DMT-Nexus on the molecule - is especially interesting. Many try mushrooms for example, and never get the mystical experience. 5-meo-dmt seems like it doesn't leave much room for toe dipping, but reliably provides something perhaps more effective for mental health than the mystical experience.
@hugevibez
Жыл бұрын
Actually through nasal administration 5-Meo-DMT provides a more traditional and colorful psychedelic experience IME (though definitely still unique and "grand" feeling if that makes sense), though ymmv of course and I do not encourage anyone to try this route given how little is known about it and the extra risk involved with the roi in general. Though it is definitely psychoactive this way as opposed to n,n-DMT. At the time I was unaware that you could simply use sodium bicarb to freebase the salt, which is what I had, so that was my only option available and my experience contrasted with all I had read on the 5-Meo-DMT experience. Others have later corroborated this differences between administration routes.
I wish psychedelics were more readily available, safely for the whole world.

@Ewr42
2 жыл бұрын
On Ayahuasca you do get a truly impressive insight into other people's minds, you see what they're saying so clearly, and you see stuff they can't see even, you don't get a direct connection to anyone's brain, ofc, but your intuition gets to a level that's so high, that you can simulate a seemingly very real experience for that person in that moment, it's a level of empathy really deep, it's all ofc your brain's best guess/interpretation, but it takes into account the tiniest of tone differences and word choices, facial expressions and all that You feel like you are the other person, idk But you can really see when someone isn't listening to you, misinterprets what someone else says and just every single detail Even brain to brain communication can appear to happen, but it's a misinterpretation of effective non verbal communication through micro cues, I think I don't think there's anything mystical behind it, it's just the subjective interpretation that fits that belief Like people thinking positiveness helps cancer, I mean, depressed people probably have lower survival rates, so a positive person might have better results, sure, but that's a far too simplistic interpretation It's not even wrong, just not at all like any of it works, even when it appears to explain the phenomena too But ultimately reality is far more complex and chaotic than even science could ever explain, although it'll always be infinitely better than mysticism. I don't think studying empirical experiences like these is useless, but one has to be aware of their Brain's biases and yet be sure that there'll always be a bias to it that you can't take off I mean, i get why people interpret psychedelic experiences mystically, it is subjectively magical for certain, but choosing to believe that interpretation instead of pursuing a deeper, more complex truth behind it, is well, delusional.. Don't believe anything at first, find out why would your brain try to put it like that and what's the true information behind it. Ego death can be interpreted both "I'm Jesus reincarnated" or "We are a way for the cosmos to know itself", it does make you understand why people would interpret it like that, but there's not just one interpretation, there are infinitely many, we have to reason which are the most coherent and plausible _Feeling_ like you can read people's minds is ok, brains can create that feeling. Thinking you really do have a direct access to someone's thoughts is delusional tho

@@Ewr42 You're probably right - body language alone can do that. But so much of consciousness is unexplored...funny, one of the most profound experiences I ever had was a spontaneous OBE back in '81 or so...just suddenly left my body. I was meditating a lot and working very hard... whatever caused it, it was sudden and total - i was simpy a consciousness floating in white light...in the distance were color designs that I knew were beings of light. When I popped back out it took a couple days to really be back in my body. Strangest thing, no psychedelics involved. Started to happen one other time a few years later, but since then nothing like it.
Cannot believe I missed this. Binge watch! I remember meeting Dennis when he stayed with Michael Bock in Melbourne.
I did my graduate training in a lab that focused on plant and fungal natural products, mainly looking for compounds with activity against various cancers. Our chemistry collaborator worked a lot with endophytes, often using epigenetic modifiers to modulate the secondary metabolites produced. I would have to agree that endophytes are a huge untapped resource for drug discovery.

A great interview . I'm trying to wrap my head around how people who have " tripped " a lot - Dr. McKenna , Hamilton , Stan Grof - -are nonetheless cogent , insightful , carefully measure their words , and are able to see things from multiple perspectives . Meanwhile the average Joe ( or Donald ) who has never experienced anything of the sort, can't see past his or her own nose , can talk their head off and make absolutely no sense . There must be so so much to this and so much yet to be learned .

Terrence reminds me of socretes and the other famous greek speakers, i find the culture him and his brother spawned to have new heads of it and hamilton is ours today
Thank you 🙌
Absolutely fascinating work! I would love to get involved in research.
I love Dennis so much ❤️
hamilton ur such a real one FR keep rocking
This is incredible
Love u Hamilton . You’re my spirit animal lol. 👏🏾✌️🤘
Psychedelics are great, one time I was trippin on too much acid and I was staring at a fire pit and the fire pit turned into a mini world with little people and buildings, it was 2 years ago and it's such an experience to remember. would love to try out the magic mushrooms next, just don't know where to get them, so hard to come by

Love Dennis a legend. I would have loved his job..oh man his scope on all of the plant medicines, and semi-symthetic, and synthetic.
This flew by. Id love more content from you with the Dr..
There was a Life magazine article written by Robert Gordon Wasson in 1957, “Seeking the Magic Mushroom,” I think that was a bit before the McKennas.
this was such an amazing conversation...i mean...i knew it would be🙂

My two favorite people in this world
Great video!
this is going to be a banger if you will.
"...adjunct pofesssors are scum. They're lower than the janitors on the scale ..." Mr. McKenna's words sting because they are SO true!
I met Hamilton's doppelganger one evening in Upstate New York a few years ago. I hadn't seen Hamilton's Pharmacopeia at the time so I didn't know who Hamilton Morris was. But I met this guy camped out at a tiny lake. He was traveling around as he worked from a laptop. He had just came from Ontario down into the Adirondacks in New York. We chatted and drank a beer then parted ways. He was a very friendly and mellow guy. A couple weeks later I started watching Hamilton's Pharmacopeia and was like "Holy shit, I met that guy!" Most likely it was just someone who looked and sounded similar and my brain made an incorrect connection. Even so, I will occasionally tell people I met Hamilton Morris in a chance encounter deep in the Adirondacks. Nobody believes it anyway.

Maybe he was on a shroom bender
This is great. I don't really do psychedelics or even weed at all but I find it all fascinating.
