    I need to start a foxhunt with my local club. Looks like a bunch of fun. It's also something that can be done in this time.

    Absolutely. It is one of the most fun things that can be done in the hobby. It's great because you can use ham radio to actually physically do something. A great illustration of how ham radio is great for more than just talking.

    That was great fun. Thanks for the ride-a-long! If I were closer I would love to participate one day.

    I've been aware of the sport for a while now, but this is the first time I've seen it done. Very cool! Looks like a blast!

    Our club has done two fox hunts in the last year, but I have not been able to participate in those. Hoping to for the next one. Love the idea of the 3rd harmonic trick. Thank you! (Liked and subbed)

    Ironically I won a FT65 fox hunting at Vincennes. Good for you guys for being active. I beat the Doppler guy 😀

    Awesome! I like the FT-65, I bought specifically for foxhunting, but it's now my favorite HT for general use as well. Come foxhunt with us sometime, always the 3rd Saturday of each month. Info can be found under the club events menu at w9qyq.org, or just comment here if you need more info! :) - Tim KB9SNL

    I noticed the guy with the map failed to factor in the difference between true north and magnetic north while charting his route. That's the deviation that he found and had to adjust.

    Great work, guys. Thanks for filming it. So the guy with the Doppler got there first and by the shortest route. It would be good to have a camera guy with him in future to watch it working. I wish local clubs were more interested in this great sport, but it seems that long term members all talk about how they did that back in the 70's or 80's and are no longer really interested in it. Add that to the fact that not enough younger people are getting into ham radio lately and it's a tough job raising interest in fox hunting these days.

    Wow! That was nothing like how I thought it would be. I thought you would get intersecting lines that would give you an area but no. That was a true hunt. Well done. Sorry you didn't win.

    Thanks! Yeah, I often hunt with a 2 or 4 element quad antenna on the car as well, which seems to give me far less broad readings than I kept getting on this hunt. However, the antenna used in this video has done better as well...2 meters is interesting, due to how signals reflect off of all sorts of things! A few months prior every reading I took with the antenna was nearly spot-on and I won that hunt. Every hunt is different, which is part of the fun! Thanks so much for watching! - Tim KB9SNL

    A note about the comment about "CAMERA GUYS DON"T RUN" It all depends on how big an explosion that you're filming is going to end up, or How Big is that Grizzly Bear that just came out from the bushes, or How come you're on a bombing /strafing range when a A10 Warthog goes thru a strafe run. You might want to check the boxers/briefs just in case.

    Remember next time keep the compass away from metalic objects.

  • @kirkgroeneveld3191
    @kirkgroeneveld31913 жыл бұрын

    I am concerned that you lay the magnetic compass on the trunk hood of your car. As a result, the magnet will be deflected by the metal in the hood. Did you account for that?

  • @3oldtechdudes

    @3oldtechdudes

    3 жыл бұрын

    I was only using the compass when on the hood in order to determine the direction of the line I intended to draw relative to the map (so, not using the arrow on the compass in that situation.) I'd already determined the reading relative to north well away from the car. Otherwise, yes, it for sure would have been incorrect.

    @@3oldtechdudes I was going to comment on that, but on second look I realized that you were only using the baseplate compass as a protractor on the map.
